LAURISILVA OF MADEIRA PORTUGAL The Laurisilva of Madeira is the largest surviving relict of a virtually extinct laurel forest type once widespread in Europe. It is still 90% primary forest and is a centre of plant diversity, containing a unique suite of rare and relict plants and animals, especially endemic bryophytes, ferns, vascular plants, animals such as the Madeiran long-toed pigeon and a very rich invertebrate fauna. COUNTRY Portugal NAME Laurisilva of Madeira NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE SITE 1999: Inscribed on the World Heritage List under Natural Criteria ix and x. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE The UNESCO World Heritage Committee adopted the following Statement of Outstanding Universal Value at the time of inscription: Brief Synthesis The Laurisilva of Madeira, within the Parque Natural da Madeira (Madeira Natural Park) conserves the largest surviving area of primary laurel forest or "laurisilva", a vegetation type that is now confined to the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. These forests display a wealth of ecological niches, intact ecosystem processes, and play a predominant role in maintaining the hydrological balance on the Island of Madeira. The property has great importance for biodiversity conservation with at least 76 vascular plant species endemic to Madeira occurring in the property, together with a high number of endemic invertebrates and two endemic birds including the emblematic Madeiran Laurel Pigeon. Criterion (ix): The Laurisilva of Madeira is an outstanding relict of a previously widespread laurel forest type, which covered much of Southern Europe 15-40 million years ago. The forest of the property completely covers a series of very steep, V-shaped valleys leading from the plateau and east-west ridge in the centre of the island to the north coast. -

Datos ecológicos de isópodos (Crustacea: Oniscidea) en bosques de laurisilva de las islas canarias occidentales. VIERAEA 33: 41-50. RESUMEN: Se examinó la fauna de isópodos en diferentes bosques de laurisilva de La Gomera, El Hierro y La Palma (Canarias Occidentales), con datos obtenidos de trampas pitfall y muestras de suelo, citándose un total de 11 especies. Las comunidades de especies de bosques de La Gomera y El Hierro por una parte, y las de La Palma por otra, fueron muy diferentes a pesar de la similitud de la estructura forestal, la vegetación arbórea y las condiciones climáticas en las tres islas. La especie nativa Porcellio meridionalis es dominante en La Gomera y El Hierro, y alcanza su mayor abundancia en localidades frescas y húmedas por encima de 1200 m s.n.m. En todas las localidades forestales de La Palma fue siempre dominante Armadillidium vulgare, a menudo acompañada por pequeños Trichoniscidae endogeos. Cinco de las especies mencionadas han sido introducidas en las islas por el hombre en fechas históricas. Esas especies invasoras dominan cuantitativamente en muchos sitios del estudio, con una media en la proporción de especímenes invasivos:nativos de 3,1:1 en trampas pitfall, y de 1,1:1 en muestras de suelo. -

RESUMEN: Se realiza el estudio taxonómico del género Rhamnus L. en las Islas Canarias, donde está representado por tres especies: R. crenulata Ait., R. glandulosa Ait. y R. integrifolia DC. Se incluye una clave taxonómica, así como la descripción, tipifica ción, distribución y ecología de las especies. Palabras clave: Rhamnus, taxonomía, corología, ecología, Islas Canarias. SUMMARY: A taxonomic study has been undertaken of the genus Rhamnus L. in the Canary Islands. Three species: R. crenulata Ait., R. glandulosa Ait. and R. integrifo lia DC. are studied. A taxonomic key, full description, tipification, distribution and ecolo gical data are presented for each species. Keywords: Rhamnus, taxonomy, chorology, ecology, Canary Islands. INTRODUCCIÓN El género Rhamnus L. está representado en las Islas Canarias por tres especies, que de acuerdo con la clasificación infragenérica propuesta por TUTIN (1968), quedan englobadas en la sect. Rhamnus (R. crenulata Ait.) y en la sect. Alaternus (Miller) DC. (R. glandulosa Ait. y R. integrifolia DC). R. glandulosa Ait. se encuentra también en Madeira; las otras dos especies son endemismos canarios. R. alaternus L., citado por HANSEN & SUNDING (1985), se ha introducido como ornamental recientemente en Gran Canaria, donde su presencia es esporádica. En este trabajo se propone una clave para determinar las tres especies, se hace una descripción morfológica detallada de las mismas y se lleva a cabo su tipificación, com plementándose el estudio con datos corológicos, ecológicos e iconográficos. -

New records of lichens and lichenicolous fungi from La Gomera (Canary Islands, Spain), including the new species: Usnea boomiana P. Clerc Pieter P. New records of lichens and lichenicolous fungi from La Gomera (Canary Islands, Spain), including the new species: Usnea boomiana P. Clerc. Candollea 70: 165-177. In English, English abstract. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/c2015v702a1 Lichens and lichenicolous fungi are very diverse in the Canary Islands but the flora is still poorly known despite numerous recent publications. For this reason, two field trips were undertaken in 2011 in order to study the lichen flora of La Gomera (western Canary Islands). About 1000 specimens were collected in the different habitats of the island. In addition, c. 200 specimens collected in 1986, and c. 60 specimens from the Oslo herbarium (O) were studied. As a result, an annotated list of 107 newly recorded lichens and lichenicolous fungi from La Gomera is presented. Terricolous, saxicolous, as well as corticolous species are included. Further notes are given for 17 taxa that are new for the Canary Islands. Hypotrachyna meyeri (Zahlbr.) Streim. is new to Macaronesia. In addition, one species is newly described in the genus Usnea Dill. ex Adans., Usnea boomiana P. Clerc characterized notably by large and convex soralia and by the presence of caperatic acid in the medulla. G6mez-Campo Introduction One of the most basic tools needed to confront the 10ss of biodiversity on our planet is infonnation. Once priorities are set for the species where the danger of extinction is most imminent, conservation planmakers and managers need infonnation on the biology of those species and their habitats in order to adopt appropriate action measures. In many cases, such infonnation already exists dispersed in different institutions. However, it is not always easily available due to the large number of disciplines involved and the diverse character of the institutions concemed with conservation activities. At the VI OPTIMA Meeting in Delphi (Greece) in 1989, the session of the OPTIMA Commission for the Conservation of Plant Resources agreed that the Commission should be involved in the collection of data on current and past research on the biology of threatened plants of the Mediterranean Basin and Macaronesia. Four years later, at the VII OPTIMA Meeting in Borovetz (Bulgaria), a preliminary draft containing data on 201 species was presented. Further infonnation on these and other species has been added to obtain the present edition. The main objectives in this project are to: l . Elaborate a list of threatened plant species of the Mediterranean Basin and Macaronesia subjected to some type of biological study. 2. Provide infonnation on research teams that work with threatened plant species in specific areas of biological study. 3. Facilitate communication among research teams that study threatened plant species belonging to a particular taxonomic group. -
