Travers Scott, Committee Chair Dr. Erin Ash Dr. Darren Linvill ABSTRACT For a long time, professional wrestling has existed on the outskirts of society, with the idea that it was just for college-aged men. With the rise of the popularity of the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion, professional wrestling entered the mainstream. Celebrities often appear at wrestling shows, and the WWE often hires mainstream musical artists to perform at their biggest shows, WrestleMania and Summer Slam. Despite this still-growing popularity, there still exists a gap between men’s wrestling and women’s wrestling. Often the women aren’t allowed long match times, and for the longest time sometimes weren’t even on the main shows. -

LAND OF NO MERCY: THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT AFTER ADOPTIVE COUPLE V. BABY GIRL Selected excerpts From The Indian Child Welfare Act: Case and Analysis (2013) C. Steven Hager Oklahoma Indian Legal Services, Inc. 4200 Perimeter Center Suite 222 Oklahoma City, OK 73112 (405) 943-6457 [email protected] 1 LAND OF NO MERCY: THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT AFTER ADOPTIVE COUPLE V. BABY GIRL “We were out in the desert over the summertime, driving to Nevada... and we came upon this, this house on the side of the road, that this Indian had built... it had a big sign that said: ‘This is the land of peace, love, justice and absolutely no mercy..." -Bruce Springsteen, 1978 The historical removal of Indian children from their families was an attempt to destabilize tribal influence and tribal culture; by “killing the Indian,” the dominant society hoped to “save the man.”1 Mandated requirements sought to “integrate” Indians into a culture openly hostile to them, removing children from their families and tribes on the thinnest of pretext. This policy did not fade with time. A 1974 study by the Association of American Indian Affairs showed that 25 to 35 percent of all Indian children had been removed from their families and placed in foster, adoptive, or institutionalized care at some point in their life.2 The 1970’s saw a national adoption rate for Indian children eight times higher than for non-Indians, with 90 percent of those placements in non-Indian homes.3 Four times more Indian children from Oklahoma were either adopted by non-Indians or in foster care.4 In New Mexico, twice as many Indian children were in foster care as any other population group. -

Therese Antone, RSM , President he mission of Salve Regina encourages the community to “seek wisdom Tand promote universal justice.” Emanating from the goals of the founding Sisters of Mercy, the University mission calls us to move from fact to knowledge toward wisdom, and to inspire others to strive with determination to “work for a world that is harmonious, just and merciful.” The education we provide must, therefore, extend far beyond the earning of a degree; beyond the abundance of facts or a wealth of information. It must incorporate lasting values and address the heart and soul as well as the mind. It is a distinct honor and privilege to express my gratitude to the faculty of Salve Regina for continuing the rich heritage on which the University was founded. Their efforts to embrace mercy and weave its spirit into the curriculum contribute significantly to promoting the enduring vision of our founders. -
Untangling the Hermeneutics, Ethics and Storyline of Holy War NEWT 0670/OLDT 0670
Course Syllabus Spring and Summer School 2012 Untangling the Hermeneutics, Ethics and Storyline of Holy War NEWT 0670/OLDT 0670 July 23—27, 2012 Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM William J. Webb HP: 519-725-8737 [email protected] or [email protected] I. COURSE DESCRIPTION The war texts of Scripture often trouble contemporary Christians and serve as stumbling blocks for unbelievers. Why would God command genocide of the Canaanites? How could God possibly be pleased with slaughtering babies or taking virgins as trophy wives? Do the traditional answers about the evil of the Canaanites and God‟s absolute justice/holiness resolve these ethical dilemmas? This course will look at the unfolding theme of holy war throughout Scripture from the sword-wielding angels outside the garden (Genesis) to the final apocalyptic battle (Revelation) and examine better ways of untangling the complex issues of hermeneutics, ethics and storyline. 2 II. LEARNING OUTCOMES Through taking this course, the student should be able: . To demonstrate an understanding of the sword/war theme from Genesis to Revelation and how it fits with related concepts such as “sacred space” and land possession—first Eden, interim Eden(s) and the apocalyptic final Eden. To appreciate how a reader‟s horizon impacts the assessment of biblical texts and articulate the pros and cons of viewing the holy war texts from the radically different horizons of (a) contemporary Hague and Geneva war conventions and (b) the ancient- world war context. To evaluate critically whether the traditional answers (e.g., the evil of the Canaanites) actually answer the disturbing questions about military ethics and, correspondingly, show an awareness of pastoral sensitiveness and strategies for handling difficult topics. -
