From the Director You’re about to experience something ground- breaking in our beautiful city of Louisville. This is a collaboration like no other. Louisville Ballet, Kentucky Opera, and the Louisville Orchestra together for the first time in decades, working with a creative team from all over the world. They are going to take you on a journey, you will explore the struggle between good and evil, you will face your own mortality, and you will contemplate a peaceful release from life on this earth. In The Beyond we showcase the extraordinary talents of each of group of artists as they tell these haunting, yet strangely beautiful, stories in a way that only performing artists can. We are so fortunate to live in a community that treasures its arts organizations in the way that Louisville does. This vibrant culture makes me extremely proud and it’s what makes productions like these possible. I am so grateful for everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring you these extraordinary works. As we continue to grow and enrich our arts community, know that you can look forward to many more collaborations like the one you are about to see. Enjoy the surreal world of The Beyond. Robert danced the Sanctus pas de deux and his exemplary partnering skills were instrumental in its creation. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to stage the work for Louisville Ballet as part of The Beyond. The inspiration for the ballet is drawn solely from the sublime music of Fauré rather than any interpretation of the Latin text used in the Requiem Mass. Unlike some famous Requiems which emphasize the fear of the Day of Judgment, Fauré wanted his to be an affirmation of his belief that, rather than something to be feared, death should be seen as a welcome release into eternal rest. The ballet is a reflection of the serenity with which age and a lifetime of experience can lead us to face our mortality but also how empathy for both the suffering and joy in the human condition can perhaps bring that wisdom and serenity at any age. 8 A U D I E N C E Project Faust A WORLD PREMIERE DIRECTED BY SALLY BLACKWOOD CHOREOGRAPHY BY ADAM HOUGLAND MUSIC BY CHARLES GOUNOD ORIGINAL LIBRETTO BY MICHAL CARRE AND JULES BARBIER AFTER THE POEM BY GOETHE SCENIC AND LIGHTING DESIGN BY TRAD A BURNS DESIGN ASSISTANCE BY BENJAMIN GANTOSE PROJECT FAUST SCENERY BUILT BY S&J DESIGN MUSIC DIRECTION AND CONDUCTOR BY TARA SIMONCIC SOUND DESIGN BY TIM BARNES COSTUME DESIGN BY ZHANNA GOLDENTUL Garrett Sorenson, Tenor, as Faust Emily Albrink, Soprano, as Marguerite Jorgeandrés Camargo, Bass, as The Devil Maya O’Dell as Girl Child DIRECTOR’S NOTES Project Faust is a new opera/ballet work by Louisville Ballet and Kentucky Opera. Project Faust is the story of Marguerite and Faust bound together in one cyclical moment in time in which heaven and hell become one. In an instant of choice Faust succumbs to his ego and conjures up his inner darkness unleashing his internal demons. Only their moral compass, and the innocence of a child, may guide them through the maze of inferno. Project Faust takes Goethe’s twisted tale and Charles Gounod’s opera and reimagines the legend of Faust in the twenty first century. Within the framework of this timeless classic, we examine the universal question of the Faustian bargain in our contemporary world in which one’s moral compass is at risk of constant corruption by those in power. Project Faust is the story of Marguerite and her resilience despite all odds. The story is guided by a young girl, a child, Marguerite’s child or perhaps a younger version of herself. This young girl is our key into the surreal world of Project Faust as she guides us through the abstracted story like Virgil guiding Dante through the layers of hell. Through the innocent eye of a child we are able to experience the truth of The Beyond. Project Faust is a world premiere which has been created over two years by an ensemble of extraordinary opera and ballet artists, led by a creative team from across the US, UK and Australia. The ensemble has developed a performance language and storytelling aesthetic that steps outside the bounds of both opera and ballet to create a new and innovative hybrid art form. This new dance-driven story is an hour-long marriage of opera and ballet as you have never experienced. Project Faust is a feast for the senses. What’s your price? What would you sell your soul for? Concept creation, music arrangement, dramaturgy, supertitles and libretto re-interpretation by Sally Blackwood. A U D I E N C E 9 Project Faust A Scorpion and A Frog A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream, the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on his back. The frog asks: “How do I know you won’t sting me?” the scorpion says: “Because if I do, I will die too.” The frog is satisfied, and they set out; but midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the sting and starts to drown – but has just enough time to gasp: “Why?” The scorpion replies: “It’s my nature...” The Forest Through the forest, in the undergrowth, among the stones, and over the water, from place to place, piercing the darkness, a shining fire lights up and flees. Watch out! Watch out! From near and far, across the fields, beneath the cypress, like mobile flames, and icy beams, come the souls of the departed. The souls of the departed. The souls of the departed. The Hospital Marguerite Ah, my lover’s voice! His call still chills my heart. Faust Marguerite! (You’re here.) Marguerite Amidst your mocking laughter, demons who surround me, I recognised his voice. Faust Marguerite. (Help me.) 10 A U D I E N C E Marguerite His hand tries to draw me in. He is there, but I am free. I am free. Despite him. I hear him. I see him. Yes, I loved you. Despite myself, I love you. Suffering and death, nothing scares me. Here I am. Standing strong. I have made it. I have made it alone. Here you are. You can’t escape your fate. Faust Yes, here I am, I love you. Here I am, I do still love you. Despite my inner demons, pouring darkness on your soul. I have found you. I have found you again. Now you are safe.
