Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music Ashley Denise Melzer A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of American Studies (Folklore). Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Dr. William Ferris Dr. Robert Cantwell Dr. Patricia Sawin © 2009 Ashley Denise Melzer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ASHLEY MELZER: Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music (Under the directions of Dr. William Ferris, Dr. Robert Cantwell, and Dr. Patricia Sawin) This thesis investigates the relationship between the modern old-time and alt.country movements through the comparison of four different female musicians: Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case. These four women often pull from the same wellspring of old-time songs/structures/sounds, but their instincts come from exceptionally different places. The disparity between the ways they approach their music, reveals how the push toward modern capitalist industrialism has affected how different artists and communities access and transmit those old-world icons and sounds. Furthermore, their engagement specifically with the topic of gender exposes key tactical differences. Old-time musicians, Washburn and Gellert, work within the strictures of tradition so as to remain in dialogue with their community. Welch and Case play into the experimental bent of alt.country to emotionally affect listeners in order to create discreet, personal connections between themselves and their audience. iii To the ones who listen and love me anyway iv PREFACE In the summer, Florida is so hot the home becomes some dark prison of necessary air conditioning.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Pop Music Ahoy! TIGTII vA. II : None More Black Packet by Kevin Clair and Jack Rousseau of Carleton University Theme: Pop Music Tossups 1. Hailing from Forest Hills, Queens, they recorded their fIrst album for $6,000 in 1976. Like many u.s. bands of their ilk, they were much bigger in Britain, influencing the two bands with whom they would come to be identifIed as the forefathers of a new brand of rock music. The fIrst track on their self-titled album, "Blitzkrieg Bop," is inexplicably on the Chicago Bulls Greatest Hits album, and other hits from this ·group include "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "I Wanna Be Sedated." FTP, identify this group who lost two founding members, Joey and Dee Dee, in recent years. A: The Ramones 2. Two of the founding members went on to form the Krautrock band Neu!, and one popular story tells that the band's frequent long breaks from releasing an album are due to another founding member's love affair with cycling. The co"er of their 1978 album The Man Machine recalls Soviet propaganda posters, and the album itself contains the unlikely dance-craze single "The Robots." Prior to their fascination with technological themes, the group concentrated on traveling, with two consecutive albums devoted to cars and trains, respectively. FTP, name this Gertnan group responsible, in part, for almost all pop music today, whose most well-known albums are Autobahn and Trans-Europe Express. A: Kraftwerk ( 3. Their front man featured prominently on CNN after the Rodney King beatings, and their "minister of propaganda" was kicked out of the group after stating that Jews caused "the majority of the wickedness that goes on across the globe." That remark overshadowed, for a time, the fact that this group dominated hip-hop during the late 1980s, injecting a political message into a genre that had largely been dominated by party music and gangster posturing.

  • Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience
Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who perform as “Gillian Welch”) and their 2011 album The Harrow & the Harvest are analyzed vis-à-vis the ways in which their musical and visual invocations of the rural past dialogue with a psychic landscape of collective memory. iii Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to study in the Music and Culture program at Carleton and the privilege of working alongside such dedicated scholars, professors and fellow students alike. I want to especially thank my supervisor, Dr.

  • My Morning Jacket
For Immediate Release 13 March 2017 Contact: Jodi Joseph Director of Communications 413.664.4481 x8113 [email protected] My Morning Jacket Critically acclaimed rockers in North Adams, Mass. on August 12 With Pennsylvania rockers The Districts NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — My Morning Jacket has built a reputation as a group who consistently challenges the paradigms in which they are placed. From psychedelic to soul to classic rock and roll, My Morning Jacket’s range remains steadfast throughout the band’s 16 years. The Louisville quintet released the first of 7 albums in 1999 with their last three, 2008’s Evil Urges, 2011’s Circuital, and 2015’s The Waterfall, each receiving Grammy nominations — the latter debuting at number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. The Waterfall, recorded in northern California’s Stinson Beach, is steeped in the spirit of where it was crafted. The band features Jim James (singer/songwriter, guitar), Tom Blankenship (bass), Patrick Hallahan (drums), Carl Broemel (guitar, pedal steel, saxophone, vox), and Bo Koster (keyboards, vox). Known as one of the most engaging, eclectic, and electric bands, in no small part due to Jim James’ other-worldly vocals, they’ve become legendary for their live performances. Joined by Pennsylvania rock outfit The Districts, My Morning Jacket brings it to the North Adams stage on Saturday, August 12, at 7:30pm. Throughout its almost two-decade-long career, My Morning Jacket has always had a healthy respect for living in the moment and the inherent mysteries of creativity. After spending almost four years apart, the band reunited at the California coast to record The Waterfall, which touches on aspects of the band’s celebrated past while pushing forward with a giddy assurance.
