    Gender Studies Department of Thematic Studies Linköping University “House and Techno Broke Them Barriers Down”: Exploring Exclusion through Diversity in Berlin’s Electronic Dance Music Nightclubs Naomi Alice Rodgers Supervisor name: Silje Lundgren Gender Studies, LiU Master’s Programme Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change Master’s thesis 30 ECTS credits ISRN: LIU-TEMA G/GSIC2-A—15/003—SE 1 ABSTRACT Berlin is heralded worldwide as being a city that is open, innovative and diverse: a true multicultural metropolis. Music plays a central role in the city’s claim to this title. Go to any one of Berlin’s many notorious alternative nightclubs and you will hear techno, house and electronic dance music blasting out to hoards of enthusiastic partygoers. Many of these clubs and their participants claim that these parties represent diversity, acceptance, equality and tolerance: Spaces within which social divisions are suspended, difference is overcome and people are united. This ubiquitous discursive assertion is referred to in this thesis as a “diversity discourse”. This “diversity discourse” will be deconstructed and situated within a wider political context, with a specific focus on perceptions of race, ethnicity, sexuality and gender. Engaging with theories of intersectionality, post-colonial theory (looking specifically at Jasbir Puar’s important work on homonationalism) and employing qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews and autoethnographic inquiry, it will be argued that the “diversity discourse” works as a mask to conceal a reality of social segregation. Far from being sites of equality and diversity, it will be suggested that access to these nightclubs is premised on the possession of societal privilege.

Study 1: Participants and Sampling Based on population statistics from Eurostat (2016), a German commercial online provider and its subsidiaries in UK and Spain realised 'crossed' target quotas for generation (gen Y: 18-34, gen X: 35-51, gen B: 52-68), education level (ISCED 0- 2, ISCED 3-4, ISCED 5-8) and gender (female/male), arriving at an overall gross sample of 10,180 subjects with approximate equal participants from each of the three countries. Due to internal logics of the project producing the data, survey experiments were conducted in two waves, December 2016 (n = 3,485) and May 2017 (n = 6,659). A1.2. Study 1: Stimulus Material Employed musical excerpts stem from a pool of 549 popular music tracks that had been selected from the digital music library of the collaborating audio branding agency HearDis (see Acknowledgements). Frequencies of selected tracks across genres were deliberately unbalanced, in order to represent typical frequencies of genres in a music library of the audio branding industry (see Figure 4). The 30s excerpts were cut from the original recordings (if possible) to always contain the end of first verse and the beginning of first chorus. Subsequently, resulting audio files were technically and perceptually normalised in terms of loudness. Randomised excerpt selection and playback for individual participants was programmed so that each track had the same selection probability within each combinatory cell of sociodemographic variables and country of residence.     Audio Based Genre Classification of Electronic Music Priit Kirss Master's Thesis Music, Mind and Technology University of Jyväskylä June 2007 JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO Faculty of Humanities Department of Music Priit Kirss Audio Based Genre Classification of Electronic Music Music, Mind and Technology Master’s Thesis June 2007 Number of pages: 72 This thesis aims at developing the audio based genre classification techniques combining some of the existing computational methods with models that are capable of detecting rhythm patterns. The overviews of the features and machine learning algorithms used for current approach are presented. The total 250 musical excerpts from five different electronic music genres such as deep house, techno, uplifting trance, drum and bass and ambient were used for evaluation. The methodology consists of two main steps, first, the feature data is extracted from audio excerpts, and second, the feature data is used to train the machine learning algorithms for classification. The experiments carried out using feature set composed of Rhythm Patterns, Statistical Spectrum Descriptors from RPextract and features from Marsyas gave the highest results. Training that feature set on Support Vector Machine algorithm the classification accuracy of 96.4% was reached. Alspach 1 Gage X. Alspach Lanier Sammons MPA 475 November 2020 Electronic Music Subgenres for Music Providers Genre labels are tricky. When I uploaded an electronic song of mine called “Ankh” to a music distributor, I was met with several electronic subgenre options. I would consider this song to be trap, however given my options, I labelled it as dubstep first and electronica second. When “Ankh” was released, it was labelled dubstep on Apple Music1 but it was labelled ​ dance/electronic at Napster.2 Because of these options I was given, I wanted to learn more about ​ ​ the genres that I could pick from in order to more accurately identify my music on these platforms. Genre organizes the production and consumption of cultural material, including organizational procedures (Lena 3). What this means is if someone likes a song, they can find more songs like it based on its genre.
