Thus, in the perception of literary historians, it is often reduced to a marginal phenomenon, that draws its force solely from its powers of receptivity and imitation. Yet, as Philip Sidney writes in his Apology for Poetry, imitation can be transformed into creative appropriation: ‘the diligent imitators of Tully and Demosthenes (most worthy to be imitated) did not so much keep Nizolian paper-books of their figures and phrases, as by attentive translation (as it were) devour them whole, and made them wholly theirs’. The often lamented marginal position of Scottish early modern literature was also the key to its insatiable exploration of continental models and its development of forms that had long exhausted their vitality in Italy or France. -

Iain MacDonald – Linden J Bicket – Emma Dymock 9.30 – 11am Iain MacDonald The Very Heart of Beyond: Gaelic Nationalism and the Work of Fionn Mac Colla. The work of Fionn Mac Colla (Thomas Douglas Macdonald) examines the development of religious ideas and politics on Scottish society. He was primarily concerned with the representation of Scottish Gaelic and the cultural implications for Scotland with the erosion and re-establishment of Gaelic culture and identity in the industrialising modern era. These themes are most comprehensively explored in his best-known works, The Albannach (1932) and And The Cock Crew (1945) J.L. Broom's claim that MacColla's obsession with Calvinism's influence over Scotland had 'reached such proportions as to have distorted his artistic priorities' has influenced attitudes and encouraged lazy critical reception of the writer. It is my contention that MacColla's contribution to the developing 'Scottish Literary Renaissance' of the 1920s and 30s can be described as major, even if, at times, deserved critical reception has been thwarted. Mac Colla's work is primarily concerned with Scottish Gaelic culture, and its history. Although his fictional work concentrates on Gaelic communities in the central Highlands, Mac Colla spent 20 years living and teaching in the Hebrides. In this paper I will demonstrate that Mac Colla's work and themes are interwoven with his own experiences of the Gaelic community. I will also examine the title of this panel with reference to Fionn Mac Colla. -

This is a timely question for scholars to address. Recently, for example, some Scottish literature scholars have written a petition to the Modern Language Association to expand its current Scottish Literature Discussion Group into a Division on Scottish Literature at the MLA. The petition states that recent Scottish literary scholarship has “(a) recognised the wealth and distinctiveness of the Scottish literary tradition, and (b) sought to redress the anglo-centric bias of earlier treatments of Scottish writing…” (Corbett et al 1). -

Sally Mapstone Drunkenness and Ambition in Early Seventeenth-Century Scottish Literature Among the voluminous papers of William Drummond of Hawthomden, not, however with the majority of them in the National Library of Scotland, but in a manuscript identified about thirty years ago and presently in Dundee Uni versity Library, 1 is a small and succinct record kept by the author of significant events and moments in his life; it is entitled "MEMORIALLS." One aspect of this record puzzled Drummond's bibliographer and editor, R. H. MacDonald. This was Drummond's idiosyncratic use of the term "fatall." Drummond first employs this in the "Memorialls" to describe something that happened when he was twenty-five: "Tusday the 21 of Agust [sic] 1610 about Noone by the Death of my father began to be fatall to mee the 25 of my age" (Poems, p. -

ALEXANDER ARBUTHNOT AND THE LYRIC IN POST-REFORMATION SCOTLAND1 Joanna M. Martin A small collection of poems attributed to one M. A. Arbuthnot survives in a group of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century manuscripts associated with the Maitland Family of Lethington, East Lothian. These poems have attracted little critical attention, having been overshadowed by the sizable and important collections of Older Scots verse by William Dunbar and Sir Richard Maitland of Lethington contained in the same manuscripts.2 The poems attributed to Arbuthnot, however, have considerable literary and cultural significance and yet, as this article demonstrates, represent the early stages of the development of a distinctive Protestant poetics3 in the first two decades following the Reformation Parliament in Scotland, when a Calvinist catechesis became the formal framework of the Kirk’s teachings.4 Previous studies of Older 1 I am extremely grateful to Dr Nicola Royan and Dr Jamie Reid Baxter for their comments on an earlier version of this article.
