  • University of Alberta 'Indo-Jazz Fusion'
University of Alberta ‘Indo-Jazz Fusion’: Jazz and Karnatak Music in Contact by Tanya Kalmanovitch A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music Edmonton, Alberta Spring 2008 Abstract An inherently intercultural music, jazz presents a unique entry in the catalog of interactions between Indian music and the west. This dissertation is situated in a line of recent accounts that reappraise the period of Western colonial hegemony in India by tracing a complex continuum of historical and musical events over three centuries. It charts the historical routes by which jazz and Karnatak music have come into contact in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, both in India and abroad. It presents a detailed account of the history of jazz in India, and Indian music in jazz, and examines jazz’s contact with Karnatak music in three contexts—jazz pedagogy, intercultural collaboration, and the Indian diaspora in the United States—illustrating the musical, social and performative spaces in which these musics come into contact, and describing the specific musical and social practices, and political and social institutions that support this activity. Case studies in this dissertation include an educational exchange between the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program of the New School University (New York, NY) and the Brhaddhvani Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World (Chennai, India), directed by the author in December 2003 – January 2004; a 2001 collaboration between Irish jazz/traditional band Khanda and the Karnataka College of Percussion; and analyses of recent recordings by pianist Vijay Iyer, saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and drummer Ravish Momin.

  • The Musical Journey- Re-Centring Afroasia Through an Arc of the Blues
The Musical Journey- Re-Centring AfroAsia through an Arc of the Blues *Sumangala Damodaran and Ari Sitas The essential difference between cante jondo and flamenco is that the origin of the former must be sought in the primitive musical systems of India, that is, in the first manifestations of song, while the latter, a consequence of the first, cannot be said to acquire its definitive form until the eighteenth century….The former is song imbued with the mysterious colour of primordial ages; the latter is relatively modern, its emotional interest eclipsed by that of the other. Spiritual colour versus local colour: that is the profound difference…That is to say that, cante jondo, like the primitive musical systems of India, is merely a stammer, an emission, higher or lower in pitch, of the voice, a marvelous buccal undulation, that breaks out of the echoing prison of our tempered scale, will not suffer the cold rigid pentagram of our modern music, and makes the hermetic flowers of semitones open in a thousand petals. (Federico García Lorca, 1922) Lorca’s insight in his lecture on the “Deep Song” is feisty, it is right within the vein leading to the heart of musical craft; somewhat inaccurate but poignant because as a musically gifted man who could play the piano (1) and write words infused with the echoes of the Cante Jondo, he could sense the pathways of this musical journey, close to a century earlier than this exploration. We too are in search of how to make the “hermetic flowers of semitones open in a thousand petals”.

  • Karnatic Music and Christianity
Journal of Dharma 40, 1 (January-March 2015), 77-94 KARNATIC MUSIC AND CHRISTIANITY: An Ethnomusicological Approach Paul Poovathingal Abstract: Ethnomusicological approach towards Christian music in India has revealed that Christian music in India had a strong interaction with the traditional classical music of South India, i.e., Karnatic music. Protestant Churches in India had tried to adapt native music tradition into their music even before Second Vatican Council whereas Catholic Church in India made serious attempts for inculturation only after the Council. The present paper focuses on the ethnomusicological perspective of the Christian music in India and the multicultural, multireligious interaction of Karnatic music with respect to its adaptability and universality. It also deals with the structural and melodic analysis of the compositions of the leading Christian Karnatic composers of the past and the present, and the analysis of Karnatic musical forms and musical genres available in the Christian musical subcultures of South India. Keywords: Christianity, Church music, Ethnomusicology, Inculturation, Karnatic music, Musical identity, Raga, Tāļās 1. Introduction The history of Christian music in India is very complex and diverse due to various independent ethnic Christian subcultures, which are spread all over the country. South Indian Christians, North Indian Christians, Christians in the North Eastern states Dr Paul Poovathingal CMI, popularly known as singing priest of India, is the first Christian priest in the world to have a PhD in Karnatic music. He is a disciple of Padmabhushan Dr K. J. Yesudas and has performed music concert for the President of India at President’s House, New Delhi. He is the recipient of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy ‘Kalasree award’ for Karnatic music and also Senior Fellowship award for Karnatic music from the ministry of culture, Govt.

Soumya Department of History, N.S.S. College, Pandalam, PATHANAMTHITTA (KERALA) INDIA (Email: [email protected]) ARTICLE INFO : ABSTRACT Received : 19.04.2016 Studies dealing with ritualistic music and allied arts of Kerala are rare. Not much Accepted : 26.05.2016 research has gone deep into this area which cut across the periphery and superficial layers and touch the real core. An analytical study on the virtually vanishing temple KEY WORDS : art of Kerala, the Sopana Music, is really significant in this context. Their existence is greatly threatened by the process of modernisation and commercialization of life in the Kerala temples, Sopana music, Temple contemporary age and the accompanying changes in social and economic structure. art, Ritual, Performing arts At one time, Sopana music system was associated with most of the rituals and the performing arts. Yet what one sadly realises now-a-days is the fact that Sopana music is still groping in darkness and is yet to be restored to its original spirit and charm. Owing to historical reasons, the recital of this music came to be neglected and virtually discarded in most of the areas except in some temples where it was preserved as a ritual. The reasons for its setback could be many- the practitioners inability to verbalise the content and substance of their art and their inhibition to violate the rigid, protective, orthodox rules and norms intended to preserve their sanctity.
