FLEISCHER^ ^Genetics Program, National Zoological Park, 3001 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20008, USA; ^Division of Birds, Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. 20013, USA; and ^MP International Consultancy, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, United Kingdom ABSTRACT.•We used screening techniques based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to explore the avian hematozoan parasites (Plasmodium spp. and Haemoproteus spp.) of two previously uninvestigated regions of continental South America. Comparisons of tropical- zone Guyana and temperate-zone Uruguay revealed that overall prevalence of Plasmodium and Haemoproteus species detected in a diverse sampling of potential hosts was significantly higher in Guyana. The difference in prevalence between the two geographic zones appears to be attributable to ecological differences rather than taxonomic sampling artifacts. Diversity of hematozoan haplotypes was also higher in Guyana. We found no relationship between hema- tozoan haplotype and host family sampled within or between regions. We found very few Plasmodium and no Haemoproteus haplotypes shared between the two regions, and evidence of geographic structuring of hematozoan haplotypes between the two regions. We suggest that a lack of hematozoan haplotype transmission between the two regions may be attributable to the migratory patterns of each region's avian hosts. RESUMEN.•Usamos técnicas de investigación basadas en reacción en cadena de polímeros (RCP) para explorar hemoparásitos avícolas (Plasmodium spp. y Haemoproteus spp.) en dos regiones no investigadas de Sudamérica. Las comparaciones de la zona tropical de Guyana y de la zona templada de Uruguay revelaron que la frecuencia general de especies de Plasmodium y Haemoproteus encontrados en una muestra diversa de hospederos potenciales fue significativamente más alta en Guyana. La diferencia en frecuencia entre las dos zonas geográficas aparentemente se debe a diferencias ecológicas que debido al muestreo taxonómico. La diversidad de hematozoos haplotipicos fue también más alta en Guyana. No encontramos una relación entre hematozoos haplotipicos y familias de hospederos muestreados dentro o entre las regiones. Encontramos solo algunos cuantos haplotipos de Plasmodium en común entre las dos regiones, pero no se encontraron haplotipos de Haemoproteus, ni evidencia de una estructuración geográfica de haplotipos de hematozoos entre las dos regiones. For sure, this was no ordinary Caribbean holiday! During the first couple of weeks we visited no fewer than ten islands (Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent, Barbados and Grenada), a logistical feat of some magnitude. With plenty of LIAT flights (the islanders refer to LIAT as ‘Leave Island any Time’ and ‘Luggage in Another Terminal’ to name but two of the many funny phrases coined from LIAT) and unreliable AVIS car hire reservations, we had our work cut out, but in the end, all worked out! It’s always strange birding on islands with so few targets, but with so many islands to pack-in, we were never really short of things to do. All of the endemics showed well and there were some cracking highlights, including the four smart endemic amazons, the rare Grenada Dove, the superb Lesser Antillean Barn Owl, the unique tremblers and White-breasted Thrashers, and a series of colourful endemic orioles to name just a few! At the end of the Lesser Antilles adventure we enjoyed a few days on Trinidad.

    BIRD ECOLOGY, CONSERVATION, AND COMMUNITY RESPONSES TO LOGGING IN THE NORTHERN PERUVIAN AMAZON by NICO SUZANNE DAUPHINÉ (Under the Direction of Robert J. Cooper) ABSTRACT Understanding the responses of wildlife communities to logging and other human impacts in tropical forests is critical to the conservation of global biodiversity. I examined understory forest bird community responses to different intensities of non-mechanized commercial logging in two areas of the northern Peruvian Amazon: white-sand forest in the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve, and humid tropical forest in the Cordillera de Colán. I quantified vegetation structure using a modified circular plot method. I sampled birds using mist nets at a total of 21 lowland forest stands, comparing birds in logged forests 1, 5, and 9 years postharvest with those in unlogged forests using a sample effort of 4439 net-hours. I assumed not all species were detected and used sampling data to generate estimates of bird species richness and local extinction and turnover probabilities. During the course of fieldwork, I also made a preliminary inventory of birds in the northwest Cordillera de Colán and incidental observations of new nest and distributional records as well as threats and conservation measures for birds in the region. In both study areas, canopy cover was significantly higher in unlogged forest stands compared to logged forest stands. In Allpahuayo-Mishana, estimated bird species richness was highest in unlogged forest and lowest in forest regenerating 1-2 years post-logging. An estimated 24-80% of bird species in unlogged forest were absent from logged forest stands between 1 and 10 years postharvest.

Columbina minuta is a species of ground-dwelling dove which measures 14.5-16.0cm long and weighs 26-42g (Soberanes-Gonzalez et al., 2010). It has reddish eyes, and dark grey and brown feathers, with the wings paler and with dark violet spots (Fig. 1) and mostly rufous (reddish) underwings. Tail feathers to the centre are grey-brown with the outer being very dark and narrowly tipped white. Pink legs. There is a distinction between males and females. Male: blue-grey nape and crown with bill being grey and tipped black. The neck, face, chest and belly areas are grey. Female: overall appear duller than males. Nape and crown are grey. Grey bill. Neck face and chest are pale grey with the area of the throat and belly being much paler. Juveniles display similar characteristics to females. This species may be confused with the ruddy ground dove Columbina talpacoti and the common ground dove Columbina passerina but there are distinctions, with the former being duller and not as rufous and the latter having a speckled neck and head. DISTRIBUTION. Although it has a very wide distribution, it is very discontinuous and occurs from the south of Mexico, through Central America to Colombia, over the north of South America onto Trinidad and the Guianas.

  • Birding in the Southern Caribbean
    Trinidad and Grenada Birding in the southern Caribbean Trinidad is situated just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela in South America and offers an ideal introduction to the birdlife of South America. The secret of the island's varied avifauna lies in the wide range of habitats, which includes high mountains, rainforests, marshes, agricultural lands and abandoned cocoa plantations. These diverse areas attract a wide range of birds from North and South America. Our base in Trinidad is the world-famous Asa Wright Nature Centre, which is located within tropical rainforest habitats. Grenada in contrast is a tiny island famous for the production of spices, notably nutmeg. The island has several interesting areas for birds, including the Mount Harman Estate which is home to the critically endangered Grenada Dove. Day 1: Fly to Port of Spain, the capital of Tr inidad and Tobago, and transfer to the Dates Asa Wright Nature Centre, which will be Friday November 19th – Tuesday our base for the holiday. Thanks to Mark Gawn for sharing his Blue Finch photo Bare-eyed Antbird was one of many highlights from this fun trip From the unparalleled biodiversity of the primeval Amazonian forest to the amazing abundance of wildlife in the Pantanal, this tour is always fascinating and great fun, and the superb lodges and tasty food make it especially enjoyable. This year was wetter than normal and we even got soaked once in the Pantanal, which is almost unheard of in July; the extra water definitely helped the overall bird numbers, so I certainly was not complaining, and it was still pretty darn dry compared to most South American tours. When I asked the group at the end of the trip for favorite sightings, everyone mentioned something totally different. There were so many memorable sightings that trying to pick one, or even a few, was almost futile. Some that were mentioned, in no real order, included: superb close-ups of Bare-eyed Antbirds at an antswarm at Cristalino (photo above); the “ginormous” Yellow Anaconda we saw crossing the Transpantanal Highway on our last full day, the minute and fabulous Horned Sungem from the Chapada, a superb encounter with the rare White-browed Hawk from one of the towers at Cristalino, our very successful hunt for the newly-described Alta Floresta Antpitta, and last but far from least, the magnificent Jaguar we saw for an extended period of time along the banks of the Três Irmãos River.

Email: [email protected] Abstract.- Despite its vast extension and the rich fauna that it hosts, the Paraguayan Humid Chaco is one of the least studied ecoregions in the country. In this study, we provide a list of birds and medium-sized and large mammals recorded with camera traps in Estancia Playada, a private property located south of Occidental region in the Humid Chaco ecoregion of Paraguay. The survey was carried out from November 2016 to April 2017 with a total effort of 485 camera-days. We recorded 15 mammal and 20 bird species, among them the bare-faced curassow (Crax fasciolata), the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), and the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis); species that are globally threatened in different dregrees. Our results suggest that Estancia Playada is a site with the potential for the conservation of birds and mammals in the Humid Chaco of Paraguay. ABSTRACT: Although the Atlantic forest is the best-studied Brazilian phytogeographic domain, few coastal municipalities of the state of São Paulo can count on published and critically revised bird species list, which are important initial steps to organize conservation inniciatives. Here we present historical records from Bertioga, a northern coastline municipality of the state of São Paulo, as well as recent records obtained in surveys during the past years within the municipality. Surveying methods, carried out between 2008-2011, included point counts, 10-species lists, transect counts and mist nets. This compendium resulted in 330 documented species, 90 of which still await documentation. Of these 420 bird species, 85 (20.4%) are Atlantic forest endemic species and as many as eight, six and 23 are threatened at the global, national and state levels, respectively. Seventeen species are reported from Bertioga for the first time.
