LMSRF ADAPTIVE SAILING – UPDATES AND BOATS FOR SALE by Mike Stapleton, LMSRF Adaptive Sailing Committee Chair Mark Your Calendar : Saturday, April 26th, 2014 10:00 AM4:00 PM, US Sailing’s 2014 Spring Great Lakes Regional Symposium, Hosted by: SEAS: Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. A portion of the agenda is being dedicated to the topic of Adaptive Sailing See flyer on page 33 of this issue.

If you or your organization has an interest in growing adaptive sailing this would be a great way to get started. Everyone is invited.

Chairperson Needed : Although I have been chairperson of this new Adaptive Sailing Committee for only a short time, I need to turn over the baton to someone else willing to take on the worthwhile cause. Like most of you I have become overwhelmed with personal, business and other volunteer activities that need attention including the implementation of our new SailAnyWay chapter in Sturgeon Bay. Anyone that would be interested in chairing the Adaptive Sailing committee for the LMSRF please contact me ([email protected] ) or Commodore Glenn McCarthy ([email protected] ).

SailAnyWay Adds 2nd Adaptive Venue : We are excited to announce that last fall, with the help of LMSRF and a local foundation, SailAnyWay was able to purchase a Cape Dory Typhoon. This larger boat will allow us to add a second sailing venue, the Sturgeon Bay shipping channel, to our venues. Sturgeon Bay offers a much larger base of potential volunteers, is closer to Green Bay (where our sailors come from) and it will allow our sailors to compete in weekly races and special regattas via the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. Slip space has been donated to us by Skipper Buds and we are installing a “sailor lift” (Hoyer type lift) on their docks. The reason we had not sailed here earlier is “weeds”. Lots of ‘em. There are two other Cape Dorys in the Sturgeon Bay fleet that have proven to beat the weeds. We are excited about this new venue and welcome any of you visiting Door County to come join us any Thursday evening for racing. Contact me if you will be in the area and we will get you on one of our adaptive boats.

Adaptive Boats for Sale : Our fleet of three Access Liberty sailboats have served us well for two years. With the addition of our Sturgeon Bay chapter we are planning to modify our Egg Harbor fleet as well. If anyone knows of a Cape Dory or Ensign available at no (or very low cost) please contact me. Either of these two boats are very adaptable, roomy, stable and will sail well in our Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay venues. That being said, we will be selling our three Access Libertys. The boats are designed specifically for adaptive sailing and one is equipped with full servo (motor operated steering and sail trim). We have sailed over 20 people with disabilities, including two quadriplegic that could sail . The boats are ideal for a location where they can remain in the water for the full season or dry sailed via deep ramps or lifts. They are not suited to shallow water, weeds or shallow launches. If interested please contact me, Mike Stapleton. The fleet of three boats is available for a total of $10,000, including a makeshift trailer for winter storage. We may consider a trade for a weedshedding keelboat(s) such as a Cape Dory or Ensign. The Access Dinghy manufacturer has recently announced they now have a distributor in the U.S. and plan to grow their fleet in the States. New boats run about $10,000 each.

Enjoy the upcoming (if it ever comes) sailing season. Looking forward to seeing you in Sheboygan on April 26.

YOUTH LEARNING TO SAIL by Gail M. Turluck There's a great blog available through the ChicagoNow blog that has an article about youth sailing school programs available all around Lake Michigan for this coming summer.

If your kids (grandkids, niece or nephew, or neighbor) complain about being bored after the second day of summer break, maybe going to a sailing school will be the thing that gets them excited about something new and they can learn a skill that can be used for a lifetime!

Don't delay, some programs are sold out already! (And, yes, we are encouraging those programs to find creative ways to expand their offerings so we can have even more new sailors get going.) Surf on over to: http://www.chicagonow.com/saillakemichigan/2014/03/juniorsailingschoolsversion20/ .

MAN OVERBOARD IN COLD WATER by Capt. Jack McClurkin With the ice cover on Lake Michigan this winter, sailors this year will experience cold water sailing well into summer. It is likely that surface water temperatures will be in the 40’s and 50’s in May and June. Although the air might be warm, the cold water is dangerous to the human body. For a study of the effect of cold water, a professor had some subjects jump into 45 degree water and attempt to swim just 30 feet. Example of Survival Suit. Photo courtesy: www.setsail.com. Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation3 April 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter

None made it. Fortunately, they were accompanied by a trained Coast Guard swimmer in a dry suit. All subjects survived.

Here is what happens when the body is immersed in cold water. Within two minutes of immersion, an involuntary gasp reflex occurs. If the head is not above water when the gasp reflex occurs, there is the possibility that the person will not resurface. You may have read reports where a person went into the water and never resurfaced. Now you know one reason why this can occur.

From 2 to 10 minutes after cold water immersion, the involuntary part of the brain begins to realize that it is a bit too chilly. The body’s core temperature begins to drop. Then the brain acts to protect the organs by diverting blood away from the muscles. As a result, the muscles quit working. The arms and legs stop moving and won’t keep the person in the water afloat. You may have read reports of someone in the water who suddenly went underwater and never resurfaced. Now you know why. It doesn’t matter that you consider yourself to be an Olympicclass swimmer, the muscles stop working.

From 30 minutes to four hours after immersion, hypothermia sets in.

The first 10 minutes after immersion are critical for a person in cold water without floatation. If you are sailing under spinnaker on a screaming reach, it may well take all of those precious 10 minutes to return to the place where the person went overboard. Here are some simple safety steps that sailors can take during cold water sailing to improve the survival chances of a person immersed in cold water:

1. Insist that all crew wear lifejackets at all times. No exceptions. Don lifejackets on the dock before boarding, and keep them on during the entire voyage. If a lifejacket is uncomfortable to wear, buy one that is comfortable. A stowed lifejacket is nearly useless. But when worn it can be very useful to keep the head out of the water during the gasp reflex, and to stay afloat when the muscles stop working, significantly improving survivability.

2. Before you leave the dock for the first time, make sure that all safety gear is on board. This includes the delivery trip from the yard to the summer dock. A ring buoy, man overboard pole, radio, or Life Sling won’t do much good if you need it and it is still in storage.

3. On the first sail of the season practice a man overboard drill not just a fender fetch. Practice as if the person in the water won’t be able to climb a swim ladder, and may not be able to attach the sling. Your drill needs to retrieve the fender with the Life Sling or harness and raise it onboard with a hoist or halyard. Repeat the drill when new crew members are aboard or at least monthly. If you arrive at the starting area of a race early, do a practice drill.

4. Know how to use the radio to call emergency services. In some areas 911 operators want to enter a street address to direct landbased emergency crews. This could be a problem if you are on the water and there isn’t an address in their database for the closest dock. Know the procedure in your area. A loss of core body temperature of only a few degrees is serious. Have the person who was immersed checked out by medical personnel.

5. Have all crew wear lifejackets at all times. Oh, am I repeating myself?

WHERE DO YOUR DUES GO? by Michael Hettel, LMSRF Treasurer We had an inquiry recently asking, “Were do my dues go?” We felt that was a fair question deserving a thorough response, so, here's the answer.

Before getting started, please know that Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation is a nonprofit charitable organization that supports sailboat racing activities and education on Lake Michigan. LMSRF's mission is to provide racing rules and race management education to clubs and individuals that complements, encourages, and supports sailboat racing on Lake Michigan. As a not forprofit, we work to keep dues equal to a breakeven position on an annual basis; in other words, ending the year with expenses matching income, as a surplus is not considered ideal according IRS rules. Lastly, realize that your dues are 100% tax deductible.

Now, on with the explanation of what membership dues fund. LMSRF receives annual dues income of approximately $17,000 of which 85% goes to pay for the back office that handles the creation, writing, editing and distribution of 12 monthly newsletters (that are drawing rave reviews, by the way), managing Yacht Club, Individual and Corporate memberships and the recording thereof, handles phone calls and email inquiries, attends all Board Meetings, Lake Michigan Sailing Hall of Fame presentations, handles entries for the Best on Lake Michigan Offshore Fleet and Team Championships, confirms membership of Area III racers, is expanding LMSRF’s role by securing Corporate Sponsors of LMSRF, does blast emailings, updates the website, guides LMSRF’s Social Media presence, has signed up for endless sailing newsletters to cherry pick the news that is key to Lake Michigan sailors, is developing the “Teaching Publicity” module so member clubs can get their events published locally and nationally, and is “politically connected” to many leaders in the sport nationwide.

The remaining 15% is split up to cover trophies for the Best on Lake Michigan Offshore and LMSRF Youth Championships, Lake Michigan Sailing Hall of Fame awards, insurance, tax return preparation, dues to US Sailing and the Union of the Great Lakes, and website registration.

The LMSRF organization is comprised of a large group of volunteers http://lmsrf.org/lmsrf/index.php/contactus around all of Lake Michigan who collectively work thousands of hours annually at no cost, cooperating with clubs, fleets, and other race organizing entities to make sailboat racing what it is all around Lake Michigan. So from a value perspective, how does one assign a price to that?

2014 LMSRF YACHT CLUB DUES ARE DUE Does your Lake Michigan area yacht club or sailing organization's leadership know that if it joins US Sailing its US Sailing membership fee is deeply discounted by also joining LMSRF? What else should your yacht club or sailing organization know about what it gains by becoming an LMSRF member? Click on this link to open our "yacht club" membership brochure ( http://lmsrf.org/lmsrf/index.php/join/why ).

Then, with all that fresh knowledge, share it with your club's Board and lead them to complete your organization membership application: http://tinyurl.com/LMSRFYCAp

Community sponsored, school affiliated organizations and incorporated youth programs may join at the Associate level.

Please clearly indicate who your club’s LMSRF representative is for 2014, if it is not the Commodore, so we know who to notify about the Annual Meeting and other urgent sail racing matters.

All yacht club and sailing organization members will be listed on the LMSRF web site at www.lmsrf.org>Area. LMSRF's membership year is January 1December 31. Thank you for your support!

S.S. BADGER by Glenn McCarthy As the only coalfired steamship in operation in the United States, the S.S. Badger has been under attack by the Environmental Protection Agency for a number of years. The Badger burns 55 tons of coal a day (500 tons per season), which converts into 4 tons of coal ash daily, which is dumped overboard. In that ash there is a small amount of mercury, lead, arsenic and other heavy metals.

A settlement last year between the S.S. Badger and the EPA states that the S.S. Badger is to install sophisticated combustion controls and an ash retention system onboard beginning in 2014. The S.S. Badger is planning for their waste to be greatly reduced this year. The coal ash will be offloaded in Ludington, Michigan and sent to a licensed hazardous waste disposal facility. S.S. Badger departing from Ludington, Michigan. Photo courtesy: www.ssbadger.com. Soon the S.S. Badger will be sharing more information on the upgrades to their vessel. It’s beginning to sound likely that the S.S. Badger will continue ferry operations between Ludington, Michigan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin in the future.

I’d hate to see that boat disappear. It is always fun to see on my trips up and down Lake Michigan.

BUILDING THE MIGHTY MAC by Glenn McCarthy US Sailing Past President Jim Muldoon was a laborer who helped build the Mackinac Bridge. We are fortunate that thought was given to documenting the colossal, multiyear process of creating this important transportation link. Here’s a couple videos of its construction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFsy_EHWMQ Mackinac Bridge being built. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TQWvQS94ms . Photo courtesy: mightymac.org.

MACKINAC RACES, WHO’DA THUNK THIS COULD HAPPEN? by Glenn McCarthy There is an oil pipeline that was installed in 1953 that runs from the Upper Peninsula, across the Mackinac Straits of Michigan, not far from Mackinac Island, to the Lower Peninsula, running toward Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. While it’s not too often these oil pipelines that crisscross the U.S. rupture, when they do, it is a mess, with major closures to contain the spread of the oil.

What kind of potential is there for a pipeline rupture to affect racers to Mackinac Island? If it ever were to happen, I didn’t suggest it, here’s the article by who said it first: http://news.yahoo.com/sunkengreatlakesoilpipelineraisesspillfears 151240567.html .

2014 US SAILING LEADERSHIP FOR UM IN SAN DIEGO – PART II by Glenn McCarthy IF YOU WANT TO PRESS A BUTTON AND GO, BUY A POWERBOAT

Not having been much of a writer in life, the past two years has been an intere sting journey for me . Each day it becomes much clearer that we can’t press one button and the problems of shri nking sailing fleets disappear . It is clear that many need to press a button, flip a switch, spin a wheel, turn a knob, click their heels three times, and then there could be some traction in making change to grow sailing. One fix doesn’t fix it. You need at least two if not three fixes simultaneously to make sailing grow. It isn’t simple, but it’s not all that hard either.

This is the second month in a row reviewing the videos from the Leadership Forum in San Diego in January . LMSRF is looking for reasonable, comprehensive solutions to growing sailing.

Classes, Fleets: How to Grow Them, How to Keep Them Strong. David Sprague http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khvjD4kqqq4&index=25&list=PL1haIIzm5I7aVfeS0D wLNNFp6I6RRqGh 1:03:36 Slides: http://sailingleadership.org/wp content/uploads/presentations/SLF 2014/regatta racing/Saturday/Classes%20and%20Fleets%20SLF_powerpoint%20Final.pdf

GM Summary on Video Presentation Sprague opened by talking about C lass organization, considering the big picture. Work to define your Class in a 30second elevator pitch, who is your target market, what is good about your boat, what is not so good, who probably wants to sail it, why do they want to sail it, and why your Class versus whatever else is out t here now should be chosen.

The n he went into fleet organization. P reach the Class' strengths , reinforce it to the fleet, identify disciples in the fleet, sell it to prospective sailors, make it your fleet's mantra, do things that reinforce the Class and the fleet , make sure fleets are where the action is, fleets are where the fun is, fleets are m ade up of sparkplugs and others. A fleet needs a mix/balance of people: sparkplugs; disciples; participants . What brings them out: fun; competition; being amongst friends; meeting new people; being part of a meaningful team. Fun – how do we make it happen: schedule events , races and socials; balance what most want to do by discovering with a survey; do different things; target rich environment; let the weaker teams win/improve; educa te; signature events; set goals. Target where to find people: sailors who are friends; sailing schools; other fleets; friends; coworkers; family; neighbors; bars; open house.

GM Conclusion Sprague defined that the world has changed and not as many people race every single weekend throughout the summer, and spoke very much about the rudimentary basic breakdown of the components of Classes and Fleets. When he define d “fun,” I was shocked as what he described was much of the what I call “back office work.” Set u p the race. Set up the social. Survey people to find what they want (don’t all survey’s lead the direction, not get what people actually want to say?). Do different things (this has strong possibilities, the old rut we have been doing has become, well….. old). Fun —let the weaker teams win? I couldn’t get that at all. I would much prefer going to longer distances in racing where the weaker team catches a shift by themselves and propels them into winning. Education is fun? So are root canals. Put toget her signature events? It all depends who is in charge, if they follow the stamp of every other event out there, it will be like every other event out there. If the person wants to make it different with tons of weird, crazy fun activities, then there is an expectation of something different. How can you “set goals” and call that fun? You’re in the entertainment business, audiences don’t go back to the same movie 150 times. Why? They want something new. Do things different on the water, send fleets a round islands or government buoys that take them to different scenery. For too long every sailor and every fleet has looked

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation 8 April 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter to steal other sailors from other fleets. This creates a net zero for sailing, and possibly a negative number. Existing fleets get angry when one of their own is picked off, many times that boat is sold to a different fleet away from their area, which is a negative outcome. I would love to ban the method of growing one fleet on the backs of other fleets. There’s millions out there who don’t sail, figure out how to get new sailors into the sport.

Adult Learn to Sail Programs: Attracting New Students. Tom Hubbell, Richard Jepsen, Sarah Hannon, Mette Segerblom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h0w4NTewbc&index=24&list=PL1haIIzm5I7aVfeS0DwLNN Fp6I6RRqGh 1:11:16 Slides: http://sailingleadership.org/wpcontent/uploads/presentations/SLF2014/developing programs/Saturday/Adult%20LTS%20Programs.pdf

GM Summary on Video Presentation They didn’t get the microphone keyed to the camera, it was difficult to hear. Looking at the slides instead, of which there are 2, that doesn’t help either.

GM Conclusion Too bad, hearing how others are attracting nonsailors to sailing would have been cool.

Bringing the Bottom Up: 20 Coaching Strategies for Larger Fleets. Tom Hubbell, Mike Ingham http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XJ08W1yMgE&index=27&list=PL1haIIzm5I7aVfeS0DwLNN Fp6I6RRqGh 58:33 Slides: http://sailingleadership.org/wpcontent/uploads/presentations/SLF2014/grow sport/Saturday/SLF%20US%20Sailing%202014CoachTCA.pdf

GM Summary on Video Presentation The Class developed an event seminar that includes a number of components. Match newbies with veterans to bring the newbies up to speed quicker. Use seminars, coaches, video onboard, have experts talk before the race and after the race and/or a heavy weight guest to debrief the day. Switch skipper and crew on the helm. Score as teams, use fleet rules, score as golf handicap, require neophyte crew, crew university, short course and drills preregatta, coaching ashore, coach in the boat, postrace debrief roundtable, Kattack, prepare seminars on basic sailing for those who struggle and mate them with high level coaching, bringing new and young up to speed quicker keeps them around longer, respect for competitors and the rules, do a weather talk, have a social, encourage all participants to come to the social, charge for it as people respect it more, their program is focused on adult to adult learning, selection of coaches and speakers. The last 25 minutes were microquestions, not germane to the concept of the big topic.

GM Conclusion – No doubt coaching for all sailors improves their skills as in any other sport. Finding volunteers to do chalk talks is always easy. Putting together these seminars is a good thing to hold your fleet and bring new sailors up to speed. But I must digress, the focus on their talk was all on adults. There was no suggestion as to what is needed to bring the youth in with adults. They mentioned the word “fun” and spent no time breaking that word down into what actions are actually “fun.” Fun was an afterthought.

Stepping back and thinking about their whole talk, I think the exact same talk and seminar would be given to young Olympic hopefuls. It was all about Faster – Higher – Stronger. This is the method US Sailing has been professing for years, not just to Olympians, but to every recreational sailor. As a result, recreational sailing continues to shrink with this business model by making it all about winning, and not spending any time on assuring there is something for those who don’t win, called “fun.”

NEW ACRONYMS FOR YOU TO LEARN: STEM & REACH by Glenn McCarthy In a variety of sailing articles recently, I keep seeing these acronyms pop up, with no explanation of what they are, like we should automatically know what they are.

STEM is an acronym referring to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These fields are expected to grow in the future, and are considered a strong segment of the U.S. economic engine. STEM programming is being developed to encourage more kids to become nerds, and great nerds at that (I are one I hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering).

US Sailing developed its STEM program which they call “REACH,” funded by real estate executive John Kilroy. The idea is to break down the actions on sailboats into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical studies. We all know there are lots of forces that accumulate that cause a boat go through the water. The study of those different components is what "STEM" is.

So, put STEM and REACH into your vocabulary. For more details http://reach.ussailing.org/ .

Oakley is an investment vehicle founded by UK businessman and sailing enthusiast Peter Dubens. Utilizing their collective experience, Dubens and his partners make investments in companies to support their brand development and growth.

"We are delighted to be backing North Technology Group and an iconic brand like North Sails," said Dubens. "This investment further demonstrates Oakley's appetite to work with successful entrepreneurially led businesses. We are hugely excited by the potential of North Sails and look forward to working with the management team in the next stage of its evolution."

The largest company by revenues within NTG is North Sails, holding the patent for 3Di, a unique composite construction process that produces high performance sails approaching the shape holding of a rigid foil. The acquisition will further align North Sails with other NTG compani es, specifically Southern Spars. Completing the transaction results in the ability to better share resources and technology between the two brands. "North Sails and Southern Spars have been working together for years on various projects from the America's Cup to the new J/e70," said North Sails President Ken Read. 2014 HOOK RACE by Scott Lewis, 2014 Hook Race Chair 2014 Marks the 31st consecutive running of the Racine, Wisconsin, Yacht Club HOOK race, making it our 30th anniversary. The HOOK will start outside the Racine Harbor on Saturday, July 19, 2014, and continue up the western shore of Lake Michigan through Death's Door between Door County and Washington Island, and end in Menominee, Michigan at the M&M Yacht Club. This year, for the first time, we are featuring a Cruising Division and a SingleHanded Division. The Cruising Division does not require a rating certificate and motoring is allowed. The SingleHanded Division, like the DoubleHanded Division and PHRF Divisions, will need a PHRF certificate.

The unique Cruising Division's rating is based on the Portsmouth Rating Factor as published by US Sailing. To make a long equation short, the Cruising Division's corrected time will be equal to elapsed time plus a ratio of total motoring time based on the boat's rating. Skippers will log their total motoring time and submit it at the finish. In order to keep things interesting and more competitive, motoring will be prohibited for a short stint at the beginning and end of the race. The Cruising Division will start an hour and a half earlier than the other fleets.

The SingleHanded Division is open to solo sailors who have successfully completed a solo event or have detailed logs documenting a solo passage, either lasting at least 24 hours. Membership in Lake Michigan Singlehanded Society or Great Lakes Singlehanded Society automatically qualifies you. The Lake Michigan Singlehanded Society will be the final arbiter concerning eligibility.

AREA II VICE COMMODORE PROFILE – RICH LARSEN by Glenn McCarthy Rich Larsen is a real find for LMSRF. He is President and General Manager of Manitowoc Marina (winter storage, summer moorage, service, boat sales, charter, ships store). Born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, he is married to Kathy and has two children, Emily and Anders. He began sailing at the Youth Sailing Program at Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club when he was 8 years old in Pram classes. Through the years he has sailed on Prams, Turns, Flying Scots, FJs, 470s, 505s, Thistles, Ensigns, “ big boats,” including a Soverel 33, Soverel 39, San Juan 30, N/M 36, J/35, Jeanneau 50, Alerion Express 33, 27, and 33 Sport, F27, F31, etc., Swan 39 and 375, many C&Cs, plus many, many more (he got tired of writing this answer!). In addition, he has owned a Pearson Commander, J/30, C&C 36, and a . His sailing career has been mainly Lake Michigan and Green Bay based, with his furthest travel to Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota when he was in college.

The funniest stuff he ever saw racing is unprintable, ... and dang, is it funny. Ask him sometime when you meet him. The printable stuff includes watching spinnakers deployed sideways, genoas upside down, you name it, he saw it. One special story that came to mind, was he became an owner of one of the boats he used to crew on, where he used to walk around the deck in very light air and spray the squeaking hardware down with WD40. Just what everyone wanted when they were trying to be still and make the boat sail in 2 knots of breeze!

The most exciting thing he experienced probably had something to do with a broach in the night during a Mackinac race …, maybe his first Mackinac over 30 years ago, when they spun around several times in about 68 foot waves on a moonless night. They wrapped the spinnaker and the owner wouldn’t let them cut it down, so they sailed through the night with the chute wrapped around the headstay and eventually sailed into Beaver Island's leeward side and then cut it down. His two fondest times aboard includes just about anytime he got to race and win with his family on board, or, when it was just Rich and his buddy with a boatful of very young kids racing the 100Miler on a J/35 and winning overall against all the boats with “real crew” on board. Great example on how to do it, Rich!

How does he see LMSRF benefiting clubs and sailors? By trying to “bring back” the raw enjoyment of sailboat racing without all the politics, rules and ratings. Bluntness, my favorite! During his tenure with LMSRF he would like to find a way for folks to start racing in the nontraditional sense … Fun races, main and only family races, and even fun cruises (flotillas). Get folks who don’t think they can race because they don’t have a “racing” sailboat out participating in some activities.

Didn't I say he is a real find? Welcome aboard Rich, welcome aboard.

JOHN SIMONS BIDS ADIEU by Gail M. Turluck After countless years of leadership and sail racing as a member of Waukegan Yacht Club, John Simons has listed Blue Heaven , acquired a trawler and is moving on from leadership in the sailing community. Simons quietly developed many new offshore sailors, offered his boat freely to serve as a Race Committee platform not only at Waukegan Yacht Club, but also to Lake Bluff, Anchorage, North Shore Yacht Clubs and others that had a need. Simons served as Waukegan Yacht Club's LMSRF Representative for some time.

Simons and his wife, Priscilla, have acquired the motor yacht Changing Latitudes and shared an intent to complete the "Great Loop" (learn more: www.greatloop.org ) with her. Their new toy is a Cruisers 4450 motor yacht. It took them ten days last fall to deliver her to Waukegan from Lake Ontario. They motored 950 miles, crossed four of the five Great Lakes and burned 1,650 gallons of diesel fuel. On their great adventure they transited the Welland Canal, a Recent Blue Heaven crew party. A fine series of eight locks that raised their boat 296 ending to a great 10 year run with an feet from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. awesome crew. Photo credits: John Simons.

Thank you, John, for all your service to our sport. Safe travels and best wishes for a complete "Loop!"

SAIL CHICAGO'S COLGATE 26 RACING PROGRAM by Robert Cohen, Colgate Racing Coordinator Sail Chicago's popular Wednesday night Colgate 26 racing program for members will be back for 2014. As we like to say, we teach sailors to race and racers to sail.

Three fiveweek racing series are being offered between June and September. With a crew of three to four, plus a coach, racers will learn each position on the boat (helmsman, foredeck, jib and spinnaker trimmer, main trimmer, and pit). Additionally, you'll learn about racing tactics such as starts, rounding a mark, and finishes and you'll learn to read the competition and adjust accordingly.

What many racers found particularly rewarding last year were new skills that can be applied to recreational sailing. Haven't flown a spinnaker in a while? This is a chance to get a great refresher. Racing also encourages exceptional boat handling skills.

Afterwards, all participants are invited to join us and fellow racers from other clubs for drinks and discussion at the Columbia Yacht Club, just a stone's throw from the tender dock. Complete information is available at http://www.sailchicago.org/race .

FUN ALERT! by Jack Landwehr, Racine Yacht Club Yard Director To end this harsh winter on a positive note and to look forward to open water, Racine Yacht Club organized a contest to see when the ice in the Harbor directly east of its Clubhouse would melt or break up. A timing device and weighted object was placed some 100 feet offshore in the Racine Harbor, east of Racine Yacht Club.

Members and guests entered predictions as to when the weighted object will fall through ice, tripping a line connected to the clock's battery, stopping the contest clock. The clock is set within one second of Central Standard Time. Entries closed March 16, 2014.

Ice thickness was over 2 feet in early March and was down to 4 inches at last report. Racine Yacht Club will publish the winner and exact time will be published on their web site.

Weighted object with orange flag sits on the ice at Racine Harbor, tethered to a clock that is lighted by a solarpowered light so that the stoppage will be recordable. Photo provided by Jack Landwehr.

SPIRIT WALKER WINS 2013 ORR GREAT LAKES CHAMPIONSHIP The Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) has announced the winners of the 4th annual Great Lakes Championship Series.

First place: Vern McCain/Bob Hillier, Muskegon, MI, Spirit Walker (BSH 41) Second place: Chris Saxton, Detroit, MI, Vortices , (J/145) Third place: Bill Martin, Ann Arbor, MI, Stripes , (Great Lakes 70)

“Racing under the ORR rule is a very honest handicapping system and makes for great competition between boats of different designs,” said McCain.

According to ORR spokesperson Frank Kern, 2013 is the first year in which all current ORR certificate holders qualified. “In 2012, we had 48 entries versus 93 for 2013,” Kern stated. Kern expects an even larger fleet of competitors with the Chicago Race to Mackinac following the Bayview Mackinac Race in 2014. He predicts many of the competitors from the eastern Great Lakes will participate in both events.

This was the fourth consecutive offering of the ORR Great Lakes Championship Series and entries continue to rise each season. To qualify for the series, racers needed a valid 2013 ORR certificate and must have raced in two of the following races, with one of the two being a Mackinac Race: Queen’s Cup, Bayview Mackinac Race, Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, Verve Cup (point to point race) or Bayview Long Distance Race.

DREDGING UPDATES Army Corps To spend $25 Million on Great Lakes Dredging by Michigan Boating Industries Association The Army Corps of Engineers is slated to spend an extra $25 million on Great Lakes navigation projects, including money aimed at shrinking a backlog of dredging projects. Leland Harbor is one of the Corps' to bedredged harbors. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) als o happens to have done dredging there last year. Bill Boik, programs and grants manager for the parks and recreation division of the DNR, said it needs to be done again.

Money for the new projects came after Great Lakes area senators sent a letter last mo nth to the Army Corps of Engineers. It called for more of the $200 million Congress approved for the Corps in January to be redirected to Great Lakes projects. New dredging will take place in Grand Haven Harbor, Leland Harbor, St. Joseph Harbor, and other locales. The Michigan state Legislature last year set aside $21 million for some 57 dredging projects. NEW CHICAGO REGATTA BENEFITING LURIE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL ORGANIZED BY THE PINNACLE FOUNDATION Chicago to host a major new regatta that will bring businesses and boaters together to support Lurie Children's Hospital. Org anized by the Pinnacle Foundation, the Chicago Regatta includes an epic sailboat race, an enjoyable cruisersailor day, a powerboat poker run, and a rocking party that promises to be among the best ever on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Sailors and power bo aters in Chicago are blessed in many ways... It’s fitting that the Chicago marine community comes together and shows what we are made of by supporting the great kids of Lurie Children’s.

The Pinnacle Foundation has announced that it has organized a new r egatta to benefit the Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. The Chicago Regatta will include an epic sailboat race, an enjoyable cruisersailor day, a powerboat poker run, and a rocking party that promises to be among the best ever on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The Chicago Regatta has attracted some of the largest and most prestigious yachts in the region, including Dale Smirl’s 66 foot Defiance , Mark Hauf’s 52 foot Imedi , Peter Thornton's 70 foot Il Mostro , and Gary Feracota's syndicated 7 7 foot Ocean . In addition to fifteen or so skilled crew, these “Turbo Class” yachts will have aboard several business executives that are making considerable donations to support the hospital. “I can’t imagine a more exciting way to help the kids,” said Br ian Holdampf, President of Adapt Telephone Technologies, who will be racing on Defiance .

“This is going to be an epic competition,” said Jim Banovitz, Captain of the 77 foot yacht Ocean and Pinnacle Foundation board member. “The course combines the endura nce of a distance race with the action of a short course.” The sailboat race course is being designed and officiated by Jim Hellquist and

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation 22 April 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter

Don Waller, two highly regarded experts in yacht racing who have more than 80 years of race experience between them. “We expect more than 50 racing sailboats of all sizes to compete,” said Hellquist. Powerboats will compete in the Chicago Regatta as well. The Power Poker Run is competition of luck and skill where powerboats cruise Chicago's lakefront haunts to gather cards and build a winning poker hand. The last card is drawn at the regatta party with much fanfare and excitement. "The power boaters I know are very generous," said Ron Silvia, supporter of the event. "They will be a big part of the regatta."

After the race, the Rocking Regatta Party will happen. “Landlubbers, power boaters, sailors everyone is invited to what will be one of the best postrace parties on the lake,” said Tracey Kreiling, sailor and organizer of the party. "The food and venue will be as epic as the race itself."

"This will be one of the best parties of year,” said Nicholas Foderaro, sailor, law student and newly seated Pinnacle Foundation board member. “The great music, dancing, food and people will make this a night to remember."

But the Chicago Regatta is much more than a boat race and party. “It is a unifying event for the entire marine community to support a great cause,” said Gary Feracota, President of the Pinnacle Foundation. “Sailors and power boaters in Chicago are blessed in many ways. Our city has vast parks and beautiful marinas along the shore of the finest boating waterway in the US. We have superb yacht clubs, outstanding boat yards and support facilities, and a wellrun race circuit for boats large and small. We have active involvement from the Coast Guard and Marine Police which keeps us safe and sets the standard for the rest of the nation." "So it’s fitting that the Chicago marine community comes together and shows what we are made of by supporting the great kids of Lurie Children’s,” he concluded.

Chicago hosts several onthewater charity events each year, the most popular being the Leukemia Cup Regatta organized by Columbia Yacht Club. Milwaukee has the popular Louie’s Last Regatta in support of the Milwaukee Children’s Hospital. “We have been inspired by the great folks that make the Leukemia Cup and Louie’s happen,” said Feracota. “We hope to follow their excellent lead.”

The Chicago Regatta will take place on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at the city’s new, award winning 31st Street Harbor. Chicago boasts the largest municipal marina system in the US with slips for more than 5,000 vessels. The Chicago Park District and Westrec, its marina management firm, have volunteered 100 slips for the regatta, showing strong support for the event.

Steve Black, 71, died March 17, 2014 following a long personal battle against cancer. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Black moved to Michigan where he ran an educational publishing company. He started sailing recreationally in his mid30s in regattas hosted by the Grand Haven Sailing Club and remained a member to his death. Black learned the sport from singlehanders and preferred this aspect of sailing. Black made three singlehanded transatlantic voyages. In the Legend Cup, he set a multi record time of 15 days aboard his Newick 40′ . Black’s third single handed transatlantic voyage was in 1992 in the I, where he sailed his 40′ IOR racer, Caribbean . Black also undertook volunteer tasks such as founding the Lake Michigan Singlehanded Society, where he ran the races and conducted seminars to educate interested sailors. This led to the end of his 15year publishing career and a threeyear stint as executive director of US Sailing in Newport, Rhode Island. His next endeavor was to manage the Sailing World National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regattas. However, his biggest legacy will be the Caribbean 1500 cruising rally, which first set sail in 1990 with a fleet of 50 cruising boats sailing from Newport, Rhode Island and Norfolk, Virginia to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands. The impetus for the rally started when Black saw that cruising sailors outnumbered offshore racing sailors, but there were virtually no organized events for cruisers. The Caribbean 1500 rally offered the chance to sail in company, combined with preparatory seminars taught by sailing experts, an SSB radio safety net at sea, and of course a great deal of fun and socializing. Always leading from the front, Steve sailed with the rally, helping to inspire and troubleshoot the fleet at sea. When Black announced his decision to retire in 2010, he was determined that “the 1500″ – which was very much his creation – would continue and develop into the future. The 2014 rally this fall will be the 25th edition of the Caribbean 1500, a fitting memorial to a man who encouraged so many cruisers to discover the delights offshore sailing.

Jack J. Patterson, age 74, passed away on Monday December 16, 2013 at Mercy Hospital – Sherman Campus in Muskegon, Michigan. He married Mary Lou Eales on June 12, 1965 in Oak Park, Illinois at Grace Episcopal Church. Patterson worked as a printer at RR Donnelley in Chicago, Illinois and then later worked as the store manager for the Lands’ End Yacht Store in Chicago. He then started Patterson Marine Services in Illinois. He later moved the business to Pentwater, Michigan. Patterson was a member of Pentwater Planning Commission, Pentwater Yacht Club and past President; President of the Pentwater Athletic Boosters, Past President of Ensign Fleet #70, Past Commodore of the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club, Past President of National Association, and Pentwater Citizen of the Year in 2004. BODACIOUS DREAM EXPEDITIONSLEG 3 AND THE WINDS OF CHANGE CIRCUMNAVIGATION DAY 176 by Dave Rearick with Bodacious Dream and (the newly re-inflated) Franklin March 26, 2014: Departing Wellington, New ZealandBodacious Dream and I just departed Wellington, New Zealand to set upon Leg 3 of the circumnavigation! We're very excited to be back at sea! I greatly enjoyed my stay here with all the close friends I’ve made, both recently and over the past two years, but the time has come to head once more beyond the horizon. Bo is looking and feeling good after a major maintenance overhaul – and we’re both all about getting rolling again!

Back in the Flow ... Sailing, as many of you know, is a practice that requires regular adjustments. You must constantly monitor weather, winds, seas and other conditions and then make the necessary changes to your course and trim. This global voyage we are on is no different, though sometimes it happens that the adjustments necessitated are more significant than usual.

After arriving in Wellington, I had to make a trip home to the States for personal and family reasons. It was good to visit with my people and to have that time with each other. But with the trip home, weather issues and other delays along the way, it has become necessary to make some changes to our gameplan so that we might continue in a proper and seamanlike manner.

The change I am talking about affects the route the circumnavigation will take. Cape Horn, which my good friend Tim Kent calls the Everest of sailing, has always been on our course for the circumnavigation, as well as a longheld dream of mine to experience firsthand. Unfortunately with the delays, the season has become quite late, and by the time I would reach Cape Horn, it would be the equivalent of November 1st in the Northern Hemisphere. Considering this and other factors, it appears that I will have to sadly leave sailing around Cape Horn for another time.

I have decided to head instead up through the Pacific Ocean, which will allow me a stopover in the amazing Galapagos Islands followed by a transit through the Panama Canal. Both of these experiences will be exciting and rewarding and have long been on my list of mustdo’s. I’m hoping to arrive in the Galapagos sometime in early May. Once there, I will explore some of the amazing sites that these islands have provided scientists since the days when Charles Darwin first visited on board the H.M.S. Beagle in 1831. I look forward to sharing this amazing place with you all.

Wellington Harbor and that long, low white cloud ... It’s not easy to leave New Zealand, land of the long, low white cloud. I’ve become quite fond of its beautiful landscapes, mountains and glaciers and the many

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation27 April 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter wonderful people who have show n their support to me and to our venture: from David Minors, the great crews at Duffy Rigging, Matty G. at MG Composites to the awesome guys at North Sails and Barton's Marine. And then there are my friends at the Royal Port Nelson Yacht Club, Chaffer’s Ma rina as well as a host of others including Lapo and Renata Ancillotti.

Lapo, Renata and I began our friendship about three years ago when Lapo was commissioned to supervise the building of Bodacious Dream. He and Renata have become great friends and Lapo’ s genius as regards the design and construction of the boat continues to amaze me. Many thanks to everyone in New Zealand, and for their part in creating the best Class 40 in the world!

So, as we set off on our journey, change, as it always does, has ente red the picture. While the course change was not in our original plan, the lesson we keep in mind is that life is the journey and not the destination. Dreams do come true, though sometimes differently than you planned. And while you may grumble and grouse about it for a while, at some point, you see and accept the way things are … and you realize it’s time to let your sails out and move forward!

There will be more exciting news coming soon. And thank you for your continued support and many good wishes!

ANOTHER SPIN ON BOATS FINDING CREW, CREW FINDING BOATS, BOATS FINDING OWNERS, ETC. by Gail M. Turluck A recent post to the LMSRF Yahoo!Group caught my eye, but due to its extreme brevity, it was a wary eye. The post announced a new web site, one promising to be helpful to boaters. With a brief statement it provided a web link, the author's initials, nothing more. In concern for my computer' s security, I did not click the link. I did, however, respond to the writer, and though it took a little while, we spoke by phone so I could verify that the web site is trustworthy.

Kenneth Cox, the web site developer, has modeled this after a very suc cessful similar web site in Great Britain. He's eager to help boaters find matches for their needs, by volunteer, trade, partnerships, purchases, job, whatever it takes. From the web page: Every Boat Needs a Buddy

Every boat owner will experience some or all of these problems.

Find it difficult to get down to the boat as often as they would like, and when time allows they find there are jobs to be done rather than going out on the boat. Find it difficult to justify the expense of ownership as time constraints mean that the boat is little used. When you do have time, nobody else does.

What you need is a Boat Buddy! Every boat needs a Boat Buddy or two to enable the owner to enjoy their boat more and share in the running cost and/or maintenance.

Visit http://www.boatbuddysusa.com/ to see if there is something at the web page that can be helpful for you and your boating needs.

The program has been upgraded to include not only a practical element of onwater training and clinics, but also a strong academic component of classroom instruction and exclusive access to webinars and a wide range of online resource materials on .

"We feel this is the most comprehensive way to train sailors who are not only interested in learning and mastering the discipline of match racing, but also among fleet racers who want to hone their skills in key elements of boat handling, strategy and tactics," said Jordan Reece, CMRC Head Coach. "The combination of both onwater and offwater instruction is a unique feature of this program, and gives both new and experienced sailors an opportunity to learn fast."

The program is accessible to both localbased sailors and for those from outside Chicago, with weekday evening practices and classroom sessions held three times per week from MaySeptember, weekend Clinics and access to Grade 2 and Grade 3 regattas. Leading the instructional program is young match race talent Jordan Reece, whose Estate Master Sailing Team powered by Etihad Airways has competed at events around the world, and reached 15th last year in the ISAF World Open Rankings List. Reece last month won the Hardy Cup held in his home town of Sydney, Australia, and in 2012 was the runnerup at the Chicago Match Cup, the only US stop on the Alpari . Reece will join Don Wilson's Convexity team as a tactician for the season. Wilson and Reece are already off to a strong start, having won their first regatta together at the Carlos Aguilar Grade 2 Match Race in St. Thomas last November.

"I'm excited for opportunity to be at CMRC and help grow match racing," said Reece. "Over the past three years I've been here as a competitor and intern, I have been impressed with the organization, the facility, and the people. I know competing here really improved my skills, so it will be exciting to share this knowledge with others."

CMRC has restructured the pricing plans this year to include both an unlimited, flat rate option and a pay persession system. Offered are an unlimited access to CMRC plan and a new paypersession system.

TAKING A NEW TACK IN SINGLEHANDED SAILINGO'DAY & HANLEY For the first time US Sailing will have a US Sailing National Championship as part of a larger Class event. The 2014 Laser North American Championships at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, on June 1215, 2014, in Long Beach, California, will double as the U.S. Singlehanded Championship and the top eligible male Laser and female sailor will be named United States Singlehanded Champions.

With the growth of onedesign sailing here in the U.S, and with ever more events in the sailing calendar, it became clear to US Sailing that the traditional qualifying series was limiting the number of sailors who could compete for the O’Day and Hanley Trophies. Our goal is to allow more people to have a chance to compete for these historic championships. As the Laser class is one of the largest singlehanded classes in the world, identifying the top U.S. Singlehanded sailor through the North American Championships is a natural fit.

Who is eligible to be named U.S. Singlehanded Champion? Sailors must be at least 17 years of age in the calendar year and current members of US Sailing and the Laser Class. All the sailors will be scored as one fleet, with the highest eligible male Laser sailor winning the O’Day Trophy and the highest female Laser Radial sailor winning the Hanley Trophy.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 1000-1030: Welcome and Introductions Welcome: Matt Wierzbach, SEAS Opening Remarks & Introductions: Caitlin Niemic, Training Coordinator, US Sailing

1030-12:30: Topi c #1: Junior Sailing: Beyond Regattas For many junior sailors, there is pressure to compete once you reach a certain skill level or age. At the Sailing Leadership Forum, the presentation “Junior Sailing: Beyond Regattas” discussed the decline in sailing p articipation as children got older. During this discussion, we will address why junior sailors are leaving the sport, how to keep them involved, and how to stay involved in the sport without racing. We will also touch on the types of programming being of fered and how to reach a broader audience.

1200-1245: Networking lunch sponsored by

1245-1430: Topic #2: Developing Adaptive programs Adaptive Programs fall into two very distinct categorizes: Cognitive and Physical. And as such, the requirement s also differ greatly. This session provides a “how to” on starting programs of both types, from the places to look for funding, to how it impacts your insurance to what your staff needs to know. We’ll highlight a few programs that have been successful as well and identify what they’ve done to make it work.

1430-1445: Break

1445-1600: Topic #3: Insurance During this discussion, we will go over commonly asked questions regarding insurance, liability, and coverage as it pertains to sailing instructors, yacht clubs, and community sailing centers. This includes what questions you should ask your insurance company.

1730-1930: Social Please join us at afterwards for a cocktail and to continue the conversation at the Sheboygan Yacht Club Bar.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Reviewing Glenn McCarthy’s comments on the US Sailing Leadership Forum, I pretty much agree with his analysis. As a very long time US Sailing member that has been involved at many levels of US Sailing from the Board on down, I have often been critical about “What are we really doing to help the members?” I did not attend the Forum but reviewed many of the videotapes that were produced and were online. I felt the question was still very much unanswered in concrete ideas to really help promote the interest and participation in the sport of sailing. Most of the time in the videos was seeing the “stars” talking about themselves or with each other.

I think we need more regional meetings that can exchange and promote real “How to” benefits and forget the “all inclusive” Leadership Forums that overshadows great grass root level ideas that work and can be exchanged. Hang in there Glenn (McCarthy)! You're doing great work for us “little guys”! --Don Glasell

I think your monthly newsletter could include a list of activities related or not related to sailing that various Yacht Clubs on Lake Michigan are hosting. Regattas, food tastings, beverage tastings, full moon sails, and concerts.

I say this so nonboaters that read your monthly newsletter realize that there is more to their local Yacht Club than membership fees, boat payments and boating costs. At Racine Yacht Club 60% or more of the members don't own their own boat. Memberships at Yacht Clubs have to increase before boating numbers increase.

If cruisers are going to stop at a Yacht Club, it would be nice to know if there is a special event scheduled at that time. An article in your newsletter may provide that contact.

We encourage our members to bring guests down to the club for drink at the bar or for one of our special events we host throughout the year; in hopes that the guest become a member.

Thanks for all the work your organization does to make sailing on Lake Michigan GREAT! --Jack Landwehr

I need some fun race ideas for small boats. I would like to have a series of races just for (Portsmouth rating) '95+' boatsSunfish, Laser Radials, 420sthat are short and maybe not 'standard.' But they would be fun and less intimidating than the USUAL club races. I have looked at http://lmsrf.org/lmsrf/index.php/funtimes website, which gives me hope ... –Lisa Weatherholt

2014 Farr 40 Midwinter Championship Cabrillo Beach Club, Los Angeles, California March 26-29, 2014 16 boats The Farr 40 Midwinter Championship got off to a riproaring start as 1618 knot northerly winds buffeted the 16boat fleet, making boathandling difficult for skippers and crews while providing exciting racing. Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club hosted the Midwinter Championship, which is the opening regatta on the 2014 International Circuit. Principal race officer John Busch was able to reel off three races in succession with minimal course changes as the wind held fairly steady from 255 degrees. In Race 1, the left side paid on the first upwind leg and tactician Bill Hardesty called it correctly as Flash Gordon 6, skippered by Chicago architect Helmut Jahn, rounded the top mark in first and never relinquished the lead. Nightshift just nipped Plenty at the line in a photo finish to take second. A bit of class history was on display as the first Farr 40 ever launched competed. Flyer, owned by Santa Barbara resident Stanford Shaw, is Hull No. 40001, which was built by Carroll Marine in 1997 for Newport owner Steve Garland. Originally known as Wired, the boat lived in Chicago under two different owners before being taken to the West Coast by a fourth. Shaw, who has dreamed of owning a Farr 40 since he was a boy, found Hull No. 40001 in serious disrepair at Long Beach Yacht Sales. “I put a lot of love into getting her back in shape,” said Shaw, who spent three years rehabilitating the boat. “There wasn’t even a spinnaker pole or any winches. 2014 Etchells U.S. National Championship/ Annual Coral Reef Cup Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami, Florida March 20-23, 2014 Fortyseven teams from eight countries gathered at Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club for the Etchells winter season finale. The eighth annual Coral Reef Cup sponsored by Mount Gay Rum served as the 2014 Etchells U.S. National Championship. The forecast for the threeday event was tricky, with a stalled front and no wind predicted for the final day on Sunday. The Coral Reef Yacht Club Race Committee headed by PRO Brian Fink planned on running as many races as possible on Friday and Saturday, just in case Sunday turned out to be a drifter, which it did.—Connie Bischoff 16. 2014 Lightning Midwinter Championship Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami, Florida March 15–18, 2014 With a passing front in the morning keeping the 53boat Lightning fleet ashore, the Midwinter Championship concluded with one breezy 5leg race. While Skip Dieball won the final race, it was not enough to pass David Starck to take the overall lead. After three days and seven races, reigning world champion Starck, sailing with brother Joe Starck and Neal Fowler, took the title with 17 points. 3. 45/ 15445 Fisher, Matt Wake, Todd/Wake, Kristine 12 [13] 3 5 1 6 4 31 8. 02/ 15480 Faude, Bill Drake, Jared/Schoendorf, Mike 9 2 6 [20] 17 3 13 50 17. 64/ 15064 Bemis, Jason Coplan, Justin/Prior, Danielle [34] 8 7 28 33 9 5 90

US 52 Super Series/TP52 US Championship Key West, Florida and Miami, Florida January 20-24 and March 5-9, 2014 Doug DeVos’ Quantum Racing completed a double title ‘slam dunk’ in the sweltering Miami heat and light winds as they collected the US 52 Championship title with a solid final day and also clinched the US 52 Super Series title, adding the Miami regatta win to their event victory in Key West in January. While Takashi Okura’s crew from Sled celebrated their own two bullets ending to their perfect day off South Beach Miami, Quantum Racing – with steering and Terry Hutchinson calling tactics – twice got the better of their duels with Azzurra. The quiet satisfaction of the victorious American team at a job well done, securing the US title with a fourth and third in difficult, very shifty conditions contrasted sharply with the deep frustrations of the Azzurra crew. Twice they had started better and were ahead of Quantum Racing but both times their choices and tactics proved inferior. When Azzurra needed to put points on their rivals in fact they ended up dropping well behind, scoring a sixth and seventh. Having lead the regatta at interim stages the emblematic team from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will analyse their learning before starting up in Europe in May Capri when the Barclays 52 Super Series begins.

After the fleet was held ashore waiting for the breeze to build, the first contest was sailed in only 6 to 8 knots of very patchy, streaky breeze. With just two points separating Quantum Racing and Azzurra before the start, a match racing tussle seemed inevitable. After the requisite circling it was Azzurra which broke way to make the start they wanted towards the inshore end of the line. When they crossed it was Azzurra ahead but on the next pattern of shifts Quantum Racing jumped clear ahead of them. Quantum Racing finished two boats ahead of Azzurra in fourth, extending their cushion to four points into the final race. The last race of the US

Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation41 April 2014 Lake Michigan SuRF Newsletter season was marked by a big, big wind shift to the right. Sled were all over it, working the right flank almost alone and so, again, led all the way around the short, but slow, and exacting final contest. Quantum Racing took third, only one second behind Interlodge as the pair dived for the line side by side.

2014 Bacardi Miami Sailing Week Coral Reef Yacht Club, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, Coconut Grove Sailing Club, US Sailing Center Miami and Shake-A-Leg, Miami, Florida March 2-8, 2014 The fifth annual running of BACARDI Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG was held March 28, 2014, with regatta headquarters at Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove. The sixday racing schedule was headlined by the Star class which contested the 87th . For the final three days of the regatta, the Stars shared Biscayne Bay with competitors in the Audi , J/70, , 640 and VX One classes. During Bacardi Miami Sailing Week sailors enjoyed the hospitality lounge, Bacardi Rum tastings, as well as a special showing of the film 07.07.07 Amorita’s Unlucky Day. A special exhibit, Wynwood Sails Color the Grove, featured the work of 10 artists of the graffiti and street art genre taking inspiration from the sea and sailing to create a work on canvas shaped like the jib of a sailboat. The art was displayed at Coco Walk, the iconic openair shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in Coconut Grove, from March 28, daily between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. In addition, select images from the 2010 to 2013 regattas, from the lenses of respected marine photographers Franco Pace of Italy, and Onne van der Wal and Cory Silken of the USA , were displayed alongside the canvasses created specifically for Wynwood Sails Color the Grove to juxtapose “the City meets the Sea” for this unique art event. The mantra “a bad day on the water is better than a good day at the office” will resonate with many of the sailors who have been racing at the fifth Bacardi® Miami Sailing Week presented by EFG. While the breeze was higher than allowed for competition by some class rules, for the finale there was so little wind it appeared as though a raftup was taking place on Biscayne Bay instead of a regatta. Wrapping up a sixday schedule, the 180 teams racing in six onedesign classes –Melges 20, J/70, Melges 24, Star, and VX One – completed enough races for the victors to collect the spoils, and, with the midday cancellation of additional races the sailors had ample time to enjoy the legendary hospitality of Bacardi. Since 2000, there has been a jinx for the day one winning Star team as none in that position has gone on to claim the prized Bacardi Cup. That was the case again this year for (San Diego, Calif.) and Miami sailor , who won the first race of the series to jump to the top of the 55boat Star fleet. The duo, who shared both Olympic Gold and a win in 2000, had not sailed together for 10 years. “I’m from Miami, live here, have a lot of friends and this result [second overall] feels like a win,” said Liljedahl who has more wins of the Bacardi Cup (five) than any other crew in the event’s history, while Reynolds holds the record (seven) for skippers. “It was a good event for Mark and me. I have a lot of respect for him, he is an outstanding skipper, he is very balanced and I like racing with him.” of Brazil, the twotime (’88, ’96) Olympic Medalist, with crew Samuel Gonzalves, moved to the top of the Star standings on the second day of racing and held that position to the end. They took the win with five points, holding a fivepoint lead over Reynolds and Liljedahl. In the 41boat Audi Melges 20 fleet, reigning world champion John Taylor (Jupiter, Fla.) went home the winner after posting finishes of 35 the last day to move to the top of the standings with 35 points. Drew Freides (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) was second overall with 37 points; Russell Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) placed third overall with 41 points; followed by Brazilian sailor Cesar Gomes Neto with 44 points. Defending champion Michael Kiss (Holland, Mich.), also a threetime national champion in the class, completed the topfive with 45 points. With scores of 1011, Will Welles (Portsmouth, R.I.) took the win in the 40boat J/70 fleet with 12 points, winning the tiebreaker over BMSW defending champion Brian Keane (Weston, Mass.) who had finishes of 723.
