The Disgrace Continues The image to the right is of up to 30 bags of rubbish collected by Mike Filby from 70 kms of the number one highway, north of Middleton road on the 13th and 24th of July. This section had been cleaned by Keep Australia Beautiful volunteers, on foot, inch by inch, as far as the Manjimup Shire boundary at Mersea road, North of Palgarup prior to July 3rd. These 30 bags are rubbish littered over a 21 day period. This is a disgrace more befitting a third world standard then that of a developed nation. We should be ashamed. More on page 5...

France Bans Pesticides Linked to Bee Deaths

While the European Union ruled to ban three of the five neonicotinoid pesticides linked to bee deaths – clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam – France decided to put a blanket ban on the two excluded by the EU’s ban as well, thiacloprid and acetamiprid. The ban from the European Union started on December 19th, 2018. Exceptions may be granted until July 1 2020, but only for pesticides made with acetamiprid, and only in “small amounts,” the French minister for ecological transition said. France’s ban extends to the use of all five pesticides both on outdoor crops and inside greenhouses. The move to ban the five pesticides has been hailed by beekeepers and environmentalists, but cereal and sugar beet farmers aren’t too happy about it. A report by France’s ANSES public health agency said in May that there were ‘sufficiently effective, and operational’ alternatives to the neonicotinoids used in France. Many others, including myself, believe the ban should go further. “There are pesticides all over the place.” Fabien Van Hoecke, a beekeeper in Saint-Aloué in Brittany, who lost 86 percent of his bees over the winter. While the ban was a good thing, it won’t save us, he told the AFP, predicting that as soon as these pesticides are withdrawn, they will be replaced by others. While this is true in the majority of cases involving the ban of certain pesticides, it sometimes takes baby steps to get somewhere beneficial. The use of all herbicides, pesticides and fungicides needs to be banned, and we need to start working with nature, instead of against her. It is well known that old farming practices are destroying the soil, and the planet, and only until we start learning how to farm in a way that respects the planet, will we actually be on the road to new, healthy beginnings. ~ Source: livelovefruit.com

Australian seafood Walpole Quality Meats industry steps Free taste testings up to the plate Daily in war against plastic SIA CEO Jane Lovell Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), the national peak body representing the Australian seafood industry, has taken Plastic-Free July as an opportunity to highlight the innovative ways seafood businesses are fighting the war against plastic by finding replacements, implementing change and protecting the marine environment. “We are proud to be involved in the Plastic-Free July movement,” SIA CEO Jane Lovell said. All around the country there are diverse examples of how our industry is finding ways to eradicate plastic and protect the ocean. In Victoria, there is a Bins on Boats program where commercial fishing boats are offered free wind and weather-proof bins to reduce marine pollution. In , SIA member Tassal, a Tasmanian salmon producer, has committed to recycling 100% of all hard and soft plastics through a partnership with Tasmanian plastic manufacturer Envorinex. In Western Australia, commercial fishing vessels are keeping a close look out for any ghost gear, abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear in their fisheries. They remove them if is safe to do so, and if not, they get a GPS fix and report it. In , Sydney Fish Markets were recently awarded Bronze Partner status in the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage’s Sustainability Advantage Program in recognition of developing a business case for the elimination of tenant plastic packaging. Plastic-free July is an important reminder that we all have a role to play in eliminating plastic from our marine environment. As fishers, our priority is the ocean. We advocate the health, sustainability and future of our ocean. It’s our livelihood and the future livelihood of generations to come.”
