Pero también apunta a que actualmente la lectura no se limita a eso, sino también incluye la decodificación de símbolos y a la organización e integración de información. Es este tipo de integración en la cual se localiza la lectura de los comics (Eisner, 2005). Aún cuando los comics no son aceptados generalmente como un medio literario, han sido utilizados de manera popular por más de noventa años a nivel mundial. Pero en los últimos años las imágenes y su lectura han comenzado a formar parte de la sociedad de modo cotidiano, fenómeno en el cual los comics forman parte fundamental al igual que el cine, la televisión, los juegos de video e incluso la internet. El comic proviene de las tiras cómicas publicadas en periódicos que fueron evolucionando y haciéndose más sofisticadas con el paso del tiempo hasta llegar a la novela gráfica. Esta sofisticación ha surgido en respuesta a la reputación de los comics acerca de que al ser fáciles de leer se asocian directamente con la falta de cultura y desarrollo intelectual; de modo que en los últimos años los comics han buscado atraer más atención a su contenido literario de forma similar a la importancia que se le da a su forma por medio de las novelas gráficas. Marshall McLuhan y Quentin Fiore indican, en su libro The medium is the massage (1967), que las sociedades se influencian más por la naturaleza del medio del cual reciben un mensaje que por el contenido de dicha comunicación; de modo que al 1 percibir al comic con un formato pictórico y colorido se intuye que su contenido es simple (en Eisner, 2004).
