Decreasing hydrothermalism at Pamukkale- Hierapolis (Anatolia) since the 7th century Bassam Ghaleb1, Claude Hillaire-Marcel1, Mehmet Ozkul2, and Feride Kulali3 1Université du Québec à Montréal, GEOTOP, Montreal, Canada ([email protected]) 2Pamukkale University, Denizli, Turkey 3Uskudar University, Istanbul,Turkey The dating of travertine deposition and groundwater / hydrothermal seepages in relation to late Holocene climatic changes can be achieved using short-lived isotopes of the 238U decay series, as illustrated by the present study of the Pamukkale travertine system, at the northern edge of the Denizli and Baklan graben merging area (see Özkul et al., 2013; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.sedgeo.2013.05.018. The strongly lithified self-built channels and modern pools where analysed for their 238U,234U,230Th, 226Ra, 210Pb and 210Po contents, whereas 238U,234U and 226Ra were measured in modern hydrothermal waters. When corrected for detrital contamination, 230Th-ages of travertine samples range from 1215±80 years, in the oldest self-built hydrothermal channels, to the Present (modern pool carbonate deposits) thus pointing to the inception of the existing huge travertine depositional systems during the very late Holocene, probably following the major Laodikeia earthquate of the early 7th century (cf. Kumsar et al., 2016; DOI 10.1007/s10064-015-0791-0). So far, the available data suggest three major growth phases of the travertine system: an early phase (7th to 8th centuries CE), an intermediate phase (~ 14th century CE) and a modern one, less than one century old.

COĞRAFİ BİLİMLER DERGİSİ CBD 8 (1), 1-26 (2010) World Heritage Sites in Turkey: Current Status and Problems of Conservation and Management Türkiye’deki Dünya Mirası Alanları: Koruma ve yönetimde güncel durum ve sorunlar Mehmet Somuncu ¹ Turgut Yiğit² ¹ Department of Geography, Ankara University, Ankara ²Department of History, Ankara University, Ankara Abstract: Turkey, being signatory of the World Heritage Convention since 1983 has nine natural and cultural World Heritage sites inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List. Out of these, seven heritage sites have cultural while two have both natural and cultural mix features. The World Heritage in Turkey is facing several problems due to poor management and current land use issues like almost of the developing countries. Most problems of these sites are local or based on specific issues while few are in common at all places. In order to ensure effective management and protection of these sites in Turkey, there is a strong need to formulate new management strategies and policies, after determining and analyzing the current status and related issues in these areas. Therefore, a project was conducted during 2007- 08 under title of “Determination of Current Status of the World Heritage Sites in Turkey”. In this project Turkey’s nine World Heritage sites has been thoroughly analyzed according to specific format to find out the current status and associated problems in this concern. Research findings have provided bases to develop effective management policies and strategies for protection of Turkey’s World Heritage in terms of future. • Pamukkale the WhTe Heaven Pamukkale, Meaning "Cotton Castle" in Turkish, Is a Natural Site in Denizli in Southwestern Turkey
Pamukkale The Whte Heaven Pamukkale, meaning "cotton castle" in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli in southwestern Turkey. The area is famous for a carbonate mineral left by the flowing water. It is located in Turkey's Inner Aegean region, in the River Menderes valley, which has a temperate climate for most of the year. Known as Pamukkale or ancient Hierapolis (Holy City), this area has been drawing the weary to its thermal springs since the time of Classical antiquity. The Turkish name refers to the surface of the shimmering, snow- white limestone, shaped over millennia by calcium-rich springs. Dripping slowly down the vast mountainside, mineral-rich waters foam and collect in terraces, spilling over cascades of stalactites into milky pools below. Legend has it that the formations are solidified cotton that giants left out to dry. Tourism is and has been a major industry in the area for thousands of years, due to the attraction of the thermal pools. As recently as the mid-20th century, hotels were built over the ruins of Hierapolis, causing considerable damage. An approach road was built from the valley over the terraces, and motor bikes were allowed to go up and down the slopes. When the area was declared a World Heritage Site, the hotels were demolished and the road removed and replaced with artificial pools. Aside from a small footpath running up the mountain face, the terraces are all currently off-limits, having suffered erosion and water pollution at the feet of tourists. Pamukkale's terraces are made of travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by water from the hot springs.
