He likes good friends, classical music, reading history and fiction, spending time at the beach, walking his dogs, and tending his mechanical clocks. Keith Birchley Keith’s early life was dominated by classical music and the desire to be a concert pianist. He enrolled in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Queensland in 1975, and for five years his career developed steadily. He won a series of awards, culminating in the prestigious Commonwealth Finals of the ABC competition, playing the A major Piano Competition of Liszt. Over those competition years, he performed with orchestra works by Bartok, Brahms, Beethoven, Liszt, and Grieg. Having auditioned successfully for the Master’s Degree at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, Keith was intending to pursue the life of a performing artist further, studying under a famous Polish teacher. But having become a Christian the year before, and amidst much soul searching, he decided to return to Australia and begin a theology degree at Moore Theological College, Sydney. After four years’ theological study, he served St Pauls Anglican Church, Carlingford as a Lay Minister for almost eight years. Then in 1992 it was back to Brisbane, and the university where he had studied as a music student, but now as a minister to students. Keith was at UQ for over twenty years. For much of that time he was also the Queensland Regional Director of AFES. As well as his responsibilities with AFES, he taught part time at the Queensland Theological College, and in 2013 completed a Master’s dissertation through UQ on the relationship between Karl Barth’s theology of Creation and Providence and the music of Wolfgang Amadeus MoZart. It was entitled, Reading Barth With Mozart in Mind. Since 2015, he and his wife Marion have been CMS missionaries with the Tertiary Students Christian Fellowship in Papua New Guinea. They are thrilled to be back at the ministry coalface again, teaching Christ’s little ones the glories of the bible and being older friends of sinners in a very challenging but exciting land. He is married to Marion (herself a missionary kid) and they have three adult children and one delightful granddaughter. .
