    “IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies—Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT “IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe At the intersection of social media, a trend in organic products, and an interest in do-it-yourself culture, the late 2000s opened a space for many Black American women to stop chemically straightening their hair via “relaxers” and begin to wear their hair natural—resulting in an Internet-based cultural phenomenon known as the “natural hair movement.” Within this context, conversations around beauty standards, hair politics, and Black women’s embodiment have flourished within the public sphere, largely through YouTube, social media, and websites. My project maps these conversations, by exploring contemporary expressions of Black women’s natural hair within cultural production. Using textual and content analysis, I investigate various sites of inquiry: natural hair product advertisements and internet representations, as well as the ways hair texture is evoked in recent song lyrics, filmic scenes, and non- fiction prose by Black women. Each of these “hair moments” offers a complex articulation of the ways Black women experience, share, and negotiate the socio-historically fraught terrain that is racialized body politics

Rebellious, ironic and thoughtful hip hop artists raise their voice for a queer consciousness and LGTB rights. At first glance, Hip hop and related genres seem to be heteronormative bubbles. The cliché includes invincible rappers, objectified female bodies, homophobic lyrihttps://norient.com/wp-admin/edit.phpcs, and sexist videos. However, the exceptions to this rule are old as the hip hop culture itself. Oddly enough, just recently feuilletons and music magazines have paid increasing attention to them. This debate didn’t create a new queer hip hop movement, but it did spark a new sensibility and shows: Hip Hop has always been a voice for the oppressed. Drake, Certified Lover Boy Durante un recente live di Instagram con suo padre Dennis Graham, Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham ha affermato che alcuni fan potrebbero detestare il suo prossimo album – proprio come “hanno odiato Views” — ma ha insistito sul fatto che “è il tipo di musica verso cui evolversi”. Presumiamo che CLB, in uscita a gennaio 2021, mostrerà il lato tenero di Drake – già visto in Hotline Bling e One Dance – che alle persone piace odiare.     How Queer Identities Have Progressed Within the Music Industry History of queer identity within the music industry The recent trend towards more visibility in the music industry is enigmatic of a larger trend as the pride movement gained momentum. The Stonewall Riots of 1969 marked a turning point in queer identity, demanding rights and protection against police brutality - paticularly towards gay men and trans women of colour. The Stonewall Riots launched queer identity into the public mainstream, and for the first time queer idenity was not only legalised in the UK but also visible. This started in the rock scene of the 1970s, a genre characterised by it’s defiance of the mainstream. Naturally in such a unbashidely indivalidsitic environment like rock, queer idenity flourished, although still when it reached mainstream it had to be censored behind metaphors and slights of hand. The most famous example of rock’s queer sexuality was Queen, fronted by queer icon Freddie Mercury, although the full extent of his queer idenitity within his music is often debated. One popular interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen’s three part rock ballad, is that it’s a song about a gay or queer man coming out, being rejected, and then coming into his own – not proud in spite of their sexuality, but because of it. As comedian Guy Branum wrote in his memoir My Life As a Goddess, later posted to pitchfork in 2018, “Bohemian Rhapsody is a breakup song for your mum,”1 in an article when he links his own fraught coming out with his parents to the murder depicted in the song.
