She has completed two tertiary degrees - Murphy and she toured Australia as an original ensemble Bachelor of Arts (Media & Communications) and a cast member of "Wicked", also covering the role of Bachelor of Dance/Bachelor of Education, both from Nessarose. Ellen grew up in New Zealand and started ballet UNSW and with Distinction. Since graduating, Shelley has lessons when she was 5 years old. She has attained her featured in television commercials for Samsung, KFC, ARAD letters for completing her advanced 2 work in Bonds and AMP, performed at numerous high profile classical ballet, her NZAMD solo seal diploma in modern events such as the ARIA Awards Nights and with jazz and was awarded the NZAMD National Jazz Dancing Melbourne-based contemporary dance company, Chunky Title and has since received various scholarships in all Move. Shelley enjoys a wide variety of choreographic and styles of dance. Thomas’ later training was at the VCA Secondary School (2008) on a full scholarship, and the NZ School of Dance (2009-2011). While at VCASS he performed with the Melbourne Ballet Company, Altona City Theatre production of CATS (7 month period) and placed third at the Australian Choreographic Competition. In 2010 Thomas took his solo Manipulated Living to Tempo, New Zealand Festival of Dance where he was nominated for ‘Best Choreography by an Emerging Artist’, ‘Most Inspiring Performance’ and won ‘Best Performance by an Emerging Male Artist’. Thomas also featured as a soloist in the 2010 NZSD Graduation Season performing an excerpt of Michael Parmenter’s Rhapsodysolo. Thomas returned to Tempo in 2011 with a new solo Seam, and an excerpt of his piece Shepherd, from NZSD Choreographic Season. In his final year at the NZSD, Thomas spent a short period with Australian Dance Theatre (Adelaide) performing excerpts of Be Your Self.

David, immediate past Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet and a Vice-President of the RAD, was bestowed with this award in recognition of his contribution to The Australian Ballet as a dancer and director, as well as being a vital supporter and advocate for dance. The QEII Coronation Award, the Academy’s most prestigious accolade, was instituted in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The first recipient in 1954 was Dame Ninette de Valois. Since then it has been awarded to many of the greatest names in dance, in recognition of outstanding services to the art form. Former recipients include Dame Marie Rambert DBE, Sir Frederick Ashton, Rudolf Nureyev and Carlos Acosta CBE. It was most recently awarded to Karen Kain in 2019. The award was presented to David at a special lunch gala organised by the Friends of The Australian Ballet in Sydney.

Set to Puccini’s memorable score, in an arrangement by John Lanchbery, Madame Butterfly chronicles the love story of the beautiful geisha Cio-Cio San who is betrothed to marry the handsome American, Lieutenant Pinkerton. The production unfolds dramatically on Peter Farmer’s picturesque sets, which beautifully evoke the mystery and languor of 19th century Japan. Opening the program is the company premiere of Mr. Welch’s Son of Chamber Symphony, set to music by John Adams. Houston Ballet will give seven performances of Madame Butterfly with Son of Chamber Symphony at Wortham Theater Center in downtown Houston. Created in 1993, William Forsythe’s Quintett is one of the most renowned contemporary dance works of the 20th Century. This highly poetic and powerful work, developed in collaboration with Ballet Frankfurt dancers Dana Caspersen, Stephen Galloway, Jacopo Godani, Thomas McManus and Jone San Martin, was a final love letter to Forsythe’s wife, dancer Tracy-Kai Maier, who succumbed to cancer in 1994, aged 32. Quintett is set to a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack by renowned post-minimalist British composer, Gavin Bryars; his iconic 1975 composition, Jesus's Blood Never Failed Me Yet. Inspired by a grainy, chance recording of a homeless man singing, the looped vocals begin as a barely audible, distant melody, and acquire a slowly evolving, growing orchestral accompaniment, which with its insistent optimism, tinged with tragedy, creeps under the skin and magnifies the intense poignancy of the choreography.
