Roach9 Division of Education, University of Sheffield, to whom I am indebted for supervising the research and thesis, C " SUMMARY THE HISTORY OF SECONDARY ' EDUCATION' IN'SHEFFIELD, 1902-39 In 1902 there were only two schools for boys and one for girls which afforded secondary education in Sheffield. On the advice of Michael Sadler the l. e. a. took over and amalgamated the boys' schools to form a first rank grammar school (King Edward's) and converted the Central H#ier Elementary School into a secondary school. Despite the con- tinuing glaring paucity of secondary places no further provision was made before"1918 when one new school for boys and one for girls were opened in converted mansions. In 1927 a further boys' school was instituted but all three had to function in highly unfavourable premises until 1939. Extensions and conversions did little to improve matters but in 1933 the Central Secondary Schools (which had become separate boys' and girls' schools before 1914) were re-housed in purpose-built premises in the suburbs, thus permitting the Pupil-Teacher Centre, which had shared their old, cramped city-centre site, to expand and complete its transformation into a secondary school. -

Kathryn Dodd, nee Jones, (1961-68) sends us this fascinating account of her time at High Storrs: “I wrote this piece on my experiences at High Storrs as part of a bigger piece on the socio-psychological effects of upward „social mobility‟ on individuals who experience it. I was a working-class child from Pitsmoor, Sheffield and passed the 11 plus. I attended High Storrs Grammar for seven years and went on to do Sociology and Politics at university. I became an academic, specialising in medical sociology, and researched and taught at Leicester University, Coventry University, the Thomas Coram Research Unit and Thames Valley University. The section on High Storrs is not happy or celebratory and I hope readers do not find it too negative. It was my experience and I write the story as I remember it. I would be happy for comments and corrections. My memory for names is appalling so any gaps you can fill would be welcomed.” I had to get up at seven o’clock to arrive at school for ten to nine, so I couldn’t fit with my family’s usual routine. My dad got me up early at first, but after a few weeks I didn’t bother him and got off to school on my own. Later, when my brothers and sisters started secondary school, I took over making breakfast for them, so mum and dad could sleep in. A regular saucepan of porridge got us started and was followed up with egg and beans, or bacon sandwiches, or a boiled egg and bread fingers. -

SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL Cabinet Report 9 Report of: Sonia Sharp ______________________________________________________________ Date: 12 th May 2010 ______________________________________________________________ Subject: Strategy for Expanding Primary School Places ______________________________________________________________ Author of Report: Peter Mucklow 0114 2735720 ______________________________________________________________ Summary: The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of the impact of the growth in population and the requirement to provide additional primary school places from 2010/11. ______________________________________________________________________ Reason for Recommendation: Providing sufficient primary school places is essential to the City of Opportunity priority to raise attainment and aspirations, and is a statutory duty of the Council. This will mean that all Sheffield children reaching primary school age in 2011 and beyond will continue to have a school place in the area of the city in which they live. Recommendations: (i) note the Council’s duty to provide primary school places to meet demand, and endorse the policy of securing permanent high quality accommodation for the additional primary school pupils, as essential to their attainment, in those areas of the city where the trend for higher births is sustained; (ii) give permission for officers to consult with parents and carers, for the schools identified for expansion, and to report back to Cabinet in the summer with firm proposals following the -

From: Professor John Coldron, Chair of Governors, Abbeydale Grange School Date: 22nd January 2010 Dear Sonia Herewith are the objections of the Governors of Abbeydale Grange to the proposal to discontinue the school. As you will see we believe that this is the wrong decision. We have responded in the spirit with which we have engaged with the LA throughout, that is on the assumption that all concerned are conscientiously attempting to determine the way forward that is in the best interests of the young people currently at the school and for all students and their parents in Sheffield. Neither the governors nor the council can demonstrate beyond doubt whether future students will be better off as a result of their differing recommendations. In the end that is a judgement call and rightly the responsibility of the elected members following advice from their officers. We believe that the evidence and arguments show that the cabinet's judgement is ultimately speculative and the promised results highly questionable, while what is certain is the harm that is being done, and will be done, to the welfare and education of the current students despite the efforts to mitigate this. This is a cost the cabinet judge to be worth paying for the benefit of future students. Our argument is that the council do not have to ask students and parents to pay this cost, nor gamble on uncertain gains. They need the places and the alternative of supporting the evident improvements in attainment and guiding the school to transform is the better bet. -
