Jeffrey Steenson on this “Deep in History” Pilgrimage to Germany! Day 1: Tuesday 8 September: Depart USA on overnight flight to Luxembourg with transfer in Amsterdam. Day 2: Wednesday 9 September: Arrive in Luxembourg: Arriving in Luxembourg, we transfer to our hotel in Trier, a short drive from the airport. Check-in and enjoy lunch on your own and the afternoon free to unpack and relax or stroll the streets of this beautiful historic city before beginning our pilgrimage with the celebration of the Mass at the Church of Our Lady, pending confirmation. Enjoy a welcome Dinner with the touring team. Overnight in Trier (D) Day 3: Thursday 10 September: Trier: After breakfast, we celebrate Mass at the stunning 13th-century Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche), pending confirmation, Germany’s oldest Gothic church and then enjoy a guided tour of one of Germany’s most beautiful cities, known at one point as the “Rome of the North.” Centered on a market square encircled by historic architecture, Trier boasts no less than eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Porta Nigra gate, Constantine’s throne room, the imperial bathhouses, the Roman Bridge and the amphitheater. Dinner and overnight in Trier. (B, D) Day 4: Friday 11 September: Trier – Fulda: This morning we depart for Fulda, at the heart of Catholic Germany. A lecture on the life of St. Boniface the great "Apostle of Germany" will be given during the bus ride. After checking into our hotel, enjoy lunch and the afternoon on your own before we celebrate Mass at the Baroque Cathedral of Hesse, followed by dinner and overnight in Fulda. (BED) Day 5: Saturday 12 September: Fulda: Today we celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Michael and then enjoy a guided walking tour of this beautiful Catholic city: including the cathedral and the tomb of Boniface, the Benedictine monastery founded by St. Sturmius, a disciple of St. Boniface, wherein the seminary and the diocesan museum are seated, the Franciscan church Of Our Lady at Frauenberg, St. Blasius church, Holy Spirit church, the Castle Garden, and the Church of St. Lioba, which contains the tomb of St. Lioba and beautiful old frescos. Dinner and overnight in Fulda (B|D). Total Cost: $4,499.00 Cash/Ck. Credit card: $4,678.00 Day 6: Sunday 13 September: Eisenach – Erfurt: Drive to Eisenach and celebrate Mass at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.     1 Sara Marcus 12-11-18 From Royalty to Bourgeoisie: Exploring the Altes Museum The Altes Museum or Old Museum was constructed in Berlin between 1824-30 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). Originally known as the “Königliches Museum,” it was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia for the purpose of being the first public art museum in Prussia as well as the first royal museum. As the relationship in the 19th century changed between art, the observer, and who should be a part of that experience, the Altes Museum was erected to embody the idea of Berlin as a center of learning and culture, and to elevate its citizens in the presence of art. The Berlin Museum emerged from a small group of the ruling class and it was first officially demanded and proclaimed by the Art Academy under Friedrich Wilhelm II. Can Bilsel Working Paper #13, Fall 2000 Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies [email protected] (609) 258-5180) The Zeus Altar of Pergamon in Berlin Overshadowed by the debates on the Holocaust Memorial or the fate of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of archaeological collections in Berlin nevertheless poses an international problem. The question is, in a way, analogous to the current sensibilities about the future of memory, as it was called by a recent conference at Princeton University. How will the past will be framed and commemorated in a reunified Germany; what constitutes the cultural heritage of the new Berlin Republic? As Berlin assumes the role of the capital, both official and popular approaches to memory of the recent past gain a vital importance. Curiously, an internationally recognized effort on the part of the federal government to commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime goes hand in hand with a systematic repression of the more recent East German past. As the American-style malls and corporate headquarters of the Postdamer Platz, once the busiest center of Europe, celebrate the victors of the Cold War, the institutions of the East German Republic are being erased from the city. New Berlin will be a city of memory, as evident in its memorials and museums. Yet it will also remain a site of amnesia and forgetting. This paper will discuss Berlin’s contested Zeus Altar and its role as a collectively negotiated construct of memory.

It focuses on the five major museums on Museum Island (Museumsinsel), which were built over a period of 100 years (1830-1930). We will also talk about the newest addition to Museumsinsel, the Humboldt Forum scheduled to open its doors in the reconstructed city palace on Schlossplatz in 2019. Discussions will focus on the nature and social function of museums, as well as their role as places where the image of the state and its civil society are constantly reshaped, and how this has evolved up until the era of global migration. Other topics include museum architecture, exhibition design, visitor studies, audience development, and the museum in the 21st century. Previous knowledge of art history, architecture, or German history is not required, but useful. Course Objective At the end of the term, participants should have gained the ability to view a museum in its social and historical contexts, while using Museum Island as a special point of reference.     GLITTER AND DOOM TRAVEL SEMINAR TO BERLIN “Glitter and Doom: Culture and History in Berlin” is a two-course learning experience combining a 3-credit preparatory course taught on campus in Spring 2012 (TX 201C) and a 1-credit travel seminar in Berlin in May 2012 (TX 202). This seminar explores German history and culture with special attention to the complex interplay between art and politics. After studying on campus, the city of Berlin and the surrounding region will be our classroom for the ten-day travel seminar. OFF-CAMPUS STUDY & EXCHANGES WHY BERLIN? Berlin is a city continually reinventing itself. In its 775-year history, Berlin has been at the center of many of Europe’s major political, social, and artistic developments. This seminar examines Berlin’s turbulent history over the last 400 years and focuses on those moments that exemplify the glitter and doom of the German cultural heritage. Students study the Enlightenment, neo-classical art and architecture, and the rise of Prussian militarism through the life of Frederick the Great. We then explore the construction of a German nation-state through war, art, and Bismarck’s political doctrines. Primary emphasis is on 20th-century Berlin as the site of many of Germany’s greatest artistic accomplishments and its fall into the barbarism of two world wars, two dictatorships, and genocide. We review the roaring 20s by juxtaposing innovations in the arts to the social, economic, and political upheavals. In our study of the Third Reich, we examine Hitler’s monumental architectural visions and the “degenerate art exhibition,” read memoirs of those persecuted, and learn about the topography of terror.
