2016 ARTS TRIP > A Vibrant Learning Experience

On Friday 8 July, a group of 20 Gleeson College Arts students and three teachers took the early flight to Melbourne and embarked on a four-day Arts Immersion Tour. The tour consisted of participating in a number of workshops and attending various performances at some of Melbourne’s most magical theatres! On our first day, the Performing Arts students either explored the city of Melbourne or went to the Melbourne Zoo (where Matilda Comley had a close encounter with a Lemur!), while the Visual Art/Design students attended a workshop to further their learning on the past 200 years of fashion design. Saturday morning’s itinerary included am amazing NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts) workshop for the Performing Arts students, while Visual Art/Design students explored the visual art for the day. That evening, students had the choice of watching a performance by Circus Oz under the big top, or attending ‘The Sound of Music’ at the majestic Regent Theatre. Both performances were fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all. On Sunday, the Performing Arts students attended a Circus Oz workshop which included juggling, acrobatics and trapeze artistry. The Visual Arts/Design students went along to the Crows vs Carlton AFL match at the Melbourne Ground (MCG) and then we all met back together in the evening to watch ‘Matilda’ the Musical. It was an astounding performance, full of laughs and hilarity (thanks to the comic and musical genius of Tim Minchin) and even a few tears. ...Continued on Page 3

Members of the Gleeson STEM Society travelled to the University of South Australia Mawson Lakes Campus to learn about Aviation on Tuesday 5 July. The day was broken up in a similar structure to that of an Aviation university student schedule, the morning spent with University Instructor Nathaniel Scherer. Nathaniel ran through the science of how planes fly and the four main components of lift, weight, drag and thrust. Once the group had shown their understanding, the first set of hands-on activities involved students using things that the group could find at home to further explore the concept of high and low pressures. After showing Nathaniel what they had learnt through practical activities, the group made the short walk across campus to the pilot’s training simulators. Along the way they passed the world’s largest bicycle, which can be found in the Guinness Book of World Records! The simulator labs enabled students an opportunity to try their skills of the basics in a small single engine aircraft, before being set some bigger challenges to really show the ‘high flyers’ of the group. After a long morning session, the group was famished, and were treated to a complimentary meal from the Uni cafeteria. Large quantities of burgers, chips and hot dogs were consumed! With energy to burn the group finished the day off at Parafield Airport where they were able to go out onto the tarmac and participate in a pre-flight check of the control surfaces and propellers. Students also ventured into the mechanic’s hanger and saw the inside of a plane’s engine. The day seemed to ‘fly by’ and before we knew it we were heading back to school. The members of the STEM Society learnt a lot about what it takes to be a pilot and the science behind what allows a plane to fly. The group would like to thank Nathaniel Scherer (University of South of Australia) for giving up his day to spend with us, as well as Miss Anastasia Toumpas for volunteering to join to group on the excursion. The STEM Society has shown great participation, enthusiasm and engagement in Semester 1 this year, so it is with great sadness that Mrs Morgante and myself are leaving the leadership group of STEM Society, being replaced by Mr Richard Sellers. We both hope to see the group thriving to learn more in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics while knowing they are in capable hands.

Mr Daniel Ryall, Gleeson College STEM Society OPEN GIRLS INDOOR SOCCER > State Finals Series @ MARS Stadium

The Gleeson Open Girls contested the SSSSA Indoor Soccer State Finals at MARS Stadium on Thursday 7 July (Term 2, Week 10). The girls were greatly lead by Miss Lisa Feleppa and GC Old Scholar Maggie Fitzharris, with assistance and mentoring from Year 12 and Adelaide United FC Lady Reds footballer Grace Abbey (12 DSSAL). This allowed a strong, unified Gleeson team take to the court in what was a very challenging finals series. The girls fought hard and played some fantastic Indoor Soccer, however unfortunately lost one game in their pool. The girls then played off against a strong Underdale HS outfit, and having conceded a few injuries throughout the day, their confidence was down and this came through on the court. Underdale were too strong at the final whistle which saw us miss out on a spot in the Grand Final (a goal difference on ladder). This was a fantastic achievement to have reached the State Finals series and I wish all the girls the best of luck for their Round 2 Knockout Soccer (outdoor) clash against St Francis De Sales College at Gleeson next Thursday 4 August. Thank you to Miss Feleppa, Maggie and Grace for all their work coaching our Open Girls Soccer Teams and well done to all the girls for representing Gleeson College with pride.

Ms Rachel Staffin, Sports Development Coordinator OPEN BOYS INDOOR SOCCER > SSSSA State Runners Up in Admirable Finish

The Open Boys Indoor Soccer Team put in a gallant performance to finish Runners Up in the State Finals of the SSSSA Competition held at MARS Stadium on Wednesday 6 July. The boys started the day strongly with clinical performances in the pool stage of the finals with comprehensive wins against Adelaide High School (4-0) Edward John Eyre High School (15-0) and Underdale High School (8-1). It was particularly pleasing to get such a comprehensive win against last year’s champions (Underdale) in the final pool clash. The Semi-Final saw us facing Cardijn College and it was to prove a physical and tight affair. The game saw us down early in the first half, but to the boys credit we were able to wrestle the momentum back and gain the upper-hand, winning the game (6-4) and progressing to the Grand Final. In the Grand Final we faced a strong Craigmore High School and the game was to prove a tough encounter. The match ebbed and flowed and we were unable to gain momentum for long enough periods of the game to make an impact. We worked hard and played well but the result was not to go our way, as we went down 3-5 at the final whistle. All the boys put in great performances and the team of Daniel Ditroia, Elson Carosi, Liam Gill, Josef Shyti, Johnny Librino, Connor McLaughlin, Declan Sutherland, Carlo Onorato and Jordan Piles can be proud of their efforts throughout the day. Daniel Ditroia was particularly impressive scoring 13 goals in five games, whilst Elson Carosi and Connor McLaughlin were able to each find the net on eight occasions. The boys have now qualified for the Open Boys Indoor Interstate Challenge which will occur later this term. Well done to all players for representing Gleeson College so admirably.

We took on Blackfriars in Round 9 of the Twilight Soccer League in the last week of Term 2, and the boys were keen to retake top spot with a win. The team was going to be tested physically after competing all day at the Open Knockout Indoor State Finals at MARS, before taking to the outdoor pitch for the Twilight match! We started slowly and were ambushed by a fast starting Blackfriars unit who quickly took the lead out to 4-0, our boys appearing understandably flat during the first half. Gleeson College P&F Committee presents... However, much to the boys’ credit, they approached the second half with a totally different mind-set and we were positive, determined and attacking from the outset. An extraordinary half QUIZ NIGHT 16 was to follow in which the boys played some outstanding attacking football to Saturday 20 August 2016 put six goals past Blackfriars, and see us eventually win the hard-fought 6.30pm for a 7pm start game 6-4! The dynamic Jack Ward (12 MSRYA) was able to rise highest on two occasions to beat the keeper with his head and take his TSL $10 goals tally to five this season! PER ADULT Connor McLaughlin (11 DSVAU) was also able to beat the goalkeeper on two more occasions, firstly playing a bouncing ball over the keeper into the net and then he was able to round the $5 keeper before finishing into an open PER STUDENT net for his second to seal the win. Luke Miller was able to add two assists to his two goals in a stand-out second half performance.
