ROSARY Tuesday – the Sorrowful Mysteries (In Families) 13 / 10 / 2020 THE HOLY ROSARY Tuesday – The Sorrowful Mysteries (In Families) Suggestions: 1. It would be ideal that the family altar, that is adored with the Statue of Our Lady, be lighted and be adorned with flowers. 2. It is advisable that the various parts are assigned to different members of the family well in advanced. 3. An appropriate verse of a Marian Hymn may be sung between the decades. Or, it could be ‘The Prayer of Mary at Fatima’. 4. This service is meant to be conducted in the family. Please do not assemble at the ward crosses, nor in SCC’s nor any other place outside the house. 5. It is our desire that this service reaches every home. Hence you may forward it to others by WhatsApp, E-Mail, etc. 6. This series (9th – 16th October 2020) is prepared by the Diocesan Catechetical Centre; and coordinated by the Diocesan Centre for Liturgy, Old Goa. To subscribe to them free of cost WhatsApp your name on: +91 9518352793. Please do not make any calls to subscribe. Preparation ❖ It would be ideal that the family gathers around the family altar or near your grotto. ❖ A little decoration and more lit candles will add fervour and will create an atmosphere of prayer. ❖ If possible, keep incense sticks ready. And add a little incense after each decade. ❖ Allot members to read the Biblical passages and the glimpses of Fatima. Make the Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Hymn: “Immaculate Mary” Immaculate Mary! Our hearts are on fire, Ave, ave, ave Maria! that title so wondrous Ave, ave, ave Maria! fills all our desire. 1 Introduction: We have gathered together as a family to pray and to recall two identical events in the Church history which took place in the month of October. In the year 1571 there was a war between Muslim Turks and the European Christian army. The Turks were powerful and there was a great terror that the entire Europe would fall in the hands of Muslims. Therefore, Pope Pius V requested all Catholic Christians to pray the Rosary. And on 7th October under the leadership of Don Juan, an Austrian Military general, the Turkish army was defeated at Lepanto. Today is 13 October, another historical day. Mother Mary appeared to Francisco, Lucia and Jacinta from 13 May to 13 October 1917 at Cova Da Iria near Fatima in Portugal, Mother Mary requested these children to pray as many Rosaries as they could to stop the First World War which had begun in 1914, and rightly on 11th November 1918 it came to an end. The Immaculate Mother requested them to make penance for the sins of the world. You and I, are called to intercede for the world. As a Fatima family, united in prayer and sacrifice to bring peace and harmony in the world, let us take Mother Mary and Jesus with us to crush the social evils that are prowling in our society. Apostles Creed (I believe), Our Father, 3 Hail Marys (For the gift of Faith, Hope and Charity) and Glory be… The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony of Our Lord in the Garden. Word of God: Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done. Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and gave Him strength (Lk. 22:42, 43). Glimpses of Fatima: On 13 May 1917, the woman wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand. She asked Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia to devote themselves to the Holy Trinity and to pray ‘The Rosary’ every day, to bring peace to the world. The children reported a prophecy that prayer would lead to an end to the Great War, and that on 13 October that year, the Lady would reveal her identity and perform a miracle so that all may believe. Prayer: Immaculate Mother (as we add incense to the burning coal) we lift up to you our entire world suffering from COVID 19. We offer this decade for the complete eradication of this pandemic. May God’s will be done. As the angel of God came to comfort Jesus in his passion, may the heavenly grace enfold all those who are affected, afflicted and have lost their dear ones. Make us worthy to remain under your white mantle and enable us to realise the power of the Holy Trinity and intercede for the gift of Love, peace and healing for our broken world. (Put incense in the fire/coal). Our Father, Hail Mary (10) and Glory be… Hymn: “Immaculate Mary” We pray for God's glory, may His kingdom come! Ave, ave, ave Maria! We pray for His vicar, Ave, ave, ave Maria! our Father, and Rome. 2 The Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging of Our Lord at the Pillar. Word of God: Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime" (Lk. 23:22a). Glimpses of Fatima: The second appearance occurred on 13 June, the feast of Saint Anthony, patron of the local parish church. On this occasion, Lúcia asked the Virgin if the three children would go to heaven when they die. She heard Mary’s reply, "Yes, I shall take Francisco and Jacinta soon, but you will remain a little longer, since Jesus wishes you to make me known and loved on Earth. He wishes also for you to establish devotion in the world to my Immaculate Heart”. Prayer: Immaculate Mother, we pray for our distorted world where we have lost the sense of human dignity. During this decade we shall pray for our country India where innocent people are persecuted, murdered, raped and have to face untold atrocities. Help our leaders to uphold the constitutional values and work consciously for the upliftment of the downtrodden. (As we add incense to the burning coal may the heavenly host burn all that is evil in ourselves and in the society). Our Father, Hail Mary (10) and Glory be… O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Hymn: “Immaculate Mary” We pray for our mother the Church upon earth, Ave, ave, ave Maria! and bless, sweetest Lady, Ave, ave, ave Maria! the land of our birth. The Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning of Our Lord with thorns. Word of God: Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him (Mt. 27:27-28). Glimpses of Fatima: On 13 August 1917, the provincial administrator Artur Santos took the children into custody, jailing them before they could reach the Cova da Iria. That month, instead of the usual apparition in the Cova da Iria on 13 August, the children reported that they saw the Virgin Mary on 19 August, a Sunday, at nearby Valinhos. She asked them again to pray the rosary daily, spoke about the miracle coming in October, and asked them "to pray a lot for the sinners and make sacrifices to save souls. 3 Prayer: Immaculate Mother, we lift up unto you all the people and the television journalist who are fighting for the social justice. Protect them from the evil forces that are waiting to crown them with thorns of persecution, imprisonment, baseless fault and threats. May they experience Divine protection in the uncertainties of life for the good of the humanity. (As we add incense to the burning coal may mother May spread her protective mantle on all). Our Father, Hail Mary (10) and Glory be… Hymn: “Immaculate Mary” For poor, sick, afflicted thy mercy we crave; Ave, ave, ave Maria! and comfort the dying, Ave, ave, ave Maria! thou light of the grave. The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: The carrying of the Cross by our Lord to Calvary. Word of God: Jesus said, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me" (Mk. 8:34). Glimpses of Fatima: The Immaculate Mother refused to announce who she was, but promised to visit them every 13th of the month. Between May and October 1917, this woman appeared to teach the Rosary while sharing the secrets of life and death. The three children claimed to have seen the Blessed Virgin Mary in a total of six apparitions between 13 May and 13 October 1917. As it was revealed by the Virgin Mary, Francisco and Jacinta Marto died in the international flu pandemic that began in 1918 and swept the world for two years. Francisco Marto died at home on 4 April 1919, at the age of ten. Jacinta died at the age of nine on 20 February 1920. Lúcia continued to report private visions periodically throughout her life. In 1925 Mary asked her to convey the message of the First Saturdays Devotion. In 1929, Lúcia reported that Mary returned and repeated her request for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. Prayer: Immaculate Mother we thank you for revealing yourself to the little children who were pure in thoughts, words and deeds. They were steadfast in their faith inspite of misunderstanding, mockery and even the political pressure and imprisonment. Help us to shed our pride and ego so that we may grow in childlike faith and experience your love and mercy.

  • THE TRUE STORY of FATIMA Introduction
THE TRUE STORY OF FATIMA Father John de Marchi, I.M.C, Introduction Through no gift of the author's, but by the divine power, this is one of the very great stories of modern times. The remarkable events occurring near Fatima, Portugal, in the months from May to October, 1917, gain significance and new meaning with every passing day; the friends and followers of Our Lady of Fatima, for whom this volume speaks, increase each year by numberless legion in prayerful certitude that what we are revealing here is true. The author is a witness to this truth, having lived at Fatima for many years, and this plain book's pretension to importance is that it is able to present for the first time to Americans the full and documented background against which God has written His own prescription for peace. Much of this account is lovely and can be counted on to fulfil almost anyone's story- book expectations, as it tells of the shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco. But it is also a divinely serious narrative recalling, to the likely discomfort of many, the reality of heaven and hell, and bringing to necessary attention other primary matters too often and too long placed out of mind. It is hoped that this book, in its completeness, will provide a kind of text on Fatima, and the author feels obliged, in the face of such ambition, to list the documents on which it has been based. I have used the Portuguese newspapers of the period, especially the Seculo, the Diario de Noticias, and the Mundo, all at the time important pro-government journals, anticlerical in both policy and tone.

From the beginnings of human history, people have designated particular locations as sacred and traveled to them in a pilgrimage. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 314 CE, Christian shrines emerged very soon at martyrs’ tombs and other places of historical importance in development of this religion. The distribution of physical relics created many of the Christian shrines in Western Europe. Popular belief concerning Mary began to evolve upon Jesus’ death; and in turn, most of these beliefs were adopted into Roman Catholic doctrine and became Mariology or Marianism, the veneration of Mary. In Western Europe, a number of shrines were created from an apparition of Mary to local people, and with any shrine’s approval by the institutional Church, it gained an international reputation and following; shrines not granted this approval by the Church have remained less internationally well-known and mostly locally based.

  • Our Lady of Fatima: 'Pray the Rosary Every Day'
Our Lady of Fatima: ‘Pray the Rosary every day’ by Fr Justin Ford One of the most famous claimed visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary was in the village of Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. From 13 May to 13 October 1917 Our Lady is said to have appeared six times at noon on the 13th of the month, in the field of Cova da Iria near Fatima, to three shepherd children, Lucia Dos Santos (10) and her cousins Francisco Marto (9) and Jacinta Marto (7). At the first apparition only the children were present, but by the time of the final apparition, the crowd had grown to an estimated 70,000. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Timeline of the Apparitions of Fatima 1916 The children have three apparitions of the ‘Angel of Peace’ during 1916; at the time they keep these secret. 13 May 1917 First Apparition of Our Lady. The children agree to keep it secret, but Jacinta lets slip the experience to her family, and knowledge of the story starts to spread. 13 June 1917 Second Apparition. People in the village are divided about whether they believe the children’s story, but about 50 people gather with them. In the following weeks, Lucia’s mother takes her to the parish priest hoping he will make her take back the story. He is doubtful, but makes no decision. 13 July 1917 Third Apparition. Crowd is about 3,000. Mary tells three ‘Secrets’ to the children. She promises to work a miracle at the final vision on 13 October so that all will believe.

The sun suddenly tumed palé, emitted brilliant rays of multi- colored light, spun three times on its axis and then, to the horror of the assembled multitude, “power-dived” dizzily to- wards earth. A terrified cry rose from the crowd as thousands fell to their knees thinking the end of the world was at hand. Among those present was a correspondent for one of the major News Services in this country. Next day, from Lisbon, he cabled a long and impressive story about the Miracle of the Sun. But it was never published.

Third Part of the Secret Revealed on 13 July 1917. Sister Lucia had written down the following: At the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendour that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!'. And we saw in an immense light that is God: ‘something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it' a Bishop dressed in White ‘we had the impression that it was the Holy Father'. Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Reli- gious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions.
