When we first moved here all I Bridgette Pendleton-Snyder knew about Rochester had come from Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” about the Finger Lakes being shaped Lori Bryce Toni Beth Weasner by the handprint of the Almighty. That’s it. Our move was around the time of the Bicentennial and I recall Deb Zakrzewski watching the Tall Ships sailing near the Statue of Liberty on our small black and white TV. Print http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Print/?PrintAliasPath=/en-us/Lifestyle... Cool Music Scene: Louisville, Kentucky Jonah Bayer | 02.21.2008 Forget about Seattle or Brooklyn. Over the past few decades Louisville, Kentucky, has quietly constructed one of the strongest music scenes in the country. Check out a few of the city’s most popular acts as well as a couple of newcomers. My Morning Jacket My Morning Jacket are perhaps the biggest band from Louisville, Kentucky, in the past decade—and the only band we know of that can unite jam band fanatics, indie rock purists, and classic rock enthusiasts alike. While all of the band’s albums are stellar, we recommend checking out their breakthrough 2003 album It Still Moves, which features “One Big Holiday,” a song that can be considered the “Free Bird” for the iTunes generation. Oh, and if that doesn’t impress you, Netflix a copy of their live DVD Okonokos, which beautifully showcases the cinematic grandeur of the band’s live performances. 1 of 4 2/25/2008 12:57 PM Print http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Print/?PrintAliasPath=/en-us/Lifestyle... VHS Or Beta Like all great scenes, the Louisville music community is extremely incestuous. In fact, My Morning Jacket’s guitarists Jim James and Carl Broemel both guest star on VHS Or Beta’s latest album Bring On the Comments. That’s not to say that the bands sound the same—VHS Or Beta’s dance-influenced rock jams are more at home in a trance club setting than the Burning Man festival—but both acts have successfully elbowed aside any genre restrictions and helped to unite seemingly disparate scenes with their music.

These four women often pull from the same wellspring of old-time songs/structures/sounds, but their instincts come from exceptionally different places. The disparity between the ways they approach their music, reveals how the push toward modern capitalist industrialism has affected how different artists and communities access and transmit those old-world icons and sounds. Furthermore, their engagement specifically with the topic of gender exposes key tactical differences. Old-time musicians, Washburn and Gellert, work within the strictures of tradition so as to remain in dialogue with their community. Welch and Case play into the experimental bent of alt.country to emotionally affect listeners in order to create discreet, personal connections between themselves and their audience. iii To the ones who listen and love me anyway iv PREFACE In the summer, Florida is so hot the home becomes some dark prison of necessary air conditioning.

What did you hear, my darling young one?” -Bob Dylan, “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,” 1963 In the midst of victorious rhetoric from the government, disturbing insight from the news media, and chaos from the protests, people heard the music of the Vietnam War era. The 1960s was known as a time of change, ranging from revised social norms to changing political stances to new popular music. Everyone seemed to have something to say about the war, musicians being no exception. The folk revival in the 1960s introduced young listeners to a different sound, one of rebellion and critical thought about their country.

As two of the world’s most vibrant and versatile musicians, neither James nor Abrams shies away from a challenge, and with The Order of Nature they’ve crafted a large-scale symphonic suite that has James’ evocative songs as its foundation. Abrams built a grand orchestral house on that foundation, and the result is an explosion of music that boldly synthesizes rock and classical while taking advantage of orchestral music’s inherently cinematic nature. Featuring unreleased new songs from James as well as re-imaginings from his solo catalog, the album will be released October 18 via Decca Gold.
