According to the history (Information excepted from the OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK AT 9:00AM 365 DAYS A YEAR of the fair at the Washington County Fair Washington County Fair Park website) Park website, by 1937 the Agricultural and Historical Society worked out an arrangement where the county would take over operation of the fair. With the change in operation came a change in location, as the Washington County Fair was held at the Washington County Highway grounds in Slinger on Aug. 9-10, 1938. Five years later, the name of the fair was changed to the Washington County Victory Fair, as the nation was in the midst of World War II. According to Washington County Fair website, attendance ranged between 40,000 and 60,000 over the decade. “Washington County understood the limitation of the Slinger site, and in the late 40’s, it was noted that one of the major problems confronting the manage- ment of the Fair was the inadequate parking space for cars. Many exhibits had to be placed in tents due to lack of space,” the fair history states. The fair held its 100th anniversary at the Slinger site in 1958 and improve- ments were made to accommodate the fair at the Highway Grounds site. In 1961, funds were made available for a new water main. Also during the decade, barns were painted, the Slinger Fire Department erected a permanent bever- age stand and 50 park benches bought at a cost of $297. By 1978, “serious consideration was given” to the idea of relocating the fair to the Gundrum Farm near Hwys. E and J, just south of Slinger. However, the county did not complete the plans due to budget restrictions, and the site is now the location of Heritage Trail County Park.
