Although he left the navy, the experience of those nights at sea may well have been the starting point for the voyages he was to make in his painting over a lifetime, at first into a fabricated symbolic realm, and even- tually into the expanding spaces he created on his canvases. The trajectory of Gordon Onslow Ford’s voyages began at his birth- place in Wendover, England and led to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and to three years at sea as a junior officer in the Mediterranean and Atlantic fleets of the British Navy. He resigned from the navy in order to study art in Paris, where he became the youngest member of the pre-war Surrealist group. At the start of World War II, he returned to England for active duty. While in London awaiting a naval assignment, he organized a Surrealist exhibition and oversaw the publication of Surrealist poetry and artworks that had been produced the previous summer in France (fig.

Derek Sayer ANDRÉ BRETON AND THE MAGIC CAPITAL: AN AGONY IN SIX FITS 1 After decades in which the Czechoslovak Surrealist Group all but vanished from the art-historical record on both sides of the erstwhile Iron Curtain, interwar Prague’s standing as the “second city of surrealism” is in serious danger of becoming a truth universally acknowledged.1 Vítězslav Nezval denied that “Zvěrokruh” (Zodiac), which appeared at the end of 1930, was a surrealist magazine, but its contents, which included his translation of André Breton’s “Second Manifesto of Surrealism” (1929), suggested otherwise.2 Two years later the painters Jindřich Štyrský and Toyen (Marie Čermínová), the sculptor Vincenc Makovský, and several other Czech artists showed their work alongside Hans/Jean Arp, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio De Chirico, Max Ernst, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Wolfgang Paalen, and Yves Tanguy (not to men- tion a selection of anonymous “Negro sculptures”) in the “Poesie 1932” exhibition at the Mánes Gallery.3 Three times the size of “Newer Super-Realism” at the Wads- worth Atheneum the previous November – the first surrealist exhibition on Ameri- 1 Not one Czech artist was included, for example, in MoMA’s blockbuster 1968 exhibition “Dada, Surrealism, and Their Heritage” or discussed in William S. © Lizzie Thynne, 2010 Indirect Action: Politics and the Subversion of Identity in Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore’s Resistance to the Occupation of Jersey Lizzie Thynne Abstract This article explores how Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore translated the strategies of their artistic practice and pre-war involvement with the Surrealists and revolutionary politics into an ingenious counter-propaganda campaign against the German Occupation. Unlike some of their contemporaries such as Tristan Tzara and Louis Aragon who embraced Communist orthodoxy, the women refused to relinquish the radical relativism of their approach to gender, meaning and identity in resisting totalitarianism. Their campaign built on Cahun’s theorization of the concept of ‘indirect action’ in her 1934 essay, Place your Bets (Les paris sont ouvert), which defended surrealism in opposition to both the instrumentalization of art and myths of transcendence. An examination of Cahun’s post-war letters and the extant leaflets the women distributed in Jersey reveal how they appropriated and inverted Nazi discourse to promote defeatism through carnivalesque montage, black humour and the ludic voice of their adopted persona, the ‘Soldier without a Name.’ It is far from my intention to reproach those who left France at the time of the Occupation. But one must point out that Surrealism was entirely absent from the preoccupations of those who remained because it was no help whatsoever on an emotional or practical level in their struggles against the Nazis.1 Former dadaist and surrealist and close collaborator of André Breton, Tristan Tzara thus dismisses the idea that surrealism had any value in opposing Nazi domination.

What doesfdid she want? Why is she so hard to ñnd, so rarely mentioned by the critics, ancient or modem? After reminding us that: ‘Platon n’accorde pas droit de cité au pokte,” Blaise Cendrars, in a 1914 poem about the poet’s position in life, leaves ‘woman’llafemme’ suspended in mid-text, traversed by a long reference to the Nietzschean dauce: La femme, la danse que Nietzsche a voulu nous apprendre à danser La femme Mais l’ironie? Today Cendrars’ daughg image evokes the uncertah, neglected position of the woman poet. Sara Miiis appropriately titied a recent article on Gertrude Stein ‘No Poetry for Ladies“ a phrase taken fiom James Joyce (but, irony?) applied to ‘this poeiry for (and by) ladies and perhaps unfit for ladies’ (Mills, p.87). Wolfgang Paalen Implicit Spaces May 17 – July 12, 2007 “The main concern is not to operate for eternity, but in eternity.” from Wolfgang Paalen´s scrapbook Voyage nord-ouest, Canada/Alaska 1939 Cover Image Wolfgang Paalen, Ciel de pieuvre (Octopus sky) Fumage and oil on canvas 1938 97 x 130 cm (38 1/4 x 51 1/4 in.) More than half a century ago Wolfgang Paalen in the Bay Area Paalen worked and exhibited for some years together with his wife, Luchita, and their friends Gordon Onslow Ford, Jacqueline Johnson and Lee Mullican in Mill Valley. It was here in 1949 that he published his essay with the strange title Dynaton, in which he contemplated space and time, our changing image of the cosmos caused by the new physics, and what it meant for an artist to draw from a universe of the imaginable and no longer merely from the three known dimensions of the visible world. Jacqueline Johnson later wrote, “Paalen´s voice held the flashing presence of mystery where, as in childhood, it is central to all the threads of reality, of an identity to come, the clue of the concealed.” In this way, Dynaton was formed as a small artists’ group. Onslow Ford consequently called him “the man of many possibilities.” For Lee he embodied, “the advent of the Lord of Prismatic Situations.” Jacqueline adored him as a, “man with a spark of nuclear presence.” And Luchita, his wife, called him “the most intriguing spirit possible, but the most impossible man to live with.” Each friend acknowledged his visionary genius.

  • Paalen in Exile in Mexico
Seite 1 Reihe: Wolfgang Paalen Autor: Christian Kloyber Datum: 2019 Paalen in Exile in Mexico Christian Kloyber May 1942 marked the publication of the first issue of DYN, the art and culture magazine founded by Wolfgang Paalen. This coincided, not unintentionally, with Mexico’s entry into the Second World War; as a leitmotif, Paalen contributed the following remarks to its preface: “All totalitarian tyrannies banished modern art. They are right. For as a vital stimulus to imagination, modern art is an invaluable weapon in the struggle for freedom.”i After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (on December 6 and 7, 1941) and the USA’s declaration of war on Japan, Germany, and Italy, Mexico abandoned its neutrality and entered the conflict in May 1942. From 1939, the year of his arrival in Mexico, Wolfgang Paalen’s view of the world had changed. The external political circumstances of the war were not the only factor to contribute to this. His personal relationships and the understanding previously shared with his Surrealist fellow travelers appeared to break down, or rather, were broken by Paalen himself. He wrote: “In the darkest hour of the night, prudent friends counsel, if not howling with the wolves, contorting the face into a grimace, as if preparing to do so. The moment has not yet come, they say. On the contrary! This special moment has arrived, but not for howling with the wolves; now is the time for doing what is right and necessary.”ii With that, Paalen consciously withdrew and, from his exile in Mexico, he searched for new contacts.

Gallery Wendi Norris presents Leonora Carrington: The Celtic Surrealist, a traveling subset of works from the critically acclaimed 2013 exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin. In the gallery’s second solo show for Carrington (English, 1917-2011), and the first since Carrington’s death in 2011, The Celtic Surrealist comprises paintings, gouaches, and rarely exhibited tapestries from 1948- 1974.Carrington’s otherworldly narrative paintings comprised of hybrid creatures, twisted mythological narratives, and politically charged and humorous fairytales are further understood by revisiting her Irish ancestry as well as referencing the epic tales told to her by her Irish grandmother and mother. Carrington’s upper-class English upbringing mixed with her inherent unorthodox and mischievous nature fueled the visual vocabulary of much of her work. Her singular vision may be even better explained through the multicultural references inherent in the work. Themes such as metamorphosis and transformation prevail throughout the artworks in the exhibition. For example, a seven-piece gouache series, exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s seminal exhibition, Two Private Eyes (1999), depicts humans transforming into fish, scorpions, and assorted mythological gods and creatures. Sanctuary for Furies, a substantial painting from a later period, portrays a periodic table of sorts that revisits many of the iconic figures from her lexicon.
