Job Title: Horticulturist Reports to: Buffalo Bayou Park Director Status” Full-time, Exempt Buffalo Bayou Partnership Founded in 1986, Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) is the non-profit organization revitalizing and transforming Buffalo Bayou, Houston’s most significant natural resource. BBP protects land for future parks and trails, coordinates other natural and built bayou enhancements, and sponsors wide ranging events, boating activities and public art installations to attract Houstonians and visitors to the bayou’s shores. Horticulturist Position Summary The Buffalo Bayou Partnership Horticulturist will work in the following high-profile bayou areas: Buffalo Bayou Park, a 2.3-mile, 160-acre park just west of downtown Houston; and Sabine Promenade, Sesquicentennial Park and Allen’s Landing in downtown. These green spaces contain various landscape typologies such as lawns, woodlands, prairies and perennial gardens. The Horticulturist will work primarily in the perennial garden areas, as well as high-profile areas at Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive intersections. It will be the Horticulturist’s responsibility to maintain the design integrity of these sites. Horticulturist Duties Performs the following general garden maintenance duties: Tills and grades soil and adds amendments in preparation for seasonal planting Transplants trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Applies fertilizers and pesticides to trees, shrubs, herbaceous and woody ornamental plants. Makes repairs to gravel pathways and other areas. Monitors and assists staff with irrigation system. Rakes and disposes of leaves and trash Maintains plant records to implement the design intent of the park. Assists in supervising volunteers assigned to planting areas. Safely operators various manual and power tools and equipment. Drives various vehicles and motorized equipment. Performs related landscaping work as assigned. Required Education, Skill and Experience High school diploma or G.E.D. Associates degree in Horticulture or closely-related field highly preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in the horticultural field. Knowledge of general horticultural principles, landscape management techniques, plant identification, and basic garden design concepts. Ability to operate manual and motorized equipment. Proven track record of working with others in a respectful and consistent manner. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Basic computer skills needed for record keeping. Valid Texas driver’s license Must obtain a Non-Commercial Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf categories within six months of hire. Continued employment may be contingent on obtaining and maintaining required licenses. Physical Demands/Working Conditions Excellent physical condition and agility to perform strenuous tasks in varying weather conditions typical of Houston. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to work flexible hours as needed. Regular hours are: 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday). Saturdays as needed to work with volunteers Compensation This is a full-time exempt position with a competitive salary commensurate with experience. BBP also offers an excellent benefits package.
