"I learnt to fly at the National. The National Theatre Ballet Schoof taught me how to perform, how to be an artist and a dancer. How to transcend the everyday, into the mysterious world of the stage. Without it I would never have known the joys which have become my life as a professional dancer." Amber Scott, Principal Dancer, The National Theatre Ballet School is one of Australia's most influential dance training institutions. As the birth-place for dance training in this country, its alumni and faculty - such as Marilyn Jones, Amber Scott, Jarryd Madden to name a few - have extended its legacy across this vast continent and around the world, creating new families of dance organisations and communities.

I'm inspired by the grit and determination of the visionary founder of our school: soprano Gertrude Johnson. She returned to Australia having retired from her successful singing career in London. Distressed by the lack of training opportunities in Australia for young, upcoming artists, Miss Gertrude decided to start one of her own.

The National Theatre Ballet School was formed in 7939; it was the first of its kind in Australia to be attached to its own professional theatre company which would recruit students from the school into the company. For over 80 years the National Theatre Ballet School has continued as a training facility in our own beautiful theatre in Melbourne where more than 16,000 young artists have developed their skills and explored their passion for dance.

As its current Artistic Director, it's my pleasure to lead this historical dance institution into the future, acknowledge its past and inspire its present student body. We proudly continue to produce, connect and embrace the entire performing arts family of Australia and continue to produce great results in preparing the next generation - with similar grit and determination to our founder - for a future in the dance industry.

The Ballet school awards scholarships each year, selected by the Director of Ballet, for students that show great promise or outstanding achievement. For more information, please visit our website.

THE JEAN STEWART SCHOLARSHIP This Scholarship is named in honour of Jean Stewart (1921-2017) who was an esteemed dance photographer and a regular patron of the National Theatre Ballet School for many years. She was trained as a radiographer, but ballet was her passion and she created an amazing archive of photographs of Australian companies in the 1940s and 1950s. Her work is currently represented in various libraries and performing arts collections around Australia. They are awarded to students who, in the opinion of the Director and Staff, have demonstrated their professional potential and can show that financial assistance would significantly benefit them. The funds are to be used primarily for the payment of tuition fees. The amount awarded is at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

THE EILEEN TASKER SCHOLARSHIP This Scholarship, named in honour of the Eileen Tasker OAM, the National Theatre Ballet School's longest serving teacher. She has taught thousands of students since 1975 and is still imparting her knowledge, expertise and love of ballet to many more young dancers. The scholarship is awarded to a student who, in the opinion of the Director and Staff, has demonstrated their professional potential and can show that financial assistance would significantly benefit them. The funds are to be used primarily for the payment of tuition fees. The amount awarded is at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

THE GERTRUDE JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP This Scholarship, named in honour of the National Theatre’s creator is valued at $1000. THE ARRELLAH INDIGENOUS SCHOLARSHIP Looking to the future, in 2021 the National Theatre Ballet School is excited to announce Arrellah the Ballet School’s inaugural scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Arrellah is an Aboriginal word meaning “Dancing Ground” and the scholarship was conceived by the National Theatre Ballet School’s Artistic Director Damian Smith. As a proud Wonnarua man of the Upper Hunter Valley, Damian received support in the early stages of his training from several generous individuals and scholarships. He is thrilled to offer this opportunity for full-time dance training and encourage two Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who show talent and passion for dance. The Arrellah scholarships will cover the full-time training for two Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students throughout 2021. We encourage men and women aged 16yrs+

To apply for the Arrellah Scholarship via expression of interest. Each student can be nominated by their dance school Director or teacher with supporting and introduction letter addressed to the Artistic Director, Mr. Damian Smith via [email protected] National Theatre Ballet School UNIFORM

CHANGE OF ADDRESS Upon arriving in Australia, you are required to advise the National Theatre Ballet School of your residential address and telephone number and of any subse quent changes to your residential address.

It is extremely important that students notify The National Theatre of a change of address as, under Section 20 of the ESOS Act, The National Theatre is obliged to serve a notice at your last known address if you breach a student visa condition relating to attendance or academic performance. The National Theatre may also send warning notices to you which are aimed at helping prevent breaches of your visa conditions.

As per Tu ition Protection Service (TPS) update, international students are required to update their current address at least every six months. It is your re sponsibility and in your own interests to provide details at The National Theatre to ensure you receive important information about your course, fees and pos sible breaches of your student visa.

PERSONAL LIVING EXPENSES It's important that all students are aware they must be able to cover their living costs as well as their tuition fees and any other expenses whilst in Australia. The Migration Regulations require international students to show evidence of funds to contribute to the cost of living and studying in Australia.

Whilst students are allowed to undertake part-time work to subsidise their living expenses this must not rely on work to meet all their expenses.

The Department of Home Affairs has financial requirements you must meet in order to receive a student visa for Australia. Refer to the step by step Student Visa Subclass 500 application and Document Checklist Tool for details on how to provide the evidence required to cover the costs of your stay, including your travel, study and living expenses. As of October 2019, the 12-month living costs are: • For students or guardians - AU 0$21,041 • For partners coming with you - AUD$7,362 • For a child coming with you - AUD$3,152

It is compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 18 to attend school and pay school tuition fees. If you have children that would be also coming to Australia, childcare costs also need to be considered. For further information, please refer to the Department of Home Affairs Immigration website.

TAX FILE NUMBER If you wish to work whilst studying in Australia, you will need to have a tax file number (TFN). This ensures that the correct amount of tax is deducted from your earnings. It also allows you to claim a refund at the end of the financial year (30 June). Most students who work part time are eligible for a refund. For more details and to apply for a TFN visit the ATO website.

UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI) All students (including International) undertaking vocational education and training must hold a USI and provide it to the National Theatre Melbourne during the enrolment process. For more information about the USI visit www.usi.gov.au or speak to the School Administrator.
