Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: If elected ALA Councilor, I would like to work toward increased cooperation between school librarians and librarians of other disciplines. I have had great relationships with librarians of all types throughout my life, so learning that there was often a disconnect between school libraries and public or academic libraries deeply saddened me. I have made it a personal mission to nurture the cooperative relationships between NCSLMA and other professional library organizations across my state. I would like use this experience to help advocate for cooperation and collaboration of ALL types of librarians in hopes that our profession can learn to reach across the aisles to learn and grow with others to better serve our stakeholders.

Major Accomplishments: Audrey is the Community Engagement and Economic Development Manager at King County Library System in Washington state. She strives to provide community-centered, equitable, and innovative services to adults in a county of over a million residents. For her creative adult programs, Audrey was named a 2013 Library Journal Mover and Shaker. She is the author of the book Adults Just Wanna Have Fun: Programs for Emerging Adults, and she frequently speaks, writes, and teaches on this topic. Within ALA, Audrey has spent one 3-year term as a Councilor-at-Large, where she regularly facilitates Council Forum and live-tweets Council sessions to make them more accessible to anyone who cannot attend in person. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I believe in taking a stand for our shared values. In my first term as Councilor-at-Large, I advocated for policies that increase equity, diversity, and inclusion and defend intellectual freedom in our work and our communities. I listen carefully to understand the context and complexity of each issue, so that I can make a thoughtful decision that upholds the values of our profession.

If re-elected, I aspire to expand these commitments to advocacy and values-driven decisions by participating in Council committees. My primary interests would be ALA budgets and resolutions. Clearly understanding these essential processes can be the foundation for any member to have an impact in ALA; I hope to help make them more accessible to all.

Serving on Council has taught me how to make a difference in my association. I am seeking a second term so I can pay that valuable lesson forward to others.

Major Accomplishments: I basically have been a middle manager, yet in four out of my seven positions, I have spent time in an acting director capacity. Although I prefer middle management, I have taken on important projects in the acting role and have come to understand both middle and upper management. I like to make things happen, so I have tried to accomplish as much as possible in each leadership role I've had. I think this is the reason I was elected to leadership positions soon after being involved in different library organizations. I have had publications come out of four of the ALA division/round table committees on which I've participated. I look back and see the lasting benefits and changes from my organization leadership positions, and I work to leave lasting value from my participation.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I have been an outspoken critic of Council getting involved in issues not related to libraries, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to have a voice in keeping Council productive and focused. My ALA involvement has been through committees, sections, and divisions/round tables. Even my participation on Council has been as the LLAMA Councilor. I have worked in technical services, public services, and library administration in public, academic, and special libraries. When issues have come before Council and I have felt I needed input from those most affected, I have gone to librarians who could give me information on how these decisions would impact their work or their libraries. I want to be sure that all library issues and ALA members, no matter their participation, have a representative in me.

Major Accomplishments: The 2017 TLA Conference, Own Your Profession, was a major success. More than seven thousand attendees enjoyed three hundred plus content programs; dozens of social and health events including a very popular Escape Room, a Ghost Tour of San Antonio, and a Cyclo-Social Bike Ride; an exhibit hall featuring hundreds of vendors; and keynote speakers Cory Doctorow, Carmen Agra Deedy, and Chelsea Clinton. More than eighty classroom teachers were invited to learn more about a library career at our first "Teacher Day @ TLA." The inaugural Big Ideas series, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, presented speakers from outside the library profession including Anita Schjøll Brede (founder of Iris AI) and culture evangelist Donavon Roberson.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Over a nearly 40 year career, my hopes have remained constant: that libraries will continue to be a catalyst for social change, and continue to support and provide freedom of access to information.

Currently, there are very few jobs available for workers without some college education. Libraries offer a second chance to bridge the education gap through programs, readily accessible information, and partnerships with government, local non-profits, Libraries create a demand for higher education, leading to a better-earning workforce, higher profits for business, and potentially, increased funding for libraries.

Ominous developments in the political climate suggest that we need to work harder to prevent the creation of barriers to free access to information, particularly where that access has been funded by public dollars.

Given the increasingly shrill voices in Washington, we need to speak with one voice about the eternal value of libraries, at the federal, state and local levels.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I am interested in further aligning ALA competencies with OCLC competencies and having those mirrored in the curricula of LIS degrees. My doctoral research demonstrates a statistically valid gap between librarian perceptions of preparedness after their degree program to perform the work with which they are confronted everyday.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a candidate for ALA Council, my professional concerns center around the issues our profession faces in protecting Intellectual Freedom, Patron Privacy, and First Amendment rights for all of the communities we, as librarians, serve. I am committed to fighting for the preservation of these freedoms, as well as the promotion of information literacy and universal access. Major Accomplishments: I have been involved in various professional associations including DCLA, ASCLA, and IFLA. I led a group of library students as they redesigned DCLA’s website, was a key player during the merger between ASCLA and FAFLRT, authored two passing resolutions with ALA Council, and co-chaired the Conference Accessibility Taskforce. I coordinated a workshop for international librarians to learn about library services to people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, and am currently the Secretary of the Library Services to Persons with Special Needs Standing Committee in IFLA.

As a Library Associate with DCPL I created a curriculum on basic computer use for older adults who lost their eyesight. Since joining the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Library of Congress as a Reference Librarian, I have authored two dozen reference guides for people with disabilities and am a subject matter expert on assistive technology and web accessibility. I have presented on these subjects at ALA and IFLA and have offered four related webinars to librarians and library school students.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: This is a pivotal time for our profession with many challenges and opportunities. Our membership numbers are diminishing every year as we face questions from within about our Association’s value and questions from outside about our profession’s importance.

I still believe we can answer our members’ concerns by fortifying our support for issues that matter most to us such as intellectual freedom, information literacy to combat misinformation, the library as a space for diverse communities and viewpoints, and a free and open internet. I believe ALA has the responsibility to educate a skeptical public about the importance of libraries and we should be creative in our strategies. As Councilor, my goal will be to help guide the Association to continually face these challenges head-on.

As Council that will be my constant platform should I be elected. Thank you for your consideration.

Major Accomplishments: During my service on the GLBT Executive Board I helped to develop June as GLBT Book Month and worked with ALA to make it an official, recognized annual event. Additionally, I collaborated to develop and produce "Open to All" a toolkit for Libraries serving the GLBT community. I also helped spearhead the development of two new awards (the Newlen-Symons Award for Excellence in Serving the GLBT Community and the GLBTRT Award for Political Activism). I also worked with ALA staff and the ALA President to issue statements regarding discriminatory legislation in Indiana, North Carolina, and Georgia. I was also honored to work with ALA staff to represent the GLBTRT at the memorial for the Pulse nightclub shootings in Orlando. When a book challenge occurred in Hood County, Texas, I represented the GLBTRT in signing a letter supporting the material and urging its retention in the library. I also attended the hearing and gave a statement to the County Commissioners reiterating the importance of intellectual freedom.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Libraries are under pressure more than ever due to budget cuts and competing finding priorities in states and municipalities. This can be seen in the cutting of school Librarians across major cities in the US. As this trend continues the efforts of ALA to support school librarians and promote the importance and relevance of them in a 21st century education needs to continue. The international nature of our economy and libraries cannot be understated. With the continued expansion of digital information and sharing intellectual property rights, especially across international boundaries, needs continued bolstered protection. ALA also needs to continue its hallmark championing of intellectual freedom and free expression through its continued efforts to develop resources for our members and users to meet those challenged. Our communities look to our profession for information, education, entertainment and self-improvement. I’ll strive to continue this effort in all libraries for all people.

Major Accomplishments: Sara Dallas is transforming rural, urban and suburban public libraries and regional library systems in NY. She leads library staff, trustees and volunteers to reimagine libraries as community partners. She facilitates community-based planning, sustainable funding, advocates for new services and resources, and develops partnerships within the region, state and nation. Sara secured a LSTA grant in cooperation with nine New York State Public Library Systems to develop New York Library Trustee Online (www.nylto.org). The Aspen Institute invited Sara to participate in the "Action Guide for Building a Community of Practice" pilot, and in 2011, she became a PLA Trainer for the Planning for Results series. She chaired the PLA National Conference program subcommittee in 2012 (Philadelphia) and served on the national conference program subcommittees for the Denver (2016) and Boston (2006). She serves as chair of the ALA Committee on Professional Ethics and the ALA Sustainable Task Force. Sara takes pride in the programs she has developed and implemented for older adults, the educationally disadvantaged and incarcerated youth and adults.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Libraries are essential institutions in our communities, regardless of type of library or location. They are forums for information and sharing ideas which allow civil discussion, life long learning and provide access to the internet and technology. Libraries are education, employment, entrepreneurship, empowerment and engagement (ALA Libraries Transform). Libraries are facing funding and sustainability issues, the ability to keep the access to information open, net neutrality issues, censorship, privacy and intellectual freedom and ethical issues.

ALA must provide leadership and advocate for our nation’s libraries. ALA must work to keep libraries open for all, throughout the United States. I am proud to be the chair of the ALA Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE), a member of the Freedom to Read Foundation, and continue to work to help rural libraries provide the services their communities need.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a public librarian working in reference and technology services, my career focus has been and always will be upholding the Core Values of Librarianship, the Freedom to Read Statement, the Freedom to View Statement, and of course, the Library Bill of Rights. (Lankes) We are living in an ever-changing society where libraries and librarians are more needed than ever. Libraries and librarians provide important services to their communities ranging from readers advisory, making and creating, technology support, reference, and many unique services beyond our traditional library offerings. I firmly believe in our Library Bill of Rights and our duty to protect our members' intellectual freedom and privacy. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I believe that now more than ever it is important for every one of us to support each other as professionals who continuously advocate for libraries, librarians, freedom of information, and freedom to read, no matter what our individual focus in librarianship is. Council gives us one means to support the organization and our colleagues. Being a councilor for the last several years has given me a clearer understanding of what ALA does for us all and for libraries everywhere. Advocacy, while always imperative, has taken on a new urgency. We need to focus our efforts on being a force for good, especially in the political arena. Council can be a driver in the effort to engage all of our members in the ongoing work of safeguarding intellectual freedoms. I would be honored to be elected as an ALA Councilor at Large.

Major Accomplishments: Starting CreateSpace@MFL, the pop-up makerspace at the Middletown Free Library. I started the space with the help of an LSTA grant and have been able to grow the space through a variety of grants and partnerships. Through these grants I have started a 3D printer lending program that makes 3D printers available to other libraries and schools in the area, currently all three printers are in use at two libraries and an after-school community program. This space has led me on a journey I never thought I would take, leading to the writing of two books, presenting at World Maker Faire and creating some innovative programs that would not have happened without this space.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I am excited for the opportunity to serve as a Councilor-at-large. Libraries can be truly transformative spaces providing people the opportunity to learn, grow and discover. As the leading voice for librarianship, I feel that ALA has a major role to play in shaping the future of the profession not only for librarians, but in how the public views libraries. After some eye-opening experiences this year, I believe that there is much work to do in making libraries safe, inclusive and diverse spaces where everyone feels welcome, not only the public but staff as well. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: To be a leader in the library profession is to constantly work to advance the mission and prevalence of libraries in today’s changing communities, every single day and at every level. In 1970 I was a non-English speaking refugee child who found solace in the library and consolation in the small collection of Spanish language books available at the time. Today, I am the Library Director of that same community library from which I received my first card. This experience is what ignites my passion for the profession as I work to build bridges and connections within, and across, the communities and professional organizations I serve. As a member of ALA Council I would work tirelessly for unity, awareness, representation, and change; with reverence for the history of the organization and enthusiastically contributing to an ALA that represents the diverse voices of its members and the communities served.

That is, the collaboration and advocacy among divisions and roundtables, the leadership of individuals, and the timely discussion of the issues ALA is facing now and in the future. I have been an active member of ALA for well over a decade and I have held increasingly more responsible leadership roles within the divisions where I've found my home within ALA. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I have been involved with my professional organizations since before I had a job. It was instilled into me early in my career the importance of being an active and contributing member to the profession. Running for ALA Council is another opportuntiy for me to give back to a field that has given me so much. I think it is so important to have all kinds of voices represented in council and helping to guide the leadership of our organization. There are so many issues happening in the world that impact our libraries, and I want to be help be a part of the conversations that moves our field and our association forward.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: My professional concerns for 21st century libraries are the equal access to library services and information to low income families and homeless. It’s a challenging and motivating time for libraries when introducing innovative technology. I want to continue my work on ALA council to ensure that the American Library Association continues to uphold its mission of providing library services and resources to the underprivileged and fight for intellectual freedom. I believe this can be achieved through raising awareness of the community’s needs within the librarian community at large. My goal as Councilor, if re-elected, will be to ensure equal access to library services and information. My professional mission is to move libraries into their equitable place in fairness of access in the emergent digital information age.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a librarian in a city high school with a very diverse population, my biggest professional concern is censorship and diversity in library materials. I actively work to ensure that I am sensitive to the many varied voices and interests of my students. I respect the desires of my patrons to see works that reflect their situations and at the same time I endeavor to guard against self-censorship. I believe we need to advocate for more diversity in content and creators of young adult literature. I also feel we need to have more able voices to support school librarians that are outnumbered in their defense of quality literature that makes some uncomfortable.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a candidate for Council, I believe that ALA needs to continune to be a strong advocate for libraries nationally. Funding is essential and unrelenting efforts need to be made to all members of Congress for continued federal funding. Libraries do change lives, but funders need to be reminded of that. This should be an overarching goal of ALA that involves every member. Gaining increased market share and using performance measures that detail organizational results and impact (outcomes) need to be shared. Libraries must be building their capacity, employing new technologies and delivering new products to our customers that are relevant to today's lifestyles. These are critical to all libraries' future. There are plenty of challenges out there for libraries. How we meet them and adapt to our changing world will determine our future! Thank you for your support!

Major Accomplishments: In recognition of my dedication to new librarians, ACRL Press invited me to edit a book for future academic librarians that will be published in 2018. I'm excited to collect practical strategies that will help new and future academic librarians be successful on the job hunt and in their first jobs.

I co-created a Virginia New Members Round Table in 2011, and served as its Chair from 2011-2013. We've hosted dozens of socials around Virginia and increased the number of new members by several hundred. We created a special program track at our annual state conference, and I have gotten wonderful feedback about how much more fun and meaningful both VLA and the conference are now.

None of my library school’s student association benefits were available to distance students, so I founded a Virginia branch for my classmates and coordinated two find-a-job panels, one of which ended up being the most-attended virtual event in UNT SLIS history. Founding this LISSA branch taught me that even library school students can “make it happen.”

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: If re-elected, I would continue to increase understanding of how ALA functions, particularly for library school students and other new members. Services for new librarians/association members have been my passion since I joined the profession: almost the entirety of my professional development work has been devoted to issues concerning new professionals. According to Library Journal, over 5000 students graduate from library school every year, but only a fraction of these join ALA, and those that do join are often confused about what ALA does and aren't aware of the opportunities and services it provides. Continuing to serve as an ALA Councilor-at-Large would give me a platform with which I could both promote the interests of new professionals within the association.

This grant for $353,760.00 provided the funds to develop four Doctoral classes addressing the curriculum doctoral students preparing for district level positions or higher education positions working in the school library area, need to prepare themselves for these positions. The grant also provided 16 doctoral students with mentoring as they progressed through their programs.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: In today's world, we are faced with many challenges in the library and information field. One of these challenges is providing all people with skills to harness information making it their own. This process should begin at birth and continue as we journey through life. Students are involved in K-12 education for many years, and should be transformed as learners during those years. However, today we find that many school districts are eliminating school library positions and replacing school librarians with clerks or volunteers. We need to explore various ways to reinstate school librarians so that they can work with the youth of today. Another challenge we face is working in personal silos. As a profession we need to network, collaborate, and support each other regardless of the type of information organization we work for. It is only together that we can fulfill our roles as information professionals.

Participated in the creation of a building master plan, the design and implementation of a $500,000 student collaboration space, the relocation of several centers, the implementation of a 24/4 study area, and other modifications throughout the building. In 2016, increased library employee participation in the university annual campaign resulting in an 11.5% increase in total dollars pledged by library employees and a 9.3% increase in the number of library employee donors. Championed the RFP and implementation processes for new library services management platform and led the management team throughout both phases. Championed the RFP and implementation processes for a new digital repository platform. Championed the Library Ambassadors program that provides peer- to-peer marketing about library services. Implemented and analyzed the 2014 LibQUAL+ client satisfaction survey. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Serving as an ALA Councilor has provided a perfect way to give back to the profession and organization that has given me so much. As Chapter Relations Chair and former TN Library Association President, I have been a passionate advocate for the work of our state associations/chapters. Through creating a strong bridge between state chapters and ALA, we create a stronger voice to advocate for all libraries and patrons. One of my other passions is mentoring. We must find ways to provide a bridge for new and aspiring librarians to find their voice and a place of service within ALA. New Members Roundtable (NMRT) provided that avenue for me. Support for new professionals starts with providing opportunities for professional development, mentoring, and a seamless path for them to serve, learn and grow in the profession. Making these connections and building these bridges are vital to the future success of ALA.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: In spite of the challenges we face, as a profession, it's an exciting time to be a librarian and an even more exciting time to work in public libraries. Patrons continue to rely on our diverse services and they trust us to provide reliable information. Throughout my 19-year career, I have worked in almost every capacity. I was an integral part in transforming my library’s buildings and service offerings to meet the needs of 21st Century patrons. These transformations have allowed us to successfully met the needs of early technology adopters while balancing the needs of late tech “relinquishers.” I’m optimistic about the profession’s future. If elected, I bring a passion to serve. I’ve always pursued ways to be of service to my library system, my patrons and my staff. I would now like to serve my profession by working alongside fellow councilors to tackle the big issues facing libraries.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a librarian and change agent, I believe there needs to be more dialogues about diversity and inclusion including conferences, trainings, and workshops within the profession and initiatives created locally, regionally, and nationally.

A major push for Hip Hop, Art & Design, and Visual Information Literacy should be evaluated within the profession as a form of scholarship for present and future learning environments. In addition, a national adult literacy program for minorities in academic libraries is a need and standard that should be met.

In like manner, being socially active and an advocate for change, upholding the ethics and standards of our profession to the highest degree. I am passionate about what I do and believe it is my mission to serve the global community as a librarian and continuing to help progressively as a voice of reason in an ever-changing society.

Major Accomplishments: The bulk of my major accomplishments are tied to my career. I was promoted from within my current organization after completing my MLIS. After being promoted, I was more able to be involved in community outreach efforts which led me to being on many local committees and organizations. In addition to recently being named the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce's Oustanding Public Servant of 2017, I was also recently accepted into the MBA program at the University of South Florida.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: The American Library Association is a widely recognized organization and it is the one of strongest voices librarians have during a time in which elected leaders do not necessarily value what libraries stand for. I have great concern when only around 9,000 members vote in the ALA election as it indicates that our membership is not engaged in a process we should all hold dear. I don't want to see ALA go down the way the Canadian Library Association did when it dissolved last year. In order to have a strong ALA, we need a strong Council with strong leaders on board. Being on Council is an opportunity for any single person to volunteer to be a part of an organization every librarian needs to support. We can all do something to make this organization stronger and that is why I am running for Council.

Major Accomplishments: Organizing visits to Pulse Orlando. For ALA 2016 in Orlando, I coordinated group visits to the site of the Pulse Massacre for fellow LIS professionals that wanted to grieve and show solidarity with the community. Visiting Pulse stands as one of the most defining and rewarding moments of my life.

Created a Student Ambassador Program for my campus. Saw a need for student volunteers to assist with campus and library events and New Student Orientation. Reached out to student leaders on campus to gauge their interest. Liaised with Student Services and Admissions to create the Student Ambassador Program, the Student Ambassador Committee and all the documentation that accompanied the program (application, responsibilities, budget allocation and funding plan, etc). Successfully recruited 15 students in first term.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a school librarian, I've seen school libraries lose funding dollars and library positions. Some current federal legislation does not favor libraries or librarians. All librarians must continue to fight for national, state, and local dollars, organizing and/or volunteering in campaigns and programs on all levels. I love libraries and care deeply for all students, staff, parents, and the communities, or families, affected by cuts to programs and positions. I want to fight for all type of libraries and the patrons each serve. I've done this previously and would love the opportunity to do it again. I want the students I serve, and their families to enjoy libraries like I have.

Major Accomplishments: During my time at LLAMA, I initiated the effort to partner with the New Members Round Table resulting in a LLAMA/NMRT Joint Committee, and a Discussion Group. This joint venture offers a chance for the more seasoned members at LLAMA to exhange ideas and experience with the newer members of NMRT.

At Kansas State University, I developed and implemented an Undergraduate Diversity Internship program to introduce underrepresented undergraduate students to librarianship as a career. The program increased the diveristy at the library, helped the university retain and develop high achieving minority students, and played a part in helping our profession recruit more underrepresented members.

At Old Dominion University, I play a critical role in redesigning the organization structure, resulting in a new and more agile framework to move the Libraries forward.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I am invested in ALA, and am proud of the actions that have transpired in which I played both a direct and indirect role since I hopped on the governance train 7 years ago. We are in a transition mode politically, culturally, technologically balancing lightning speed communications with the challengingly maneuverable, large, and complex vessel that is our association. I continue to represent disability librarianship and especially stand up for the rights of current and prospective members within ALA in support of our new strategic direction of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. In addition to immersion in domestic library issues, I am honored to participate in sectors of international librarianship, striving to represent ALA members and policies, sharing ideas across borders. Philosophically, I will fight for decisions to be inclusive, incorporate diversity, accessibility, respect for opinions of others, progressive ideals, and rationality. Major Accomplishments: Designing and building a quality, student-centered library media program and instituting the necessary changes through the years is certainly my greatest accomplishment. To help students thrive academically, socially, and intellectually is a charge I have taken very seriously through the years. Coming to an understanding of library as information source and hub but also as place where the many tasks and endeavors that are necessary for true growth must not only take place but must be encouraged became the bullwark of the libraries mission and function. I cannot imagine a more rewarding job.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Libraries matter now more than ever. While we have been challenged by the brutal mindlessness of our national poltical leaders, we have been bolstered by our united response and clear direction in advancing the importance of libraries in the lives of our communities. ALA is strong and its response has been fleet, well-organized and powerful. We have rallied our users and this process has re- energized us to deliver necessary services now more than ever. I have worked widely in ALA and have the knowledge and commitment to help form and lauch our new initiatives. I will continue to devote my attention to ensuring that our unified message, regardless of type of library, is that libraries are the bedrock of a strong democracy. It is important that school library issues are always a part of the mix in planning for the future and setting our unified priorities for ALA action.

Major Accomplishments: Dr. Mocnik has developed academic leadership skills while serving as a library administrator at private and public universities where he provided budgetary and personnel management, transformational leadership, and participated in the institutional administration. He was elected to serve as chair of the University Senate and the Senate Executive Committee, two major representative leadership bodies of the institution. As a Fulbright Scholar he has merged his library experience with his passion for international collaboration, teaching, and research. This experience resulted in a memorandum of understanding to further student and faculty exchanges and introduce more intentional internationalization efforts. Having earned a doctorate in history and master’s degree in library and information studies, Dr. Mocnik also teaches courses or conducts independent studies to further the research and teaching agendas, support the curriculum, and to keep in touch with students.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Holding the American Library in highest esteem, I want to continue service. As a retired school librarian and a frontline/grassroots public librarian, I continue my commitment and dedication to serve the profession through collaboration with colleagues in school, public, academic, and special libraries. Also, my efforts continue to promote libraries through successful cooperation with members of education, business, and civic organizations on the local, state, and federal levels. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: The ALA needs to become a more vital organization and voice for all libraries and librarians through stronger advocacy. Stories of how libraries are changing and becoming community centered through services to patrons of all ages and backgrounds need to appear in all types of media, blogs, online and print newspapers, featured in magazines and ads. Pending changes should reflect leaders with new vision and willingness to undertake bold initiatives and defend core values of the association. Use of new technologies and communications media should be pervasive on its website, publications and how members work with one other and with ALA staff. Outreach to innovative and forward thinking early career librarians is essential for the future of the organization and the field of librarianship.

Major Accomplishments: Leslie Preddy is a school librarian and Instructional Leadership Editor for School Library Connections magazine. She has served as an adjunct professor for IU, ISU and IUPUI. She has presented webinars for edWeb, Indiana Department of Education, and ALA. She is an education, school library, and makerspace speaker/consultant and has published articles in online and print journals and blogs. Leslie is a past recipient of AASL’s School Library Media Program of the Year award and ALA’s Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming. She is a a 2010 Finalist for Indiana State Teacher of the Year. Her book, SSR with Intervention: A School Library Action Research Project was named one of the Best Professional Books of 2007 by Teacher Librarian and her book, Social Readers: Promoting Reading in the 21st Century, was Highly Recommended by Library Media Connection. Her latest book is School Library Makerspaces and she is a recent recipient of two IMLS grants, administered by the Indiana State Library, for her library makerspace.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: The library profession currently faces many challenges, including the challenge of meeting the diverse needs of our local and global community in a technological society. It is our moral responsibility to guide our patrons toward accessing all types of information and resources and autonomous thinking. When intellectual freedom is jeopardized, when information or resources are withheld, so is a person’s ability to learn and make thorough, thoughtful decisions. All types of libraries within a community are a great strength of a community. A librarian is the cornerstone for developing the most well rounded, literate citizens in a democratic society. We want to grow people who are capable of learning for themselves, thinking for themselves, and communicating their expertise in an effective and productive manner. Libraries play an important role in creating better understanding, thinking, and cooperation within our communities and countries.

We celebrate the 100th anniversary of the library building this year as well as the final bond payment. I am a member of the Long Range Planning Committee of the suffolk Cooperative Library System, and an active participant in local community cultural and educational organizations

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Public libraries are as different from each other as are the communities they serve, but consistent in the goal of providing life long learning and support. We are no longer book repositories; we are a resource for all members of the community: individuals and businesses, babies and teens, seniors and new adults. We all provide a warm welcome for everyone who walks in our door. Education happens in the library every day in subtle and not so subtle ways. It is the responsibility of the community library to provide that opportunity across cultural, ethnic and economic lines. We are a “third place” but for many we are the only place. Library serendipity creates amazing alliances.

Through the voice of ALA we stand against political challenges to net neutrality and access to information. It was a great honor to participate in the Southern California Library Cooperative's delegation for National Library Legislative Day 2017 when we visited Washington D.C. to tell many impactful and transformational library stories and to lobby for library funding and support for all communities not just our own. I am dedicated to serving in the capacity of Library Director at Camarillo, and to have the honor of working on the ALA Council would be a well-considered responsibility and a joy.

Major Accomplishments: During my term as an Emerging Leader, I worked with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) to conduct research about how their state level workshops on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) improved school librarians' understanding of the new legislation. Using internet surveys and phone interviews, we helped determine how well librarians understood the new legislation both before and after the ESSA workshops, discussed roadblocks they faced, discussed how they advocated for themselves locally and at a state level, and elicited suggestions for where and how AASL can provide additional support down the road.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: As a school librarian, it is my goal to bring the voice of school libraries and school librarians to the table. Especially in times of dramatic cuts, school librarians feel underrepresented and overstretched, both locally and nationally. I want to use my voice and my time to help ALA conduct business, enact legislation, and consider member concerns while bringing the experience of school librarianship to the table. In addition, I want to work on a national level to affect change which will make ALA an accessible and welcoming place to librarians of all genders, races, sexual orientations, and religions.

Major Accomplishments: In Michigan, I helped create a community's first library. Much attention was placed on having strong policies which support intellectual freedom and incorporated the principles of the Library Bill of Rights. We had a strong focus on the highest levels of professional service. In Idaho, I have repaired a relationship between the Board and City that was fractured when I arrived. I have initiated and helped complete a long range plan, and helped the Board revise and review every policy. I have presented monthly topics in privacy, ethics, and intellectual freedom the the staff. I am setting the groundwork for a sizable addition to the Library.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I have served three terms as an ALA Councilor. It has been very rewarding. As a Councilor-at-Large, I do not have a specific community to represent, so I have tried to reach out to the membership in general. While I am a public librarian, I appreciate the concerns of all library types, including school and academic libraries. I tweet Council actions from the Council floor at each session. I have based my votes on upholding the principles of professional ethics, intellectual freedom, and privacy. I pledge to continue considering each issue in light of these principles. Rather than pushing a specific agenda, I vow to listen to your concerns and reflect them to the Council at large. I see re-election to Council as a commitment to serve both the profession and those who practice it. I would be honored to have your vote.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Why do I want to be an ALA Councilor-at-Large again? ALA has provided me with many opportunities, and I pursue re-election to ALA Council to give back to the organization. As a previous Councilor-at-large I bring knowledge and experience of the operation of Council. I am also passionate about the value of libraries and their impact. Libraries have evolved into community centers and digital media labs. They are innovative, responsive, and adaptable to the ever changing world culture. I want to help to support and advocate that ALA remains as vital in libraries as libraries are in the customers they serve. ALA should reflect the new age of libraries and the new generation of librarians.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Fighting for, defending, preserving, and promoting Intellectual Freedom is the main reason I've worked in libraries for over 30 years as both a paraprofessional and professional. It is the main reason I became a librarian. I believe that Intellectual Freedom is THE core value of our profession. Serving on a variety of committees has allowed me to become familiar with ALA's bureaucracy and its inner workings. My experience and past committee service has prepared me to be of great value to my colleagues, and my profession as a Councilor-at-Large. If elected, I will work tirelessly to promote our profession's ethics and ideals, and make sure Librarians' voices are heard by all.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Libraries and librarians face many challenges today in offereing access to information to all, regardless of economic status, technological equipment, and physical locale. During this tough time, many libraries have to justify their costs and librarians their importance. My professional path thus far has led me toward promoting information literacy at the college level and advocating that technology platforms be made available to bridge education's digital divide. I would like to use my time on the ALA Council to expand this path beyond educational institutions to public, research, and special libraries.

Major Accomplishments: I co-founded the International Sustainable Library Development Interest Group with a mission to raise awareness of and participation in global sustainable library development projects. We have changed the focus of many major international programs at ALA annual to library development issues. As chair of IRRT I worked with all the IRRT committee chairs to implement the 2007-2010 strategic plan by establishing stakeholders, timelines and milestones. We succeeded in implementing several strategic priorities while I was chair. I chaired the International Reception at the Library of Congress that Librarian of Congress hosted for international librarians during ALA Annual in DC in 2010. At the Library of Congress I developed many Cataloger's Desktop online webinars, tutorials and instructional materials for worldwide users. For the School of Library Science at Catholic University I have taught "Information Literacy and Instructional Design," "Online Information Retrieval" and "Internet Searches and Web Design: Tools and Technologies." In ALA Council I have worked on strategic planning and library instruction and advocacy issues.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: Throughout 2014-2015, I worked on an IRRT ad hoc committee to develop and align international strategic plans to ALA 2015 Strategic Plan. Currently, I am charged with developing implementation initiatives for this strategic plan. If elected to council, I would work on ways to implement the full range of ALA strategic priorities by establishing stakeholders, timelines and targets with realistic milestones.

As an area specialist librarian, I am concerned about the scarcity of resources allocated to libraries in communities with underserved populations both here and abroad, especially refugees. If elected to council I would raise awareness of library development issues both in local communities as well as globally and develop grass roots advocacy strategies to bring pressure to bear on decision makers as library budgets are under duress.

I am also concerned about ongoing professional development for librarians and opportunities for minority students to enter the profession.

Major Accomplishments: I have been a librarian for almost 40 years and an active member of ALA for over 35 years. One of my greatest passions is advocating for libraries, connecting people and information on a local and global level. I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities to channel this passion as a member of many ALA and divisional boards and committees, in presentations at national and international conferences, and in articles and books.

I consider my greatest contribution to the profession to be my advocacy for diversity in libraries and librarianship. I have worked tirelessly to show the importance of diversity to libraries and to help make the profession more inclusive—and thus successful. I have also worked hard to keep libraries relevant.

Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: If elected I will continue to represent the views and issues of concern to my colleagues in terms of equity, diversity, and inclusion, member engagement, and advocating the importance of libraries to elected officials, on campuses, in schools, in communities served by public libraries. Statement of Professional Concerns/Aspirations if Elected: I’ve been a librarian and member of the ALA since late in the 1980s, switching careers from journalism to libraries. I’ve been solo as a librarian all of that time, whether for the good or for the bad, first in an engineering library and then in medical one. I’ve enjoyed being solo because I have learned a lot - about myself and the profession - and I have done things professionally that are wacky and infuriating both… and everything betwixt and between. It is good therefore to have a place like ALA to find grounding and commonality in vision and purpose, and to see the broad scope in aspects, interests, and functions of the profession. That’s what I would like to insure the association continues to be - a voice articulating commonality in purposefulness and future but one also stimulating curiosity in scope, venues, and applications.
