After completing Higher Secondary (1969) from ASVJ Hr. Sec. School, Darya Ganj, New Delhi; Dr. Ashok Kumar obtained his M.B;B.S (1974/75) and M.D. (1978/Feb’79) Degrees in first attempts from Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, India

Consequent upon selection by Union Public Services Commission / GOI in December' 1979, served as Public Health Specialist of Central Health Services (CHS) of Govt. of India (GOI) from April’1980 till August’ 2015.

2. Senior Public Health Specialist (Elimination of Mother to Child of HIV & Syphilis in India), WHO India, 06th February to 05th October’ 2017. And keeping in view the global target of EMTCT by 2020, in close collaboration with National AIDS Control Organization, MOHFW, GOI as well as all concerned partners and stakeholders, actively facilitated & guided the National EMTCT Data Validation & Verification in phase-1 six States of India

3. Inter-national Consultant & Advisor, WHO Geneva and participated in Pre-international Certification Mission for External Evaluation of Guinea-worm Eradication Program in Sudan, 05th – 26th August’ 2016.

4. Consultant UNAIDS and Chairman Writing Group of Experts for developing the National Guidelines of HIV Testing Services (2016) in India at National AIDS Control Organization, MOHFW, GOI, December 2015 – March / April’ 2016.

Facilitated, notably - (i) making TB as Notifiable Disease in India, (ii) banning unreliable ELISA tests for TB diagnosis in India, (iii) nation-wide coverage for early diagnosis and management of multi-drug resistant TB, and (iv) national web based information system "Nikshaya" for online TB registration & reporting, which has been honored with MoCIT and MoARPGR "National e- Governance Gold Award" during 17th National Conference on e-Governance, Kochi, 31st Jan.'14 by hon'ble Governor of Kerala.
