This is thirteenth occasion for Leahy Park to host a county senior football final. I trust there will be nothing unlucky about it! I shou ld like to use the occasion to thank our caretaker, Joe Graham, plus the participants in OLlr FAS scheme, for preparing the field for today. I want to compliment all our members, under the organisation of our esteemro runai, Mattie Finnerty, for the day's arrangements. I should also like to thank Seamus King for his work in producing the match programme. In doing so I want to thank very sincerely the many businesses, who advertised in the programme. My thanks to members of the juvenile club for selling the programme, and to our excellent ladies committee for loaking after the ca tering. Donie Shanahan Co. What level have you refereed in i.e. schools, inter-firms, club (Senior, Under-Age etc), inter-county etc. All levels. W hat is the one rule you would change given the chance? Pick Up. What was your funniest moment as a referee? The funniest moment when I look back was the Charlie Redmond incident. Why did you get involved as a referee? I was asked by my club to attend a Juvenile refereeing course in 1976 - the rest is history Comment: The best referees are those who never refereed a match of any kind, which is why I take all their critical comments to heart. SENIOR FOOTBAll FINALS AT CASHEl Since the development of Leahy Park in the early 1950s, the venue has played host to twelve finals. Usually when Loughmore-Castleiney meets a South team in the final Cashel becomes the venue. The following is a list of the finals played to date. 1955: Loughmore-Castleiney 3-8 Arravale Rovers 0-6 1957: Fethard 2-4 loughmore-Castleiney 1-4 1960: Thurles Crakes 1-9 Cion mel Commercials 0-9 1967: Cion mel Commercials 2-9 Lattin-Cullen 0-8 1974: Ardfinnan 1-6 Fethard 1-4 1983: Loughmore-Castleiney 0-8 Fel hard 1-4 1985: Arravale Rovers 0-8 Loughmore-Castleiney 1-5 Replay: Arravale Rovers 1-5 loughmore-Castleiney 1-3 '987: loughmore-Castleiney 2-8 Commercials 2-8 (fhe replay was played at Holycross) 1990: Clonmel Commercials 3-10 Loughmore-Castleiney 1-5 1992: loughmore-Caslleiney 0-10 Fethard 0-10 Replay: Loughmore-Castleiney 1-9 Fethard 0-10 1994: Clonmel Commercials 0-10 loughmore-Caslleiney 1-6. On the occasion of the 1987 final, which was the centenary of the first playing of the county championship, the legendary Bill Ryan 'Laha' threw in the ball for the final. It was in November and fields were very wet. There was lillie hdru core inside the entrance to Leahy Park and the place was very muddy. Bill .arri ved and his driver parked inside the gate. When Bill stepped out of the car; no' iced his black shoes, blackened and shining to army standard, as he stepped into the mud. He walked into a muddy field and threw in the ball. By the time he left the shoes were unrecognisable. 2004: loughmore Castleiney 0-9 Moyle Rovers 0-6. Last year Loughmore-Castleieny returned to the winners enclosure after thirteen years in the w ilderness, with a three-point victory over Moyle Rovers. page 3 Wishes To Loughmore • Castleinev In Today's Final From Stvle Man Menswear, Bovswear and Ladieswear Westgate, Thurles, Co. A graduale in Civil Engineering from U.C.C, he played both Sigerson and Fitzgibbon with the college and is equally adept at hurling and football, revea ling no preference for either game. Neither is he lied 10 any particular part of the field, having played as a wing-forward earlier in the year, and as a wingback latterly. He has played minor and under-21 for the county in hurling and football, and at sen ior level in the former, having been selected for five National League games in 2004. Probably his greatest hurling claim 10 fame was keeping Setanla 0 hAilpfn sco reless in the under-21 Munster final. His achievements include an under-21 Munster hurling medal, an under-16 Nenagh Co-Op medal, an All-Ireland Freshe rs medal with U.c.c., two South minor A football medals, a South B under-2 1 hurling meda l, and five South intermediate medal s. He al so played with Ireland in under-17 Compromise Rules. A versatile and able player, he is looking forward to today's final and believes that Ardfinnan's improved performances of late, will help them to victory for the first time since 1974. DOMINI C BRENNAN Dominic is twenty-nine years of age and is following in his father's (Kevin) footsteps, who kepi goal for the dub with distindion for many years. He could certainly be described as the joker of the pack. A teacher in Killarney, Dominic holds many awards with the club and the schools. One will never forgel his outstanding display against Ardfinnan in the winning of the 1990 under-14 county football fina l, when a string of excellent saves was the kernel of victory for Loughmore-Castleiney. He went on from there to win under-21 and senior county titles, and would dearly love to accept the O'Dwyer Cup thi s afternoon for returning to his native wash pen. He played with the county junior foot bailers this year. WELCOME FROM CASHEl CHA IRMA N On behalf of Cashel King Cormac's Club I should like to welcome all our patrons 10 Leahy Park today. • Tipperary News Part 6
Clonmel Advertiser. 20-4-1822 We regret having to mention a cruel and barbarous murder, attended with circumstances of great audacity, that has taken place on the borders of Tipperary and Kilkenny. A farmer of the name of Morris, at Killemry, near Nine-Mile-House, having become obnoxious to the public disturbers, received a threatening notice some short time back, he having lately come to reside there. On Wednesday night last a cow of his was driven into the bog, where she perished; on Thursday morning he sent two servants, a male and female, to the bog, the male servant to skin the cow and the female to assist him; but while the woman went for a pail of water, three ruffians came, and each of them discharged their arms at him, and lodged several balls and slugs in his body, and then went off. This occurred about midday. No one dared to interfere, either for the prevention of this crime, or to follow in pursuit of the murderers. The sufferer was quite a youth, and had committed no offence, even against the banditti, but that of doing his master’s business. Clonmel Advertiser 24-8-1835 Last Saturday, being the fair day at Carrick-on-Suir, and also a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church, an immense assemblage of the peasantry poured into the town at an early hour from all directions of the surrounding country. The show of cattle was was by no means inferior-but the only disposable commodity , for which a brisk demand appeared evidently conspicuous, was for Feehans brown stout.

South Tipperary County Development Plan 2009-2015. CHAPTER 2: CURRENT TRENDS 2.0 Introduction This chapter examines a range of statistics in order to set out the baseline data, which has been considered during the formulation of the policies and objectives contained in the County Development Plan. Trends examined relate to existing and projected population, demographic profiles, employment and education. 2.1 Population The population of South Tipperary exceeded 83,000 in 2006 for the first time since 1926. This increase has been largely influenced by inward net migration amounting to 7,236 persons and representing 8.7% of the county population. The population growth for the county over the period 2002-2006 was 5.2% and the population of South Tipperary now accounts for 18% of the total for the South East Region. From Table 2.1 the growth rate of South Tipperary, in Table 2.1 Census Results 2002 - 2006 comparison with other south east counties, does not appear remarkable Increase but it is recognised that a proportion of Area 2002 2006 Actual % the growth attributed to the other South counties within the region is influenced Tipperary 79,121 83,221 4,100 5.2 by commuting patterns to Dublin and 2 Cork. Waterford 101,546 107,961 6,415 6.3 Carlow 46,014 50,349 4,335 9.4 The population growth of 5.2% from Kilkenny 80,339 87,558 7,219 9 2002-2006 in South Tipperary is viewed Wexford 116,596 131,749 15,153 13 positively and indicative of likely South East sustained population growth in future Region 423,616 460,838 37,222 8.8 periods.

Girls from the parish are active participants in camogie and ladies football. For the main part this has been with clubs from the neighbouring parishes. There was an active ladies football club in the parish from 1975 to 1979. During this time they won 5 County Senior Titles and a Munster Club title in 1978 together with a number of underage successes. Camogie is the main sport at present with a number of the players achieving success at club school and inter county levels. This booklet sets out what the club's 5 year plan committee deem to be the crucial projects for completion over the next five years, to build on the work already done by members and deceased members down through the years in promoting Gaelic Games in our parish. The club will be looking for a positive contribution from all our members to help achieve the goals set out in the plan. It is important that these projects are completed so that Loughmore Castleiney GAA Club will continue to serve the players, members and supporters from our parish for many years into the future.
