Yde (Referee) [email protected] Received and published: 30 April 2015 The number of publications on glaciers and other cryospheric phenomena in Green- land has increased significantly in recent decades. At the same time, the political system in Greenland has changed and so has the use of Greenlandic place names. However, this linguistic development is not reflected in the growing international scien- tific literature on glaciers in Greenland, and available information on the internet is not very helpful. Hence, it is very relevant to inform editorial teams of cryospheric journals and researchers, who work in Greenland or apply Greenlandic glacier data, about the correct use of Greenlandic place names in international literature. C628 Reviewer Hester Jiskoot has already made some excellent suggestions for how the database and paper can be improved, so there is no reason for me to repeat these. However, I do find the usefulness of the data rather limited. The database only contains information on 733 glaciers out of approximately 20300 Greenlandic local glaciers and ice caps (Rastner et al., 2012) and hundreds of outlet glaciers from the Greenland Ice Sheet/Indlandsisen (?). A more useful database would include all glacier names shown on the 1:250,000 topographic map series with updated orthography and correction of misspellings, and an indication of whether the name is official or unofficial.

Its main contribution is that, in addition to recounting narratives of human adaptation, it shows how adaptation has been connected with the development of the settle- ment pattern in the two societies. Adaptation affecting certain characteristics in settlement patterns of the earliest Norse societies in the Faroe Islands and Greenland included new land management practices, changes in livestock com- position and diversifi ed subsistence activities. The character of the adaptation was “learning-by-doing”. Before the 20th century, adaptation of the Inuit to Greenland consisted of both short-term responses, such as shifts between settlement sites and mobility, and long-term strategies, including new hunting techniques and well-defi ned societal rules and practices.

    Greenland Pilot Explanations of the place names Updated to Danish Chart Corrections 27/2020 2 Greenlandic place names ISBN no. 9788792107855 Preface 3 Preface The purpose of the release of the “Greenland Pilot - Explanations of the place names” has been to bring together all the information about the Greenlandic place names, and to provide users of the newly released West Greenland charts to find out about the significance of the place names. The new charts use new Greenlandic orthography as opposed to the older charts as well as some publications that use old Greenlandic orthography. The “Greenland Pilot - Explanations of the place names” have been prepared on information on place names in ”Den grønlandske Lods I, Vestgrønland“, “Den grønlandske Lods, 2. del, Østgrønland“ and “Den grønlandske Havnelods“. (Only in Danish). All place names have been reviewed and updated by Oqaasileriffik – The Greenland Language Secretariat. The publication includes “translation“ / explanation in English of Greenlandic place names specified with both new and old Greenlandic orthography. Opening of the Meeting 1.1 The Chairman of the West Greenland Commission (WGC), Mr Ted Potter (European Union), opened the meeting and welcomed participants from the Member Parties and accredited NGOs (Annex 1). He referred to the previous valuable exchanges of information at the Commission’s meetings in 2014 and noted that it had been agreed that States of origin would share experiences with Greenland on approaches to improving the monitoring of landings with a view to ensuring full reporting. An Ad hoc Working Group had been established inter alia to recommend options to enhance the monitoring and control of the West Greenland salmon fishery. He thanked the Group and Denmark (in respect of the Faroe Islands and Greenland) for preparing a Draft Plan to implement the Group’s recommendations. He indicated that over the two days available to it, the Commission needed to review events in the 2014 fishery at West Greenland, discuss the Draft Plan for enhanced monitoring and management of the salmon fishery at West Greenland, consider how the six tenets of effective management of an Atlantic salmon fishery might be applied to an evaluation of the salmon fisheries of other Parties and establish, at a minimum, a framework or parameters for the development of a new agreement taking into consideration the Draft Plan developed by Denmark (in respect of the Faroe Islands and Greenland).
