For department stores (non-consolidated), operating profit plunged 56.3% YoY to W14.3bn. The duty-free division posted an operating loss of W37bn (turning to loss YoY). The results missed our estimates and the consensus, hurt by: 1) sluggish department store earnings due to sales mix deterioration; and 2) continued weakness at the duty-free division. In the department store division, the apparel/accessories segments have been slow to recover due to the rapid shift to online shopping amid the lingering impact of COVID-19. Additional negatives to be 2Q20 marked a bottom limited The pandemic weighed on all of Shinsegae’s businesses in 1H20, not just the department store and duty-free divisions. That said, we believe additional negatives are limited. Monthly same-store sales growth at department stores has recovered swiftly (to approximately 9% currently). Considering additional rent cuts for the Terminal 1 airport location (i.e., the temporary introduction of variable rent payments linked to sales), we expect the duty-free division to improve meaningfully in line with the recovery of revenue. Valuation and recommendation Lower TP to W290,000 (from W360,000) We revised down our 2021 EPS estimate by 5.1%, reflecting the decline in the value of Shinsegae’s stakes in subsidiaries (e.g., Shinsegae International [031430 KS/CP: W158,000]). -

By enshrining our profound conviction and commitment that offi- cial statistics have to adhere to well-defined professional and scientific standards, they define us as a professional community, reaching across political, economic and cultural borders. They have stood the test of time and remain as relevant today as they were when they were first adopted over twenty years ago. In an appropriate recognition of their significance for all societies, who aspire to shape their own fates in an informed manner, the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics were adopted on 29 January 2014 at the highest political level as a General Assembly resolution (A/RES/68/261). 2014 ESG Integrated Ratings of public companies in Korea Korea Corporate Governance Service(KCGS) annouced 2014 ESG ratings for public companies in Korea on Aug 13. With the ESG ratings, investors may figure out the level of ESG risks that companies face and use them in making investment decision. KCGS provides four ratings for each company which consist of Environmental, Social, Governance and Integrated rating. ESG ratings by KCGS are graded into seven levels: S, A+, A, B+, B, C, D. 'S' rating means that a company has all the system and practices that the code of best practices requires and there hardly exists a possibility of damaging shareholder value due to ESG risks. 'D' rating means that there is a high possibility of damaging shareholder value due to ESG risks. Morgan and the Money Trust Lesson Author Mary Fuchs Standards and Benchmarks (see page 47) Lesson Description The Panic of 1907 was a financial crisis set off by a series of bad banking decisions and a frenzy of withdrawals caused by public distrust of the banking system. J.P. Morgan, along with other wealthy Wall Street bankers, loaned their own funds to save the coun- try from a severe financial crisis. But what happens when a single man, or small group of men, have the power to control the finances of a country? In this lesson, students will learn about the Panic of 1907 and the measures Morgan used to finance and save the major banks and trust companies. Students will also practice close reading to analyze texts from the Pujo hearings, newspapers, and reactionary articles to develop an evidence- based argument about whether or not a money trust—a Morgan-led cartel—existed. Heejin Park, Hanyang University, South Korea Jinsoo Kim, Hanyang University, South Korea Mihye Ha, Hanyang University, South Korea Sambock Park, Hanyang University, South Korea ABSTRACT Based on a sample of Korean firms listed on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ from 2001 to 2011, we examined whether the affiliation of a firm with a Chaebol group affects the sensitivity of stock prices to earnings surprises. We found that the market response to positive (negative) earnings surprises is more positive (negative) for Chaebol firms than for non-Chaebol firms. In addition, we investigated how intra-group transactions affect the ERCs of Chaebol firms by comparing with those of non-Chaebol firms. Our results show that the intra-group transactions of Chaebol firms are positively related to ERCs under both positive and negative earnings surprises. However, we did not find the same results from the analyses of non-Chaebol firms. Keywords: Chaebol Firms; Earnings Response Coefficient (ERC); Earnings Surprises; KOSPI; KOSDAQ 1. INTRODUCTION he aim of this study is to examine how differently the market reacts to earnings surprises of Chaebol firms compared to those of non-Chaebol firms. Although there is no official definition of Chaebol, T firms are perceived as Chaebol if they consist of a large group and operate in many different industries, maintain substantial business ties with other firms in their group, and are controlled by the largest shareholder as a whole. The definition used to identify Chaebol firms is that of a large business group established by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) and a group of companies of which more than 30% of the shares are owned by the group’s controlling shareholders and its affiliated companies. -

[email protected] 【Abstract】 Ideas for connecting itself to trans-continental gas pipelines and establishing a regional hub for gas trade market in Northeast Asia and have been popular topics among many policymakers, political leaders, and policy experts in South Korea over the last decades regardless of their ideological gaps. Also, some other infrastructure such as railroads and electricity grid have been envisioned. Other than any other infrastructure, cooperation for trans-continental gas pipelines has made some significant progress over the past decade. Nonetheless, related discussions involving South Korea or led by South Korea have remained largely abstract, normative and declaratory. It would be academically interesting and meaningful to investigate the disparity between South Korea’s aspirations for connecting itself to trans-continental gas pipelines and the political economic reality the country actually faces when the newly-inaugurated Moon Jae-in administration considers reviving his predecessors’ dreams. This paper begins with an examination of the theoretical background of South Korea’s aspiration for connecting itself to trans-continental gas pipelines. After that, it historically reviews South Korea’s interests in Russian gas and pipeline projects. -
