Co. Senior Football Final Match Programme 2005

WELCOME On behalf of Cashel King Cormac's Club I should like to welcome all our patrons to Leahy Park today. This is thirteenth occasion for Leahy Park to host a county senior football final. I trust there will be nothing unlucky about it! I shou ld like to use the occasion to thank our caretaker, Joe Graham, plus the participants in OLlr FAS scheme, for preparing the field for today.

I want to compliment all our members, under the organisation of our esteemro runai, Mattie Finnerty, for the day's arrangements. I should also like to thank Seamus King for his work in producing the match programme. In doing so I want to thank very sincerely the many businesses, who advertised in the programme. My thanks to members of the juvenile club for selling the programme, and to our excellent ladies committee for loaking after the ca tering. Donie Shanahan Co. Chairman

SENIOR FOOTBAll FINALS AT CASHEl Since the development of Leahy Park in the early 1950s, the venue has played host to twelve finals. Usually when Loughmore-Castleiney meets a South team in the final Cashel becomes the venue. The following is a list of the finals played to date. 1955: Loughmore-Castleiney 3-8 Arravale Rovers 0-6 1957: Fethard 2-4 loughmore-Castleiney 1-4 1960: Crakes 1-9 Cion mel Commercials 0-9 1967: Cion mel Commercials 2-9 Lattin-Cullen 0-8 1974: Ardfinnan 1-6 Fethard 1-4 1983: Loughmore-Castleiney 0-8 Fel hard 1-4 1985: Arravale Rovers 0-8 Loughmore-Castleiney 1-5 Replay: Arravale Rovers 1-5 loughmore-Castleiney 1-3 '987: loughmore-Castleiney 2-8 Commercials 2-8 (fhe replay was played at ) 1990: Commercials 3-10 Loughmore-Castleiney 1-5 1992: loughmore-Caslleiney 0-10 Fethard 0-10 Replay: Loughmore-Castleiney 1-9 Fethard 0-10 1994: Clonmel Commercials 0-10 loughmore-Caslleiney 1-6. On the occasion of the 1987 final, which was the centenary of the first playing of the county championship, the legendary Bill Ryan 'Laha' threw in the ball for the final. It was in November and fields were very wet. There was lillie hdru core inside the entrance to Leahy Park and the place was very muddy. Bill .arri ved and his driver parked inside the gate. When Bill stepped out of the car; no' iced his black shoes, blackened and shining to army standard, as he stepped into the mud. He walked into a muddy field and threw in the ball. By the time he left the shoes were unrecognisable. 2004: loughmore Castleiney 0-9 Moyle Rovers 0-6. Last year Loughmore-Castleieny returned to the winners enclosure after thirteen years in the w ilderness, with a three-point victory over Moyle Rovers. page 3 Wishes To Loughmore • Castleinev In Today's Final From Stvle Man Menswear, Bovswear and Ladieswear

page 4 THE CAPTAINS MICHAEL PHELAN Michael Phelan (Ardfinnan) has the honour of captaining his side at the young age of 23 years. A graduale in Civil Engineering from U.C.C, he played both Sigerson and Fitzgibbon with the college and is equally adept at and football, revea ling no preference for either game. Neither is he lied 10 any particular part of the field, having played as a wing-forward earlier in the year, and as a wingback latterly. He has played minor and under-21 for the county in hurling and football, and at sen ior level in the former, having been selected for five National League games in 2004. Probably his greatest hurling claim 10 fame was keeping Setanla 0 hAilpfn sco reless in the under-21 Munster final. His achievements include an under-21 Munster hurling medal, an under-16 Co-Op medal, an All-Ireland Freshe rs medal with U.c.c., two South minor A football medals, a South B under-2 1 hurling meda l, and five South intermediate medal s. He al so played with Ireland in under-17 Compromise Rules. A versatile and able player, he is looking forward to today's final and believes that Ardfinnan's improved performances of late, will help them to victory for the first time since 1974.

DOMINI C BRENNAN Dominic is twenty-nine years of age and is following in his father's (Kevin) footsteps, who kepi goal for the dub with distindion for many years. He could certainly be described as the joker of the pack. A teacher in Killarney, Dominic holds many awards with the club and the schools. One will never forgel his outstanding display against Ardfinnan in the winning of the 1990 under-14 county football fina l, when a string of excellent saves was the kernel of victory for Loughmore-Castleiney. He went on from there to win under-21 and senior county titles, and would dearly love to accept the O'Dwyer Cup thi s afternoon for returning to his native wash pen. He played with the county junior foot bailers this year.

page 6 AROFINNAN G.A.A CLUB The Ardfinnan C.A.A Club dates back to 1910 but it wasn't till 1927 when they reached their first South senior football tinal where they were defeated by Carrick on-Suir. tn 1934 Ardfinnan won their tirst South and county title at junior level and followed with county senior titles in 1935 and 1939. Ardfinnan were regraded back to junior and in 1954 won the county junior title, a title that has not been won by the club since. The year after in 1955 Ardfinnan participated in the senior championship and have done so since that year. The 1960s will always be remembered in history as Ardfinnan's golden era, during this period Ardfinnan won the county senior ti tle three times 1962, 1963 & 1964, the South senior title five times, including the famous four-in-a-row from 1961 10 1964 and 196B. People still talk about the sixties and players like the great , the Savages Pa tsy and Pete, the Keating brothers Dick and John, Stephen McCormack, Alfie McDermott, John James Lonergan, Patsy Myles and later in the sixties, his brother liam Myles, John Cummins, Patsy Ryan, Jim Healy and Pat Carrol!. The club went on to win the county title in 1970 and 1974, which is our last county title. In all the club has won seven county titles 1935, 1939, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1970,1974, and nine South senior titles; Throughout the years the club has gone from strength to strength with the opening of our own G.A.A Grounds in May 1988 and is now noted as one of the finest club grounds in Tipperary. In 2000 as we moved to a new millennium Ardfinnan were honoured by past players, Pakie Brennan. who was honoured by being seleded on the Munster Millennium team, and Michael Babs Keating, who was selected as Tipperary Footballer of the Millennium. The second last time Ardfinnan contested a county senior football final was back in 1998 when we were defeated by the then reigning South champions, Moyle Rovers. The last time Ardfinnan contested the final was two years ago against neighbours, . In that championship they beat loughmore-Castleiney by 2-8 to 0-6 in the quarter-final at Cashel. They went on to account for Gal tee Rovers by I -8 to 0-7 in the semi-final at Clonmel. The final against Cahir was also played at Cion mel on October 19. It wasn't a great game, and no goals were scored. Cahir led by 0·5 to 0-1 at the interval, having played against the breeze, but any notion that vidory would be easy was dispelled by a fine display by Ardfinnan in the second half. In the end only three points separated the sides on a scoreline of Cahir 0-7 Ard(jnnan 0-4. A victory today over Loughmore-Castleiney would bridge a gap of thirty-one years since we last took home the county cup. A win today would be just reward for everyone associated with the club, the management, the players and most of all the loyal supporters who travelled the county in search of success all those years. pa",,8 LOUGHMQRE·CASTLEINEY GAA. CLUB Twelve months ago the club won the county senior football title following a lapse of twelve years. Today we return 10 Leahy Park, Cashel in an attempt to win our twelfth county tille, and to put senior county tilles back to back for the first lime ever. Down the years certain questions are posed aboullhe Loughmore-Castleiney team, and about the dedication and camaraderie that are so much a part of their make-up. Perhaps growing up together through primary school etc., having a very good juvenile structure with huge success, culminating in minor, under·21, and right up to senior success, has been some of the reason. To be equally successful in both codes meant that the same crop of players would in general be playing competitively from february to December each year, thus creating a great bond between all players. Another and possibly the greatest factor of all is the large number of family relatives on the club teams. Today's team is no exception. We have Sweeney brothers, Ormonds, Brennans, McGraths, Kennedys and Stapletons. Ciaran and David McGrath have their uncle, Pat, on the bench tD-day. The Brennan brothers are sons of Eamonn and nephews of Fr. Peter, the manager of the leam. Pat McGrath and Ned Ryan are first cousi'ns, as they are to Pat Treacy, a selector to-day. The Sweeney brothers are sons of Eamonn and nephews of Jimmy, the selector and trainer of the team. Micheal Webster is son of Eddie of county and Railway Cup fame. Eddie played at full-back when both of to-day's clubs met in the 1973 final. Micheal is currently nominated for an AII-Slar award in hurling. Paul Ormond is the holder of an All-Ireland junior football medal, and a Munster minor football medal. Holding All-Ireland senior medals are Noel Ryan, , the injured , and Pat McGrath. Paul Ormond's injury worries continue as he is currently nursing a hand injury from the county semi-final. Taday's sub goalkeeper, Thomas Maher, is son of Mick, who played in goal on the 1973 winning team. Other links are Michael Webster, Derek Browne and Brendan Healy. Pat McGrath id the holder of twenty-four Mid senior football titles and five county senior football titles. Thineen of to-day's panel were members of our county under-21 football winning side, who retained their county title earlier in the year. Although we had no p!Jyer on the county senior foolballteam, thai had such a great win in the Tommy Murphy Cup recently, the club had Jim Healy as a selector, and Jonathon Cullen is foot!}.111 board P.R.O. All the members of today's team have worn the county jersey at various levels in hurling and football. Loughmore-Caslleiney Officers: President: Fr. Mullaney. Cha irman: Jonathon Cullen. page 16 ARDFINNAN· SEN IOR FOOTBAll CHAMPIONS 1962·1963·1964

Ardfinnan senior footballers were threatening for a couple of years before they made their breakthrough in , 962. Two years beforehand they qualified {or the South final, only to be heavily beaten by Clonmel Commercials. In 1961 the sides mel again in the final bUllhe result was reversed: Ardfinnan defeated their rivals convincingly by 4-9 to 2-4, to take their first divisional final in twenty-two years. On that occasion they had also beaten Commercials and went on to win the county final against a West selected. They didn't have such success in 1961, losing out to a North combination, SI. Flannan's in the final. The year 1962 was to be the start of a period of unrivalled success in the history of the club. They defeated Burncourt-Clogheen by '-12 to 1-3 in the South final at Clonmel on September 9. They had a close con test with Galtee Rovers in the county semi-final, which was played at Clonmel on September 16. There was only a point between the sides on a 1-6 to , -5 scorelin e: They won their first county final since 1939 when they beat Thurles Crakes by 4-' , to 1-6 at Thu rl es on October 7. Ardfinnan led by 2-8 to 0-4 at the interval, and never looked to be in danger. The game was played before the Oireachtas semi-final between Tipperary and Kilkenny. The Ardfinnan team lined out as follows: Paddy Quinn, Michael Moore, Ton y Finn, Alfie McDermott, John J. Lonergan (Capt), Dick Keating, John Byrne, Patsy Myles, Bi lly Moloney, Pete Savage, Michael 'Babs' Keating, Stephen McCormack, Patsy Savage, John Keating, Michael Byrne. Referee: Sean Twomey (Arravale Rovers). In the 1963 championship Ardfinnan had a convincing win over Fethard in the Sou th final, played at Clonmel on September 15. They won by 2-8 to 1-2. They were too good for the North representatives, SI. Flannan's in the county semi-final, defeating them by '-'0 to 0-3 at Thurles on October 13. The final was played at Templemore on November 3. Ardfinnan retained their title with a 1-9 to 1-2 victory over Templemore. They led by 1-5 to nil at half-time. One unusual aspect of the game was that it featured brothers on opposite sides. Dick Keating played for Ardfinnan, while his brother, Benny, turned out for Templemore. The captain of the victorious Ardfinnan team received not only the O 'Dwyer Cu p, but a second troph y as well. The previous August the county board were presented with a beautiful and artistic trophy by John Fogarty, President of the Tipperary Association of New York. It was intended by the donors to be an incentive to the efforts at restoring Tipperary football to its previous prominence. Ardfinnan: Paddy Quinn, luke Hally, Michael Moore, Alfie McDermott, John

pabO(! 17 J. lonergan, Dick Keating (capt.), Patsy Myles, Stephen McCormack, Billy Moloney, Pete Savage, John Keating, Michael Byrne, Patsy Savage, Michael 'Babs' Keating, Patrick O'Brien. Ardfinnan made it three·in-a·row in 1964. They had a close--run contest with Cion mel Commercials at Clonmel on September 20, before winning the South final by 1·11 to 2~7. Ardfinnan defeated Templemore by 1~10 to 0-8 in the coun ty sem i-final, played at Thurles on October 25. The county final was played at the same venue on November 8 and resu lted in a convincing win for Ardfinnan. They beat SI. Flannan's by 5-10 to 3~3. They were the easiest of winners over a disjointed and disappointing North selection, after leading by 4-5 to 1·1 at the interval. Ardfinnan: James Moran, John J. lonergan, Michael Moore, Alfie McDermott, Patsy Ryan, Dick Keating, Michael Byrne, Billy Moloney, Stephen McCormack, Pete Savage (0-4), Michael 'Babs' Keating (2~2), Patrick O 'Brien (0~ 1 ), Patsy Savage ( 1~2 ), John Keating (0-2), Tom Ryan (0-1). Subs: John Ryan and Ed O'Dwyer. Referee: Billy Sweeney (Moyne--Templetuohy) The club championship was inaugurated in the same year. However, the firsl matches weren't played until 1965. Ardfinnan had a bye to the Munster semi-final, and played Cooraclare at Kilrush on April 25. The match ended in a draw, 1·7 each, and Ardfinnan had hopes of success in the replay at Clonmel on July 4. However, they gave a disappointing performance and were beaten by 0-10 to 1-4. Perhaps it renected the decline in thi s great team. They failed to qualify for the South final in 1965, and they weren't to return to the county winner's enclosure until 1970. Other County Final Victories Ardfinnan won their seventh and last cou nty final in 1974. Significantly, Thurles Sarsfields won their last - until this year - senior hurling championship in the same year. Will the victory of Sarsfields last Sunday week be a good omen for Ardfinnan? The 1974 county final was played in Cashel also, and the date was October 20. The county championship was played on an open draw system that year, and lattin-Cullen, Fethard and qualified for the se mi~final s with Ardfinnan. The two South teams came through for the final. Ardfinnan led by ' ·2 to 0-4 at the interval. Fethard dominated the third quarter, but failed to sco re, and Ardfinnan took their seventh title by 1~6 to 1-4. They lost to Doonbeg in the Munster Club championshi p. Ardfinnan won the first of their seven titles in , 93 5. The final wasn't actually played until AprilS, 1936. They beat Fethard in the Soulh final by 1~9 to 2~4 on OClober 20, and had to wail over five months for the final. This was played at Clonmel and Ardfinnan won eaSily by 3-5 10 Q... 1 for Templemore. p,lge 18

They had difficulty getting out of the South, taking three games to defeat Cion mel Commercials by 1-3 to 0-1. The final didn'ltake place until October 1940, and Ardfinnan defeated a West selected by '-3 to 1- 1. Ardfinnan didn't figure again until the sixties when they won the historic th ree in-a-row. The period 1965 and 1973 th..1t followed was one in which the club lost much, much more than they won. In the nineteen finals played during these yea rs Ardfinnan qualified for seven of them but won only one! The roll of honour shows six defeats. In 1966 they lost by a poinlto Clonmel Commercials, 2-6 to 1-8. In 1968 they lost by a point to , 1-11 to 2-7. In 1969 they lost by two goals to Clonmel Commercials, 2-13 to 0-13. Having reversed the result in the 1970 final, they were then to lose three more in a row! In 1971 they were defeated by Commercia ls, 2-8 to 1-9. They were two points behind Kilsheelan, '-9 to 1-7, when the fina l whistle sounded in 1972, and they suffered their heaviest defeat in these years in 1973, when they went under to Loughmore-Castleiney by 2-10 to 0-7. The one bright light during these depressing years was the victory in , 970. The open draw was in operation and the four teams to emerge for the semi-finals were from the South. Commercials defeated Moyle Rovers by 1-10 to 0-7, and Ardfinnan defeated Fethard by 2-12 to 2-7. The final was played at Cion mel on November 8 and resulted in a win for Ardfinnan by 1-11 to 2-2. They took the lead in the third minute and led by "1-8 to , -0 at the inteNal, after playing with the w ind. The game was marred by unseemly conduct n the sidelines. Referee John Moloney had a difficull task and sent Iwo players to the line in the second half. It was an important victory for Ardfinnan, after losing three In-a-row.
