The Cemeteries and Memorials of the WW1 Clare War Dead The Cemeteries and Memorials of The WW1 Clare War Dead Approximately 680 Clare men and women that died during WW1 are buried or named in 251 cemeteries or memorials in 22 countries throughout the world. The map gives the countries involved. The exact location of each grave or memorial panel is given over the next 90 pages along with photos of all the cemeteries and memorials. See Index on page 91. England Belgium Germany Turkey C C Canada Scotland Iraq Ireland Israel Wales Pakistan France Burma Greece India Sudan Egypt Tanzania USA South Africa ( Australia New Zealand Marshal Foch’s Tribute to the Irish Soldiers who died in the First World War (Nov 1928): “Some of the flower of Irish chivalry rests in the cemeteries that have been reserved in France, and the French people will always have these reminders of the debt that France owes to Irish valour. We shall always see that the graves of these heroes from across the sea are lovingly tended, and we shall try to ensure that the generations that come after us shall never forget the heroic dead of Ireland.” These cemeteries and memorials are kept in immaculate condition by the Commonwealth War Graves Commision (CWGC) and the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). The CWGC spends over £55 million each year maintaining 23,000 cemeteries and memorials in 153 countries that honour 1,700,000 people who died in WW1 and WW2. The ABMC cares for 8 U.S. military cemeteries and 12 monuments to honour the U.S. troops who died in WW1. 1 Australia Adelaide (West Terrace) Cemetery, Adelaide,in South Australia G / M - Grave / Memorial John Larkin, Killaloe, died Dec 1917, Australian Infantry, G/M Reference: Western. Et en effet nous citions., comme un des principaux collabo rateurs, M. l'abbé Parenty, dont les Notes précieuses servent si souvent à ses successeurs dans lacarrière difficile, scabreuse, de l'histoire locale. • Milton's War Trophy #9563
Milton’s War Trophy #9563 - The 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion at the Canal du Nord in September 1918 By Richard Laughton Most Canadians, like me, probably thought that the armaments that adorn our local parks, cenotaphs and memorials are Canadian. While researching the background to our “Milton War Trophy”I asked numerous friends, Legion Comrades and Veterans about our Milton Victoria Park War Trophy. Only one person knew it was of German origin, captured during the Great War (WW1 1914-1919). Specifically, it was captured during the famous period of “Canada’s Hundred Days”, from August 8th to November 11th 1918. This is the incredible story of the capture of that gun by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion on Friday September 27th 1918. Lt. G. V. Laughton, M.C. Bill Smy of the Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group (CEFSG) has written an excellent summary of history of War Trophies in Canada. For further details on that document, please refer to Note 1. The Milton War Trophy was captured by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Canadian Division during “Canada’s Hundred Days” 1. During this period the Canadian Expeditionary Force advanced through the Hindenburg Line to Cambrai, ending the stalemate of “Trench Warfare”. Specifically the Canadians crossed the Canal du Nord and captured Bourlon Wood, and in doing so captured a German Field Gun #9563, Milton’s War Trophy. More pictures of Milton’s War Trophy On-Line The battles that were fought by the Canadians to end the First World War were not inconsequential. As Christie reported 2, the final 100 days of the Great War accounted for one-fifth (20 percent) of all Canadian casualties during the war.

  • 1914 Pte Arthur Bertram Workman Was Born in Minchinhampton In
1914 2Lt Christopher Hal Lawrence was born in Chelsea in 1893. He applied for his commission on the day war was declared, and was gazetted in the 6th Bn Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He went to France on 20 September and was killed in action during the Battle of Aisne on 13 October 1914 in France at the age of 20. He was shot by a sniper. He is remembered on The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial. The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial commemorates 3,740 officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) who fell at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne between the end of August and early October 1914 and have no known graves. The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. Pte Frederick Ellins was born in Minchinhampton in 1894. He was in the 1st Bn Gloucestershire Regt and killed in action on 7th November 1914 in Flanders at the First Battle of Ypres at the age of 20. He is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres. Pte Gilbert Browne was born in London in 1889. He was in the 1st Bn Gloucestershire Regt and died on 9th November 1914 in Flanders at the First Battle of Ypres at the age of 25.

  • Grimes, Ronald
Private Ronald Grimes (Number 22837, 1st and 2nd Battalion, the Royal Warwickshire Regiment) is interred in Douai Communal Cemetery – Grave reference, Joint grave H.29. The records of Ronald Grimes’ military service are sparse. The dates of his enlistment and attestation appear not to have been documented nor does that of the day he joined the British Expeditionary Force on continental Europe. However, the fact that he is not entitled to the 1914-1915 Star implies that while he may have enlisted during the first two years of the Great War, he did not join his unit on active service in the field until the third year of the conflict, 1916. 1 Furthermore, the recorded (in places) service of Private Grimes with both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Warwicks leads one to believe that this was also the order in which he was attached to them. *However, there appears to be little further evidence of Private Grimes serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment. The Forces War Records web-site has him with the 1st. Both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Warwickshire had been ordered to the Continent in 1914. The 1st Battalion had fought in the Retreat from Mons and then in the Race to the Sea, the campaign which ensured the static nature of the Great War for the next few years. It had been stationed in Belgium at the time of the Second Battle of Ypres, then in northern France until 1916 when the British assumed responsibility for the area of the Somme from the French.
