RUMMER JIMMY COBB FIRST Jimmy Cobb met Julian "Cannonball" Adderley whenD Jimmy was touring with in Ft. Lauderdale. Cannonball came to the hotel where Dinah was staying and asked Jimmy questions about . A couple years later, in the sum- mer of 1955, the Adderley Brothers, Julian and Nat, came to New York with their band. According to Jimmy, Cannonball said that since Bird had passed away maybe he had a chance. Cannonball showed up one night at Café Bohemia on Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village where bassist Oscar Jim Snidero Pettiford was leading the band. Oscar's saxophonist was late, and this large young man was invited up to the stage with his alto saxophone to sit in. The band kicked off "I'll Remember April" at a galloping clip and Cannonball rose to the challenge. By the next day the jazz grapevine in the Big Apple was bristling with talk of the "rein- carnation of Bird." The Adderley Brothers Band played some gigs around the city that summer, but Cannonball had to return to his teach- ing job in Florida in September. But in January 1956, the band returned to New Jeremy Pelt York and their new manager, John Levy, convinced Cannonball to hire replacements for his Florida rhythm section. Cannonball remembered Jimmy and asked him to be the band's drummer. "He was a real sweetheart," Jimmy says of Cannonball, "a smart, intelligent guy who could play." Miles Davis seemed to think so too; in the fall of 1957, after the Adderley Brothers had disbanded, Miles hired Cannonball and Jimmy for his band. In 1959 they recorded what is now a clas- sic and the best-selling jazz album of all time: Kind of Blue with the Miles Davis Peter Zak Sextet. Jimmy is the only living member of that recording band. Cannonball died after a stroke in 1975, but Jimmy joined cornetist Nat Adderley in his band in the 1980s and early 1990s, playing a repertoire that drew heavily from Cannonball's book. Nat died in 2000. This spring alto saxophonist Jim Snidero and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt released an album, Jubilation! Celebrating Cannonball Adderley (Savant), reprising the sound and music of the Adderley Brothers Band. Although Jimmy is not on continued on page 33 Nat Reeves

KRIS ADAMS CORNELIA STREET UNDERGROUND / SEPTEMBER 4 Interpreting lyrics with vulnerability and the same deliberate articulation she uses to render harmony and feel, Kris Adams invites listeners on a deeply personal journey. The vocalist, lyricist and educator loves every note she delivers. She has performed and collaborated with a number of noted artists from Joe Lovano, Wayne Escoffery and Jay Leonhart to Johnathan Kreisberg, Kevin Hays and Gregory Hutchinson. The forthcoming release of We Should Have Danced: The Music of Steve Prosser (Jazzbird Records, 2018), Kris' fourth CD as a leader, promises an equally personal exploration of her late former husband's artistry. The album features Steve's original music, lyrics and poetic sketches reinterpreted by Kris and arranged by Tim Ray. Her record release performance date features Ray, Paul Del Naro and Fernando Brandao. SJ RUFUS REID JAZZ STANDARD / SEPTEMBER 13-16 The Evolving Bassist is the title of a book on the string bass from 1974 but it can eas- ily describe the musical path of its author, bassist Rufus Reid. First studying classical double bass in college, Rufus soon gravitated to the jazz scene, moving from the West Coast to New York by 1976. He co-founded and co-led the jazz studies program at William Paterson College. Since retiring from that job he's pursued both playing and studying composition and arranging, a pursuit that culminated in the recording of, and Grammy nominations for, his large ensemble suite: Quiet Pride: The Elizabeth Catlett Project (Motéma). At this gig he has saxophonist Yosvany Terry join his Out Front Trio, with pianist Steve Allee and drummer Duduka da Fonseca, for a live recording. GK PAUL MCCANDLESS & CHARGED PARTICLES JAZZ FORUM / SEPTEMBER 14-15 While "virtuosic master of the jazz oboe, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, English horn and flute" might seem a bit hyperbolic, Paul McCandless nevertheless manages to fully earn and own that remarkable accolade. Best known for his work in the extraordinary genre-defying ensemble Oregon, Paul has dazzled listeners for decades with his high-flying lyricism, his intensely creative improvising and his seemingly boundless creativity. A nonpareil instrumentalist, Paul perhaps never fully got his due for his work as a composer, despite a steady stream of fantastic original works. His collaboration with the Bay Area trio Charged Particle, featuring keyboard player Murray Low, bassist Aaron Germain and drummer Jon Krosnick, may change this as they focus on Paul’s compositions during a two-year tour that also brings them to Lake George Sept. 16. Charged Particles, with Tod Dickow, plays a tribute to Michael Brecker at Suffolk YJCC Sept. 13. SH PETER ZAK SMALLS / SEPTEMBER 14-15 Pianist Peter Zak has made his mark since coming to New York City in 1989, prima- rily leading trios and recording over a dozen CDs as a leader or soloist, along with making numerous albums as a valuable sideman, mostly for SteepleChase. Peter's light touch and improvising gifts keep him in demand and he interacts with his musi- cians rather than relegate them to supporting roles. In addition to his superb com- posing, Peter also has a knack for uncovering neglected jazz works. All these strengths are prominent on his new CD, One Mind, which features bassist Marcos Varela, drum- mer and frequent collaborator Billy Drummond and tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake. The CD release party at Smalls features a similar band with guest on tenor saxophone. KD RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA WHITE PLAINS JAZZ FESTIVAL AT ARTSWESTCHESTER / SEPTEMBER 14 Diverse as where he has lived, Rudresh Mahanthappa's modern alto saxophone pro- duces inventions stemming from Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and Arthur Blythe. Born in Italy of Indian émigré parents, raised in Colorado, educated at DePaul University, North Texas State and Berklee, and residing in , Rudresh employs a dazzling improvised sound on the razor's edge. A six-time Downbeat Critics Poll win- ner, he garnered Best CD honors for Bird Calls (2015). Recording for the ACT label, leader of his Indo-Pak Collective (Agrima CD), and bandmate of the equally acclaimed pianist Vijay Iyer, his style can stun you initially, leading into to a realm most find technically impossible, but protein rich and speedy. The fabulous bassist Francois Moutin and drummer Johnathan Blake round out this groundbreaking trio. RACHEL CASWELL JAZZ AT KITANO / SEPTEMBER 15 Rachel Caswell spent most of her student years as a jazz instrumentalist before switching to singing. Yet Rachel didn't make performing her full-time career until 2015, around the time her duo CD All I Know drew critical acclaim. Rachel's flawless tone, creative phrasing and interest in exploring many different genres make her a vocalist with unlimited potential. She excels in finding uncharted paths into well- known songs and has considerable chops as a scat singer. Rachel's new CD We're All in the Dance features guitarist Dave Stryker, her younger sister Sara on violin, key- boardist Fabian Almazan, bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Johnathan Blake. Rachel's CD release party features Dave and Sara, with the rhythm section consisting of Glenn Zaleski, Matt Aronoff and McClenty Hunter Jr. KD ED CHERRY BAR NEXT DOOR / SEPTEMBER 22 Guitarist Ed Cherry's first gig with an internationally-known organist was at age 18 or 19 with Jimmy McGriff when Ed was living in his hometown, New Haven, Conn. He moved to NYC in 1978 and Dizzy Gillespie immediately put him to work in his var- ious ensembles; he performed with Dizzy for 15 years and shortly after Dizzy died, Ed played on Havana Café, a seminal recording by Paquito d'Rivera. Throughout the past 40 years, he continued his association with organists including John Patton, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jimmy Smith. His second CD on Positone, Soultree features Kyle Koehler on organ and Anwar Marshall on drums. That same group plays at the Bar Next Door; it's a cozy space, perfect for Ed's understated, elegant organ trio. YE

RICHARD CLEMENTS RUSSIAN SAMOVAR / SEPTEMBER 23 A versatile and powerful jazz pianist, Richard Clements somewhat epitomizes the notion of an under-the-radar artist. It's rather confusing to contemplate his lack of broader recognition, given that his playing style appeals to a wide swath of keyboard tastes. A disciple of the legendary Barry Harris, Richard has thoroughly absorbed the coach's lessons, offering up a harmonically sophisticated musical palette and thought- ful comping, while also approaching bebop-infused solos with an attack that would make Bud Powell proud. At the same time, Richard is also capable of pivoting into other territory, and is acclaimed for his ability to lay down rich, soulful blues piano. His quartet with vocalist Joy Brown, saxophonist Zaid Nasser and bassist David Colding joins him for this brunch time performance. SH

CHRIS POTTER VILLAGE VANGUARD / SEPTEMBER 25-30 Rhythmically dexterous and melodically formidable, saxophonist Chris Potter is a musical grenade with an unmatched style. Since moving to New York City in 1989, Chris has shaped a tone that pats and punches as much as it saunters and strolls. Said tone has been seen on record and live with everyone from Dave Holland to Herbie Hancock to John Scofield, to name a few. As a leader, Chris' discography includes over 15 releases with the most recent, 2017's The Dreamer is the Dream, garnering much acclaim with All About Jazz stating, "Potter's responsiveness as a leader shines through in the beautifully orchestrated work of this quartet." For his performances at the Village Vanguard, Chris is joined by pianist James Francies and drummer Eric Harland. EW PASQUALE GRASSO MEZZROW / MONDAYS AND BAR NEXT DOOR / SEPTEMBER 28 A clubgoer once asked, "And who's playing piano?" The answer was guitar master Pasquale Grasso. Taste, touch and virtuosity make up the Italian-born artist's full and distinctive sound. Offering listeners cascading shapes during solo ballads played ruba- to and dizzying, lighter-than-air eighth note lines, Pasquale has developed into one of the most captivating players on the New York scene. His connection to the music has allowed him to become a Jazz Ambassador to the U.S. Embassy, touring extensively across Europe and the Middle East. He has collaborated with such like-minded yet varied artists as Frank Wess, China Moses, Jimmy Wormworth, Harry Allen, Bucky Pizzarelli and brother Luigi Grasso. He plays the happy-hours set at Mezzrow every Monday, and with his trio—Ari Roland, bass, and Keith Balla, drums—at Bar Next Door. That fact, coupled with his extreme intelligence, talent and under- standing, playing with Ron is akin to doing quantum physics. So much information is coming from him when he plays. I'm so glad those guys chose me." Donald brings to the trio his silken, ser- pentine, fiery sax lines, fortified by two of his forward-thinking musical concepts: Nouveau Swing, his mix of jazz, hip hop and R&B, and Quantum Jazz, Donald's multiverse approach to improvisation and composition. "With Nouveau Swing, the ride cymbal is playing a straight-ahead swing beat, with some funky beats on the bass drum and snare," Donald says. "With Quantum Jazz, I realized that the African drums had a link to quantum physics, because the drummers of West Africa are connected to the universe. So that led me to understand that we think of music in two dimensions. Through Quantum Jazz I can hear music in four dimensions, with new ideas in time in every direction." Donald's Quantum Jazz theory origi- nates in the rich, polyglot Afro-New Orleans culture he grew up in, especially the Mardi Gras Indian groups led by his father, Donald Sr. "We were doing a chant, 'Tu-Way-Pocky-Way,' and I started hear- ing . - * " - " , Ê 9 Ê / NEW JERSEY JAZZ By Don Jay Smith LUCY YEGHIAZARYAN TAVERN ON GEORGE / SEPTEMBER 12 New Brunswick's historic Tumulty's Pub closed in 2017, but the landmark has been replaced by an expanded pub which features Wednesday jazz in conjunction with the New Brunswick Jazz Project. Lucy Yeghiazaryan is an example of the top-notch tal- ent appearing every Wednesday at the popular establishment. Born in a small village in Armenia, Lucy and her family immigrated to the United States where she attend- ed NJPAC's Jazz for Teens programs and later earned her degree in jazz performance from William Paterson University. She was a finalist for the prestigious International Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in 2015 and has worked with Winard Harper, Eliot Zigmund, Bill Goodwin, Don Braden and Bernadette Peters. Lucy also plays vio- lin and sings with the acapella group YY Sisters who enjoy popularity in the Armenian community. VANESSA PEREA J. OWEN GRUNDY PIER / SEPTEMBER 14 Jersey Jazz critic Joe Lang called Vanessa Perea "one of the brightest vocal lights on the current scene." This month she shows off her talent with the NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band joining guest artist Paquito D'Rivera for the free concert paying tribute to WBGO and the 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert. Bandleader Dick Lowenthal turned to the young NJCU graduate to provide the vocals because of her mature, confident and polished style. The New Jersey resident grew up with salsa, R&B and church music, but immersed herself in jazz during her undergraduate days. Her inspirations include Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan and her 2014 debut CD, Soulful Days, garnered comparisons to those queens of jazz vocals, marking her as a rising star. EDDIE ALLEN CENTRAL JERSEY JAZZ FESTIVAL IN NEW BRUNSWICK / SEPTEMBER 15 Acclaimed as "a horn man to watch" (The Washington Post), trumpeter Eddie Allen has demonstrated incredible versatility since graduating from William Paterson University. He has accompanied jazz greats Art Blakey, Randy Weston, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Jimmy Heath, Mongo Santamaria and Steve Turre; and he has played on Broadway for shows such as "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Black & Blue" and "Jelly's Last Jam." He brings "3hree for Louis" to New Brunswick, paying tribute to trumpet legend Louis Armstrong. With Cecil Bridgewater and Antoine Drye repre- senting different generations of the trumpet, the group plays classic Armstrong with a twist giving each player the freedom to approach the music in his own way. Joining them are pianist Oscar Perez, bassist Kenny Davis and drummer Carl Allen. RIZA AND MARCUS PRINTUP CENTRAL JERSEY JAZZ FESTIVAL IN SOMERVILLE / SEPTEMBER 16 This husband and wife team is a wonderful musical match. Harpist Riza Printup began her studies as a classical musician at Indiana University but gradually transi- tioned to jazz. Equally at home in both genres, she has performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Chick Corea, , Paquito D'Rivera, Yo-Yo Ma and Kathleen Battle. Her trumpet-playing husband is a long-time member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and an adjunct faculty member at the New School. He has worked with Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon, and many others. Marcus has released 14 solo recordings and is much in demand as a composer, arranger and educator.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links. Rob Ronzello used to visit the late arranger Bill Finegan at his home in Monroe, CT. Bill was one of Glenn Miller's arrangers during his band's most popular years. Rob would sometimes bring tapes of Miller tunes, mostly from air checks that had no arranger credit, hoping Bill could set the record straight... One day Rob brought "In The Middle Of A Dream" from 1939. Bill recognized it as his own. Then at the age of 84, using a walker, Finegan went to his piano and played a modulation in his arrangement from memory. He hadn't heard it in all those years.

OMEHOW THE TITLE AQUARELA do Carlos Barbosa-Lima (Water colors ofS Carlos Barbosa-Lima) mirrors the music of Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa- Lima, which is indeed made of aquarela and seems not only appealing, but wholly right. The liquescent soupçon of fingers on the strings of his guitar often suggest the caress of a paintbrush dipped in water col- ors, making spectacular arcs on paper. CANNONBALL... continued from page 17 that album, Jim says he wanted the drum- mer for a special celebration of Cannonball's 90th Anniversary taking place Sept. 16 at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. "We played with Jimmy last year and wanted to get him for this gig, which will be a more comprehensive program of Cannonball's music than the album, including some of the classic tunes Jimmy recorded with the Adderleys." Cannonball has a very important place in Jim's musical life. Like Cannonball he is an alto sax player who doesn't play any tenor sax. "I was too young to see Cannonball live," Jim says. He was 17 when Cannonball died. "I studied with Phil Woods as a teen. Phil lit the fire for me as an alto player, but Cannonball and Sonny Stitt illuminated the way. Cannonball brought a unique, singing quality to the alto sax and his definite joy and exuber- ance were refreshing; yet at the same time he had so much command of the horn and there was depth to his message." Jimmy, whose 90th anniversary is com- ing up next year, continues to remain an active presence in jazz. After leaving Miles in 1962, he was part of the rhythm section from that band that became the Wynton Kelly Trio with bassist Paul Chambers. From 1970 to 1978 he accompanied Sarah Vaughan, and since then he has worked with a veritable Who's Who of jazz lumi- naries. He also leads his own quartet, Cobb's Mob, which has recorded for the Smoke Sessions label. Celebrating Cannonball's 90th at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on Sept. 16 features drummer Jimmy Cobb with Jim Snidero, alto sax; Jeremy Pelt, trumpet; Peter Zak, piano, and Nat Reeves, bass. Jim, Jeremy and Nat present Jubilation! Celebrating Cannonball Adderley with pianist Mike LeDonne and drummer Joe Farnsworth at the Side Door Sept. 22.
