LESSON PLAN POLITICAL PARTIES Recommended for Grade 10 Duration: Approximately 60 minutes BACKGROUND INFORMATION Parliamentary Roles: www.ola.org/en/visit-learn/about-ontarios-parliament/ parliamentary-roles LEARNING GOALS This lesson plan is designed to engage students in the political process through participatory activities and a discussion about the various political parties. Students will learn the differences between the major parties of Ontario and how they connect with voters, and gain an understanding of the important elements of partisan politics. INTRODUCTORY DISCUSSION (10 minutes) Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy, founded on the rule of law and respect for rights and freedoms. Ask students which country our system of government is based on. Canada’s parliamentary system stems from the British, or “Westminster,” tradition. Since Canada is a federal state, responsibility for lawmaking is shared among one federal, ten provincial and three territorial governments. Canada shares the same parliamentary system and similar roles as other parliaments in the Commonwealth – countries with historic links to Britain. In our parliament, the Chamber is where our laws are debated and created. There are some important figures who help with this process. Some are partisan and some are non-partisan. What does it mean to be partisan/non-partisan? Who would be voicing their opinions in the Chamber? A helpful analogy is to imagine the Chamber as a game of hockey, where the political parties are the teams playing and the non-partisan roles as the people who make sure the game can happen (ex. referees, announcers, score keepers, etc.) LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO POLITICAL PARTIES 01 EXPLANATION (5 minutes) Political Parties: • A political party is a group of people who share the same political beliefs. -

BYTE seeks to engage young voters in all-candidates forum Event date: October 7th, 5:30-7 Baked Café Free September 23, 2015 WHITEHORSE - For Immediate Release BYTE is seeking to engage young voters in the lead-up to the federal election with an all-candidates forum for youth. The event will take place on October 7th at 5:30pm at Baked Café and targets young voters and young prospective voters aged 18-35. All four Yukon federal candidates—Ryan Leef, Larry Bagnell, Melissa Atkinson, and Frank De Jong—have confirmed that they will attend the event, which will be moderated by BYTE’s Communications Coordinator Kara Johancsik “Young Yukoners are much less likely to vote than older generations,” says Johancsik. “Our goal with this forum is to put youth issues on the federal candidates’ agendas and to educate young people about federal party platforms with respect to issues that affect them.” The event is part of BYTE’s Yukon Youth Want campaign, a non-partisan social media campaign that asks young Yukoners to share youth issues with local politicians. BYTE has been collecting photographs of young people from across the territory holding up their own statement of what Yukon youth want and posting them to the BYTE Facebook page. “We often hear young people talk about housing, job security, student debt, access to education, and healthcare,” says Johancsik. “We plan to bring the issues expressed in the Yukon Youth Want campaign to the all-candidates forum.” The forum will start off with a few questions formulated by BYTE in light of the Yukon Youth Want campaign, and then audience members will get the chance to ask their own questions. -

2017 U of T Women in House Reflection • Name: Ashley-Nicole Harrison • Program: Master’s of Global Affairs • Year: First year • Name of your parliamentary host: Yasmin Ratansi Reflections: (Think about the highlights of your day, lessons learned, any surprises, quotes from your host, what you found most interesting/challenging, etc.) My time spent shadowing MP Yasmin Ratansi on parliament hill can be summed up as hectic, fast- paced, and inspiring. I sat in on a meeting for the Standing Council on Government and Estimates, saw Ms. Ratansi discuss meetings with commissioners from across North and East Africa, and watched question period in the House of Commons. The day was filled with surprising observations and poignant advice, but one aspect resonated the most deeply: the self-doubt that exists among even the most successful women, and their ability to overcome it. The themes of insecurity and self-doubt came up consistently during speeches as well as informal chats with the women in parliament. During a tour of the Supreme Court, Justice Rosalie Abella described her reaction to professional accomplishments as thinking “they want me?” Similarly, Minister Gould intimated that the fear of failure almost stopped her from running for office, while another MP Caesar-Chavannes described a persistent feeling of inadequacy and isolation that she has battled throughout her time in politics. On some level, I take comfort in knowing that women of their intelligence and fortitude struggle with the same feelings of insecurity that I do, but nevertheless manage to live their lives as trailblazers and leaders. When asked how she overcame uncertainty to pursue her goals, Minister Gould replied, “You just do it.” No one provides a better example of this than MP Ratansi, whose directness befits a woman who has built several careers in male-dominated industries. -

Many of its founding members had belonged to groups such as the Socialist Party of Canada, One Big Union, the Socialist Labor Party, the Industrial Workers of the World, and other socialist, Marxist or Labour parties or clubs. The party was founded as the Canadian section of the Comintern, and was thus similar to Communist parties around the world. The party alternated between legality and illegality during the 1920s and 1930s. It was initially illegal, and created the Workers' Party of Canada in 1922 as its public face. -

He contributed to this review and had over the years provided much sought-after insight into election campaign dynamics. Abstract Ontario’s general election on June 7, 2018, brought the Progressive Conservative party to government for the first time in the 21st Century. The PCs’ victory over the incumbent Liberals, however, reached this point despite much turmoil. Months before the election the party faced a crisis when its leader, Patrick Brown, resigned amid a scandal. The PC party hastily organized a leadership election that put Doug Ford at the helm, who then led the party to victory. The following election review traces these steps and looks at some dynamics that contributed to both the PC leadership vote and the overall result of the election. The PC leadership election is analyzed, providing evidence that Ford’s rise may reflect some of the populist sentiment that has gripped other democracies. The analysis then turns to the general election, focusing on media coverage and issue salience, particularly as they relate to the party leaders. Survey data are examined to build some explanatory vote-choice models, which shows that voters in the general election appeared less moved by populism than a desire to punish the Liberals. -

August 16, 2017 From: Mike Schreiner (Leader, Green Party of Ontario) To: Nicole Frigault, Environmental Assessment Specialist Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission By email: [email protected] Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility - Public Commenting Process CEAA Reference number: 80122 Dear Nicole Frigault: I’m deeply concerned with the proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Site in Deep River, Ontario (CEAR Reference # 80122). Citizens, businesses and community groups are concerned that the proposed site is being fast-tracked for approval despite the fact that it does not meet safety standards established by the International Atomic Energy Agency. A number of retired scientists from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) are critical of the plan. Concerns with the plan include an unsuitable location next to wetlands that drain into the Ottawa River and the use of inadequate technology. In addition, the proposal does not meet regulatory requirements with respect to the health and safety of people and the protection of the environment. Some experts have raised concerns that the NSDF proposal fails to fulfill all requirements set out in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act for public consultation and assessment of alternatives. This plan threatens the quality of drinking water for millions of people who live downstream. Government has a responsibility to ensure that people’s health and drinking water are protected. Given the many concerns regarding the NSDF, I urge the CNSC to deny the proposal at this time. I urge you send this proposal back to the drawing board so that our health, water and environment are protected for present and future generations. -
