Cal Anderson

Ms 53

Biography Born in on May 2, 1948, Cal Anderson died of complications from AIDS, August 4, 1995. He lived in the Seattle area all his life and was a graduate of Foster High School in Tukwila. Always involved in public service, Cal was Administrative Aide to Seattle Councilmember George Benson and Appointments Secretary to Seattle Mayor Charles Royer.

Appointed to the state House of Representatives in November 1987 by the 43rd precinct Democrats and the King County Council when Representative Janice Niemi filled the state Senate seat vacated by Jim McDermott, Cal was primary sponsor of far reaching legislation to bar discrimination based on sexual orientation. In 1993, he cosponsored the malicious harassment law which passed the legislature. It provided for punishment of crimes motivated by bias without infringing freedom of speech and added gender and sexual orientation to the protected categories. The civil rights bill he sponsored in the 1994 legislature passed the House and fell just one vote short of support of passage in the Senate. Cal worked hard, in 1994, to defeat two anti-Gay initiative drives that would have mandated discrimination against Gays and Lesbians, and he was one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit that challenged the initiatives’ constitutionality. In 1994, Cal ran for Janice Niemi’s open Senate seat and won.

As Washington state’s first openly Gay legislator, Cal Anderson was far from being a one issue person. Working persistently and effectively for all his constituents, Cal labored for campaign finance reform, regulatory reform, motor-voter registration, military issues, environmental protection, and open access to government documents. He introduced many bills related to AIDS and AIDS funding.

Scope and Content: The Cal Anderson papers cover the years 1987-1997. The records are divided into six record series: Constituent File, Subject File, Chronological File, Questionnaires, Miscellaneous Items, and Awards.

The Constituent Files are arranged alphabetically and cover the years, 1988-1991. This series consists of correspondence between Cal Anderson and his constituency.

The Subject File is arranged alphabetically and dates from 1987-1995. The series shows the different issues, bills, and organizations in which Cal Anderson had an interest, such as Gay and Lesbian civil rights, hate mail, gun rights, and immigrations. Some folders contain a document listing created by Anderson’s office.

Chronological Files contain the results of research requested by Anderson regarding the history of Gay rights legislation relating to House Bill 1443 and range from 1977 - 1995. Records include the text of bills, Washington State Congressional directories, articles, and reports.

Questionnaires are arranged alphabetically and date from 1988-1994. The folders are questionnaires and correspondence sent by different organizations asking Anderson for his views on specific issues such as abortion rights, gun control, the right of unions to strike, or education. The correspondence also includes letter of endorsement for Anderson by some of the organizations after review of his questionnaire answers.

Miscellaneous Items include questionnaires for Edward Murray, Anderson’s chosen successor, a park prospectus, and photographs.

Awards are some of the awards given to Anderson throughout his legislative career and posthumously.
