Horse with No Name” Paul Zollo - the Origins of the Iconic, Enigmatic Anthem, in His Own Words It’S One of the Most Famously Mysterious Songs Ever to Become a Hit
APRIL 3, 2020 Link to article: https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-song-horse-with-no-name/ Behind The Song: America, “Horse With No Name” Paul Zollo - The Origins of the Iconic, Enigmatic Anthem, In His Own Words It’s one of the most famously mysterious songs ever to become a hit. It’s got enigma baked into it, which may be part of its lasting magic. Like Lennon’s “Norwegian Wood,” and other great though cryptic songs, it doesn’t fill in the entire picture, leaving it instead up to the listener to do that on their own. All of its components enhance this dynamic of hypnotic mystery. There’s the swampy/mystic tone of the track, ethereal yet visceral, just acoustic guitars, bass and conga with no drums. The vocal is delivered as if from a storyteller spinning an ancient mythic tale, not performing as much as testifying, and in language that resounds like coded poetry. We’re in motion the entire time, days are passing, and the heat is relentless. Elemental symbols are everywhere like images from a perplexingly real dream – a dry riverbed, appointed with plants and birds and rocks and things, and incessant sound. And, of course, there’s that mysterious horse, the one with no name, which did forever force the question: Why? Why didn’t anyone name this horse? In search of answers, we turned to the songwriting source himself, Dewey Bunnell, who spoke to us on the phone last week, the final week of March, 2020, at the start of the mandatory stay-at-home orders in California. -
The Roots Report: America at Twin River
The Roots Report: America at Twin River Okee dokee folks… “Fifty years was not in the plan, but as long as you keep coming we’ll keep playing,” exclaimed Dewey Bunnell of the band America last Friday night at Twin River Casino’s Event Center. America was started as a trio in England by the sons of American Air Force servicemen stationed in England — Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek — in the late ’60s while they were still teenagers in high school. They quickly gained notoriety and soon were one of the bands that defined the sound of the early 1970s. Peek left the band in 1977 and passed away in 2011. America has been Bunnell and Beckley for most of their 50-year history. A few songs into their 90-minute set, Gerry Beckly said, “We’re glad to be back in Rhode Island…we’re sorry it’s been a while since we’ve been here!” The show kicked off with one of their more popular hits, “Tin Man.” That was quickly followed by their 1982 hit, “You Can Do Magic.” The vocals were handed over to drummer Ryland Steen for “Don’t Cross The River.” Multi instrumentalist Steve Fekete added six-string banjo to the mix as well. He also showcased his talents on piano and acoustic guitar, but really demonstrated his playing prowess on electric guitar. Most of the concert consisted of the entire contents of History: America’s Greatest Hits with the exception of “Muskrat Love.” They played other selections from their early albums such as “Riverside” and “Here,” in addition to later album cuts like “The Border” and their #1 hit in Italy, “Survival” about which they commented, “Not so big here!” They mentioned that “Every year we like to dredge up a song from an obscure album to play at a show” and that song this time around was “Greenhouse” from the Hourglass album. -

American Songwriter – Behind the Song: “Sister Golden Hair”
March 26, 2020 Link to article: https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-song-sister-golden-hair/ Behind the Song: “Sister Golden Hair” by America Paul Zollo March 26, 2020 America’s Gerry Beckley on the origins of this classic song, and on making the record with the legendary Beatles team of George Martin and Geoff Emerick Because of the Coronavirus and social restrictions here in L.A. and elsewhere at this moment, all new interviews we’re conducting for American Songwriter are being done over the phone. We spoke to Gerry Beckley, who along with Dewey Bunell, separately wrote songs for their band America. Dewey wrote their first #1 hit, the cryptic classic “Horse With No Name” (the origins of which Dewey discusses with us in an upcoming piece). And Gerry wrote their second #1 hit, “Sister Golden Hair,” the main subject of our conversation on this day. Gerry spoke to us from his home in Venice – the California one – near the beach, on the dark morning of March 25, 2020. It was dark both physically and emotionally, because of this crisis, which has been exponentially expanding in many directions every day. The awful news had just come in the night before that Jackson Browne (an old friend of Gerry’s and one who figures into this story), had tested positive for the virus. What was already terrible and frightening had gotten worse, and now was way too close to home. So before getting to a discussion of the song and other musical topics, we spoke about Jackson, and also about how Gerry and his family had been coping with the crisis. -

Behind the Song: “Ventura Highway” by Dewey Bunnell Paul Zollo June 6, 2020
JUNE 6, 2020 Link to article: https://americansongwriter.com/ventura-highway-by-america-behind-the- song/ Behind the Song: “Ventura Highway” by Dewey Bunnell Paul Zollo June 6, 2020 In his own words, from a recent interview during lockdown time “Ventura Highway” was written by Dewey Bunnell of America in 1972, from their second album, Homecoming, which they produced themselves. A classic California anthem, it’s one of the great L.A. songs. How many of us thought of it the very first time we started driving on the 101 and realized it was called Ventura? Ventura. As Dewey explains herein, it was the word itself that triggered the song. Its evocation of adventure matched how he felt as a kid in Omaha told the family was moving to California. California! To kids from the Midwest, especially during those long frozen winters, the idea of going to sunny California seemed as exotic and unlikely as going to Tahiti. He saw it all on a sign by the sea when he first arrived with that word on it. Ventura. It’s also been the subject of some confusion, as people assume it is about the Ventura Freeway, also known as the 101. Which isn’t exactly right. But pretty close. “Now, we’re really getting deep into this,” he said with a slight laugh, in regard to the endless barrage of questions about this and other enigmatic facets of this song. But he’s the guy, after all, who wrote “Horse With No Name,” after all (discussed here), and also “Tin Man.” So he’s one of the kings of enigmatic songs, the kind which people have been obsessing over forever – especially those who might have listened back in the day while enjoying some of “God’s herb,” (to quote our friend Henry Diltz). -

American Songwriter (8/28)
AMERICAN SONGWRITER (8/28) https://americansongwriter.com/america-celebrates-50th-birthday-with-new-song/ America Celebrates Their 50th Birthday with a Brand-New Classic Song, “Remembering” Paul Zollo August 28, 2020 It’s included on Half-Century, a new box set being released today. “Remembering,” the new song by America A lot happened in 1970, and much of it wasn’t great. The Beatles broke up, the U.S. invaded Cambodia, half a million people in Bangladesh were killed by a cyclone, and Richard Nixon was president. But some great things happened that year too. One of them was called America, an iconic band which was born that year by three guys who could write great songs and sing them in perfect harmony. All were sons of Airmen in the US Airforce, stationed in England. It’s there this band formed and made their first album fifty years ago. Formed by Dan Peek, Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley, they’ve been a beloved part of American culture ever since. With hits both romantic and enigmatic, from “I Need You” to “Horse with No Name” to “Ventura Highway” and beyond, their songs continue to resound through our lives. To commemorate this 50th birthday milestone, they are releasing a new boxed set today, Half-Century. It’s got a bounty of treasures for America fans: rare archival studio recordings, alternate mixes, demos and rehearsals, previously unreleased tracks, two discs of radio interviews, and a DVD of Super 8 “home movies.” There’s also the wonderful “Remembering,” a brand new classic America song by Gerry Beckley.
