    Birds of Mount Greylock Mount Greylock State Reservation INFORMATION GUIDE & SIGHTING LIST Birds of Mount Greylock is a two-part document. Part 1 is a basic overview of the variety of bird species found in and around Mount Greylock, where you might encounter them in the Reservation. Part 2 is a birding checklist for your records. Part 1 Managed by the Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), Mount Greylock State Reservation covers over 12,500 acres of upland habitat. The summit at 3,491 feet above sea level is the highest point in Massachusetts and supports the only sub-alpine ecosystem in the state; one of the southernmost extensions of the boreal or spruce-fir forest, normally associated with Canada. Why go birding? If you want a challenge, camaraderie, fun, passion, beauty, insight, travel, and discovery, go birding. All this aside, humans have certainly altered face of the landscape, sometimes negatively impacting bird habitats. Bird populations, over time, have responded by shifting to more suitable habitats or disappearing altogether from certain areas. Still other species have been either hunted to extinction, their distinctive habitats completely destroyed, affected by pesticides or pollution, or even displaced by competing bird species. There is a widely held belief within the bird watching community is that an interest in birds is often the first step toward building a sound conservation ethic. Birds are sensitive indicators of the health of the environment. It is likely that a popular widespread commitment to their well- being will lead to a greater concern for the quality of the environment on which humans and birds are mutually dependent.

Lambert Jr., Commissioner Dear Friends, Supporters, Users and Stakeholders of the DCR Middlesex Fells Reservation; I am please to introduce you to this draft Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Middlesex Fells Reservation. RMPs provide guidelines for management of properties under the stewardship of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). They are intended to be working documents for setting priorities, enabling the DCR to adapt to changing fiscal, social and environmental conditions. The planning process provides a forum for communication and cooperation with park visitors and the surrounding communities to ensure transparency in the DCR’s stewardship efforts. For more than a century, the Middlesex Fells Reservation has provided visitors a natural oasis in the midst of an urbanized landscape, and an opportunity for visitors to connect with nature. The reservation offers a variety of nature-based recreation activities that are special to the residents of metropolitan Boston and beyond. It is home to ten rare plants and animals, uncommon natural communities, and cultural and historic resources that live as a testament to our agrarian and industrial past. Generations of users have traversed its trails, viewed the Boston skyline from atop its rocky hills, and enjoyed the sound of birdsong echoing through the forest. This RMP strives to balance recreational use and demand with the protection natural and cultural resources at the DCR Middlesex Fells so that these experiences, and others, are available for the generations to come.

    July 29, 2019 Somerville Conservation Commission Rachel Borgatti, Chair Dear Ms. Borgatti, We appreciate the opportunity to comment on the Mystic River Pedestrian and Bicycle Crossing. We enthusiastically support this important infrastructure project and commend Encore Boston Harbor and DCR for their efforts to move towards implementation. Mystic River communities have been waiting for over a decade for this connection – we’re grateful to have these partners to turn ideas into reality. The Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Mystic River watershed. This includes working to improve the water quality in the Mystic River and its tributaries and promoting public access through the formation of continuous greenways for recreation and transportation. We believe that these efforts will improve public health, the environment, and economy of Mystic River communities. The proposed pedestrian and bike bridge will provide a much-needed connection between Somerville and Everett, help to complete the 25-mile Mystic Greenways network, connect dozens of North Shore cities with downtown Boston, and close a critical gap in the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway. This bridge will also: - Leverage the state’s investment in the Northern Strand: this bridge will connect residents of Lynn, Saugus, Revere, Malden, and Everett to Somerville, Boston and Cambridge. Without this bridge, the Northern Strand will dead-end at the Mystic River. - Unlock high-capacity transit access to the Orange Line and promote walking and biking, thus reducing automobile trips and vehicular traffic. - Connect Somerville's recently rebuilt Sylvester Baxter Park, planned Draw 7 Park Redesign and the in-progress path along the MBTA seawall to the new parks and paths along Everett’s waterfront.
