In October 2010 on this very page, The Boardwalk Journal was the first to break the news that an individual we called ‘Candidate X’ was emerging as a force to be reckoned with as a possible replacement for Vince Polistina in the State Assembly. It was anticipated that Polistina was going to challenge Jim Whelan for the State Senate seat in November. With Est. 2001 Dan Skeldon-like precision, our forecast was correct. ‘Candidate X’ was soon revealed as local attorney/war hero Chris Brown and the stage was set for a showdown at the Republican Convention between Brown and the always affable Atlantic County Freeholder Frank Formica. Criminal Law Prior to the emergence of ‘Candidate X’, it was considered a lay up that Formica’s name would be on the ballot in November alongside Assemblyman John Amodeo’s. Fast forward to February (Adult & Juvenile) 2011: As the momentum of Brown’s campaign continues to swell – fueled by coverage and State/Federal/Municipal commentary by our friend Harry Hurley, PolitickerNJ.Com, and the support and undeniable strength of the E.H.T. Republican Machine led by Sonny McCullough – Formica graciously bows DWI/Traffic Offenses out, paving the way for Brown to likely coast through the upcoming Republican Convention and gain the party’s nomination. As Chris Brown’s political stock continues to soar, so does Expungements Formica’s as his decision to step aside and avoid what would have been a dividing internecine dog fight at the convention only strengthens the party and Formica’s stock in it. Republican Casino Licensing County Chair Keith Davis has to like his line-up for November, which reads like a political James J. Leonard Jr., Esq. Dream Team and includes Assemblyman John Amodeo, County Executive Dennis Levinson and Immigration Law Sheriff Frank Balles seeking re-election, Polistina seeking Whelan’s Senate seat, and in all likelihood, Chris Brown seeking Polistina’s vacated Assembly seat. So where does that leave Divorce Frank Formica? He’s still the Chairman of the Board of Chosen Freeholders and his name remains in circulation as a possible candidate for either Atlantic City Mayor in 2013 or to Domestic Violence Hearings / run for Senate in two years, should Polistina lose to Whelan. Regardless, you have to admire Restraining Orders the resiliency of the Atlantic County GOP, bouncing back to prominence after Bill Gormley’s Child Support/Child Custody retirement in 2007. For this, you have to credit the aforementioned foursome of Amodeo, Polistina, Davis, and Levinson. Issues Personal Injury Administrative Law Hearings

Atlantic City’s New Tourism District Is A Go In early February, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a legislative package that eases New Jersey’s casino regulations and creates a state- run Tourism District to oversee Atlantic City’s casino zones, , and boardwalk. Which is why, not long after he bought the financially ailing Resorts Casino Hotel, Gomes — considered one of the top casino turn-around artists in the business — brought a touch of old-school ‘Vegas to the Boardwalk. no, he didn’t build an erupting volcano on the Boardwalk, or sink a pirate ship every hour, or turn a posse of topless showgirls loose on a stage. Y instead, he began offering gamers an edible and irresistible bargain: a $2.99 steak dinner. every Sunday through Thursday, guests with a Resorts player card can order a steak dinner in the casino’s Breadsticks Café and Grill for a penny under three bucks, provided they dine between 11 P.M. and 7 A.M. So you’ve got to think that only a handful of night owls are snapping up that deal, right? Think again. “The other night, we had over 300 people in here eating that steak,” Gomes said early last month. That’s just one of the many incentives Gomes is using to lure customers to the “First Game in Town” as he tries to put the casino back on a healthy financial footing after years of operating at a loss. Gomes and his financial partner, former Atlantic City native and real estate mogul Morris Bailey, bought Resorts three months ago for the fire-sale price of just $31.5 million, or roughly 10% of what Sun International paid entertainer Merv Griffin for the same joint 15 years ago. in 2001, Sun sold the casino to Colony Capital LLC for the bargain price of $140 million. Resorts had defaulted on its mortgage two years ago, but Gomes and Bailey threw the property a lifeline when they bought the casino on December 7, 2010. Several weeks later, news leaked out that Resorts was literally hours away from actually closing before Gomes and his team stepped in. today, Gomes, who’s the president and CEO of Resorts, is using all the gaming knowledge and marketing savvy he’s developed over a 40-year career in the casino industry — as both an operator and a regulator — to return the property to profitability. But what many enthusiasts are unaware of is that this classic board game has a vastly colorful history. From secretly helping World War II POWs escape from concentration camps, to influencing pop culture, to being part of numerous world records and trivia – the longest Punderwater game endured over 72 hours and the longest game lasted 70 straight days — the tale of Monopoly has truly been a sordid one. Most people believe Monopoly was invented during the Great Depression by , an unemployed plumber from Philadelphia. According to popular legend, Darrow created a game from scratch about property trading and building which allowed players to live vicariously through the game and become wealthy landowners. Ironically, due to the commercial success of his game, Darrow actually lived this rags to riches story and became a millionaire. however, the genesis of Monopoly actually dates back more than 30 years earlier to a game fashioned by Elizabeth Magie, an activist and inventor from Arden, Delaware. Magie created and patented The Landlord’s Game to promote the single tax philosophy of Henry George, a popular economist of that era. The Sordid

History of While Magie’s game was much more educational in nature — by comparing Magie’s first patent ofThe Landlord’s Game to that of Darrow’s filed 32 years later — it is easy to spot a number of striking similarities. Both games consist of the following: square Monopoly boards containing 40 spaces, with increasing prices as you circle the board clockwise; opposite corners marking “Jail” and “Go to Jail” spaces; and railroads in the center of each side. Magie’s board has a “Mother Earth” starting spot where Darrow’s has “Go,” and Setting the record both have a “Park” space opposite that corner.
