In the twelve years of its existence over 200.000 persons from all over Europe were imprisoned here and in the numerous subsidiary camps. More than 43.000 died. On April 29 1945, American troops liberated the survivors. In the north-eastern corner of the square stands St Mary's Church, frequently referred to as a basilica. With its two slender towers reaching high above the whole city, it is one of Krakow's landmarks. Visitors are welcome to broaden their knowledge in different thematic areas, to reconsider existing clichés and to have a hands-on experience of history. Exhibits are there to be handled - few are kept in glass cabinets. Everything waits to be touched and experienced: Open the drawers and closets, rummage through them and discover! The smell of the Trabi is still originally GDR-like: take a seat, turn the ignition key, eyes front, foot on the gas pedal and here we go! Typical engine noises of the Trabi and a simulated ride through the concrete-slab housing estate give an impression of what it was like to go for a ride in such an original. There is much more to discover in the DDR Museum: watch TV in the authentic GDR living room, rummage through the drawers of the Karat wall unit. The spice reg in the kitchen still smells of back then and the pressure cookeris still standing on the stove. There are documentaries for the visitors to watch in original GDR movie chairs and it is possible to replay the football game “GDR vs. FRG” by oneself or to dance the Lipsi. All this is peppered with the most important information about every topic. Interactive, playful, vivid, entertaining and scientifically well-founded, the DDR Museum offers you the opportunity to experience the GDR everyday life yourself. 1200 Lunch and leisure time at Alexanderplatz [Own expense] 1300 Coach transfer to Potsdam. Include entrance to Cecilienhof Palace (site of the Potsdam Conference in 1945) [Fee covered] Cecilienhof was the last palace built by the Hohenzollern family. The house was designed by Paul Schultze-Naumburg to look like an English Tudor country house and built between 1914 and 1917. The brick and oak timberframe building, including six courtyards and 55 carved brick chimney tops, should have been completed in 1915, but construction was delayed due to the outbreak of World War I and Crown Prince Wilhelm and Cecilie could not move in until August 1917. Wilhelm followed his father into exile one year later, while Cecilie stayed at the palace until she fled from the approaching Red Army in February 1945. Cecilienhof was the location of the Potsdam Conference between 17 July and 2 August 1945. On 26 July 1945, Churchill and Truman issued the Potsdam Declaration defining the terms for Japanese surrender, while Truman had already given order to prepare the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 1700 Coach transfer to accommodation 1930 Dinner in Berlin [Own expense] 2130 Return to accommodation
