CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background Of The Study

Language is the medium of communication by which people can

maintain their siocial relationships. It is impossible for people to live

without socializing with others. language it self can survive and develop

because people use it and teach it to others. With the use of language,

people can expess their feelings and thoughts every language has their own

grammar, by which there are rules that bind the speakers to deliver

messages in a way that the target audiences are able to receive them. The

grammar of a language basically consists of phonology, morphology,

syntax and semantics. In the field of linguistics, the latter, which is

semantics, deals withthe construction of meaning in the used words or

sentences.

Then, semantics is the study of the meaning of language that is

good and right. both stand-alone words and words that are part of a

sentence or sentence as a whole. The meaning is very important in a

language. The meaning is also important for the experience of using

language, it is difficult to capture individual words, without knowing the

meaning of speech, it is difficult to identify the separate words that form it.

Without the capacity to express meaning, language loses one important

aspect. That is, meaning is very important in our lives because of the way 2

it is conveyed or understood. so that we know the meaning, we can learn about figurative language.

Furthermore, Figurative language is words or phrases that do not have normal everyday literal meaning or are not actual words. figurative language is used to give a sense of beauty and emphasis on the importance of the thing conveyed. Usually figurative language aims at concrietization.

Figurative language is often used by poets in each poem stanza and song writers in the lyrics of the song. One of the example in the song lyrics that use figurative language is the lyrics from maher zain songs. Maher Zain is a . He has many figurative languages in every lyric he composed.

In addition, Maher Zain is a religious singer. His voice is beautiful and the lyrics of songs that can be understood by many people. Maher Zain song lyrics are using English. English is a language that is recognized as an international language. So, that many Muslims in various parts of the world can easily understand the lyrics of the song. In the song, maher zain uses beautiful grammar, many figurative languages are used so as to make the listener carried away in the atmosphere of each song.

Meanwhile, song Lyrics is an individual's expression about something that has been seen, heard or experienced. Songs are accompanied by more lyrics that have a structure and a relationship between them, which has the impression of meaning. Apart from that, songs are one kind of unique way to be enjoyed. Because music is better at

3

combining sound with lyrics. In conclusion, the song is an association of

several lyrics that have a link between them, which is always accompanied

by music or melodic sound. Singers can influence the listener's

subconscious.

Based on the description that has been stated above, then this

research will describe "An analysis of Figurative Language in the song

lyrics by Maher zain"

B. Focus of The Study

In this research, the researcher focuses on An Analysis Of

Figurative Language In The Song Lyric, Insha Allah, Hold My Hand, and

For The Rest Of My Life By Maher Zain.

C. Problem Formulation

The problems are formulated as follows:

1. What types of Figurative Language can be found in song lyric by Maher

Zain ?

2. What type of Figurative Language is mostly used in song lyrics ?

D. Objectives and Benefits of The Study

1. The Objectives of the study

This research is aimed to:

a. To Find out the types of Figurative Language in the song lyric by

Maher zain.

b. To find out the most figurative language type found in maher zain

songs.

4

2. The Benefits of the study

The sicnificance of the research can be seen as follows:

a. For the Students

For the university students, this research hopefully can be

used to study Figurative Language not only from their hand

book but also from english song lyric. besides, practically, the

studentcan use the knowledge to memorize more vocabularies

and improve their skill in English.

b. For the lecturer

For the lecturers, this research might become a meaningful

contribution in teaching vocabulary not only from hand book,

but also practically from reading and analyzing an song lyric

which hopefully will help the students gain their vocabularies

effectively.

c. For the future research

For the future resarch, Overall, this research will be one of

the important references for English Language Education

which conducts similar research.

E. Prior Research

The are two prior researches that the researcher took related to this

study. The first is Ria Tri Okta Prasanti, under the title “An Analysis Of

Song Lyrics Translation Techniques And Quality Assessment In Four

Maher Zain‟s English Songs” the researcher was done on 04 January 2019.

5

Based on the research result, it can be concluded that research focuses on

analyzing the translation techniques and quality assessment of the song

lyrics translation of Maher Zain. The aim is to describing the translation

techniques employed in the translation of song lyrics by Maher Zain and to

find out how is the the quality of translation based on Hurtado‟s error

analysis.1

The second is Dimas Anggit Prawiro with the title “Figurative

Language In Selected Songs Lyrics Of Maher Zain” The researcher was

done on 2019. Based on the result of this research, the researcher could

conclude that all of the selected songs lyrics by Maher Zain are so

inspiring, meaningful, have a lot of advice, moral values for listeners or

readers become a self-reminder.2

Based on both of the study above, the researcher focuses on

improving student analysis. This is related to the problems faced by

teachers and students in the analysis of teaching and learning in Maher

Zain song lyrics. By applying the song lyrics strategy, the researchers hope

this is an effective strategy for teaching student achievement in analysis.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL REVIEW

A. The Concept Of Semantic

1. Definition of Semantic

Semantics is The study of sentence meaning and word

meaning. 3According to Griffiths, semantics is one of the two main

branches of linguistic studies. Basically, it is the study of meaning. He

defines semantics as the study of word meaning and sentence meaning;

it differs from pragmatics which relates language and its contexts.

Similar to Griffiths, Borg states that a semantic theory is interested in

sentence meaning and not speaker meaning. Carston has his own

concept in differentiating semantics and pragmatics. Extremely, he

states that pragmatics, which concerns on speaker‟s intention, also has

contribution in determining semantic content.

In addition, Kwantes explains that semantic representation of the

target word is constructed by context vector that is retrieved from

memory. In his book about pragmatics, Yule differentiates the term

semantics, syntax and also pragmatics. He stated that syntax is about

the relationships between linguistic forms and how it is arranged and

formed. Then, pragmatics is about the relationship between linguistic

forms and its users.

3 Patrick Griffths, “An Introduction to English Semantics and Pragmatics”, (Edinbrugh Universityy Press), P.6. 7

The last, the relationship between linguistic forms and the real

things in the world which the linguistic forms refer to is called as

semantics. Semantics questions how words literally relate to things, not

to the users or contexts In this case, the discussion of grammar covers

syntax, morphology and phonology. In conclusion, semantics explains

the speaker‟s ability in understanding new words or sentences without

any grammatical processes. Under the study of semantics, some topics

are discussed. Some are semantic features, semantic roles and semantic

relations. Yule explains that semantic features are the elements with the

sign of plus (+) or minus (-) to differentiate words meanings in a

language. 4

2. Type Of Semantic

a. Behaviorist Semantics

Behaviorists have a general attitude: (1) Behaviorist

adherents are not too sure of the mentalistic terms of mind,

concept, and ideas: (2) there is no essential difference between

human and animal behavior: (3) prioritizing learning factors and

are not sure of innate factors: and (4) the mechanism or its

determination.

b. Descriptive Semantics

Descriptive semantics are semantic studies that specifically show

the current meaning. The meaning of the word when it first appears. Not

4Hilyatus Sa‟adah, “A Semantic Analysis of Entailment Applied by the Main Character in the Movie Life of Pi”, ( Yogyakarta: English Education Department Faculty Of Languages And Arts Yogyakarta State University), P. 13.

8

noticed. For example, in Indonesian there is the word champion, the

person who gets the highest ranking in a match without regard to the

previous meaning, which is the regulator or the divorce in the chicken

union. So, descriptive Semantics only pay attention to the present

meaning. c. Generative Semantics

Famous concepts in this flow are: (1) competence, namely

the ability or knowledge of the language understood in

communication: (3) the external structure, namely the language

elements in the form of words or sentences that sound like: and

(4) inner structure, namely the meaning that is in the outer

structure. This flow became famous with the emergence of

Chomsky's book in 1957 which was later updated. d. Grammatical Semantics

Grammatical semantics is a simultaneous study that

specifically examines the meaning contained in sentence units.

Verhaar says Grammatical Semantics is much more difficult to

analyze. To analyze the sentence still sitting, brother is already

sleeping not only interpreted from the words that make it up. e. Lexical Semantics

Lexical semantics is a more satisfying simultaneous study in

the discussion of the meaning systems contained in words. Lexical

semantics are not too difficult. A dictionary is a good example of

lexical Semantics: the meaning of each word is described there.

9

Thus, lexical semantics pays attention to the meaning contained in

word sentences as independent units. f. Historical Semantics

Historical semantics is the study of semantics that examines

systems of meaning in time series. This historical semantic study

emphasizes the study of meaning in the span of time, not the

change in word form. Changes in word form are studied more in

hoistorical linguistics. g. Semantic Logic

Sematic logic is a branch of modern logic that deals with

symbolic concepts and notations in semantic language analysis.

Logic examines the system of meaning as seen from logic as it

applies in mathematics that refers to the word study of meaning or

interpretation of teachings, especially those formed in the logic

system by Carnap is called semantics. h. Structural Semantics

Structural semantics stems from the views of structural

linguists pioneered by Saussure. Structuralists argue that every

language is a system, a unique structural relationship consisting of

units called structures. The structure is transformed into elements in

the form of phonemes, morphemes, words, phrases, clauses,

sentences, and discourses which divide them into phonological

studies, morphology, syntax, and discourse.

10

In other hand, so many types of semantics. all of the type

semantics have different functions or uses and examples.

B. The Concept of Figurative Language

1. Definition of Figurative Language

Figurative language is a type of language that varies from the

norms of literal languag. figurative language does not mean exactly

what it says, but instead forced the reader to make an imaginative leap

in order to comprehend an author‟s pointt. It usually involving

comparison between two things that may not be. At first, seem to relate

to one another.5

Figurative language is language that uses figures of speech. A

figure of speech is a means of saying something other than the literal

meaning of the world. Figure of speech maybe said to occur whenever a

speaker or writer, for the sake of freshness or emphasis, departs from

the usual denotations of words. So, Figurative language is the meaning

of one's language.

Potter states the general term that we will use for the figures of

speech that make up figurative language is metaphor, much as the term

imagery, which narrowly refers to visual phenomena, is nevertheless

used to cover additional sense impressions as well. The basic process of

metaphor is the comparison if the things that are largely dissimilar, but

have at least someone characteristic in common.

5Laila Borges, “British Literature & American Literature”, English for Specific Purposes World, ( Brazil: Universitario Da Cidade), P. 24.

11

Figurative language is part of style of language or figure of

speech a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the

word. Figurative language is very common in poetry. But is also used in

prose and nonfiction writing as well. This is very useful to write

because it can make their language more beautiful to listen.

2. Types of figurative language

There are kinds of figurative language expression such as

metaphor, personification, simile, etc. Each expert has their own

definition in each type of figurative expressions.

a. Simile

Kennedy affirms that simile is comparison of two things,

indicated by some connective, usually like, as, then or a verb such as

resembles. Generally, simile is meant by a type of figurative

language that used to explain the resemblance of two objects (in

shape, color, characteristic etc). For example:

1) As easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

2) Her eyes are like a star, eastern star.

The meaning of the first example is doing the things that

people think is hard but he makes it is very easy and simple. For the

second example, the word “eyes” and “eastern star”, expression can

be called explicit comparison because it expresses those words with

12

the same purpleSe. The both of the example above used the key

word like and as to comparison between two unlike thengs.6

b. Metaphor

The second type of figurative language is

metaphor.Metaphors are conceptual (mental) operations reflected in

human language that enable speakers to structure and construe

abstract areas of knowledge and experience in more concrete

experiential terms.7 Metaphor like simile that is to comparison but in

metaphor does not use “as” or “like” to create the compares To.

According to Kennedy affirms that metaphor is a statement that one

thing is something else, which in a literal sense, it is nIt. It doesn‟t

use connective words such as like or As. Metaphor only makes sense

when the similarities between the two things become apparent or

someone understands the connection. For example:

1) He has a heart of stone.8

2) I am a big, big world.

The meaning of the heart of stone is the man cannot accept an

opinion from others because his heart is hard like a stone. For the

second example, the first main word is connected with the second

highest word directly. Thus, “I ” connection with “big world”

6Buchori Mansuri, “An Analysiis Of Figurative Language In Mmaher Zain Selected Song Lyrics”, (Tulungagung:IAIN Tulungagung) 7James R. Hurford, Brendan Heaslay and Michael B. Smith, “Semantics a Coursebook Second Edition” ( Cambridge University Press 2007), P. 331. 8 Chesteron, G.K. All Slang is Metaphor, and All Metaphor is Poetry, Chapter 16th

13

directly. both of statement above comparing two things that

different.

c. Personification

It is a figure of speech in which a thing, an animal, or an

abstract term (truth or nature) is made from human. Personification

gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas.

This can really affect the way the reader imagines things. This is

used in children‟s books, poetry, and fictional literature. For

example:

1) The sun played hide and seek with the clouds.

2) The sky was full of dancing stars.

The meaning of the first statement is the weather of that day

is always changing, and the meaning of the second statement is the

sky of that night is very beautiful because full of stars. Both of the

sentences above describe the sun and the sky is played and dancing

as human do. The word is played and dancing has a connotative

meaning.

d. Metonymy

Metonymy is meronymic concepts „allow us to conceptualize

one thing by means of its relation to something else.9According to

Perrine. metonymy is the point of something closely related to the

thing actually meant. It is a figure of speech which the name of one

9IBID., 338

14

object is replaced by another which is closely associated with it. For

example:

1) Somebody wants your love so open the door.

2) The pen is mightier than the sword.

The meaning of the first sentence is someone falling in love

and asked the girl to accept his love. The second example describes

not only sword, weapon, knife that can hurt by someone else, but

pain can hurt other as sharp as a sword. Both sentences are closely

related to the thing actually meant. e. Symbol

According to Diyanni symbol is an object or action that

represents something beyond its literal self. An apple pie, for

example, can represent an American Lifestyle. Natural symbols like

light and darkness, fire and water can stand for contradictory things.

The meaning of any symbol whether an object, an action, or a

gesture, is controlled by its context. A symbol can be defined simply

as any object or action that means more than itself. For example:

1) Music is nature‟s painkiller. Sing him a song.

2) I‟m ready on jail.

The meaning of the statement above is the man dislike music,

and the meaning of the second sentence is the man is ready with

anything happen with him. Because the painkiller and jail here has to

mean more than it is(it not same the literal meaning from dictionary.

15

f. Synecdoche

Synecdoche is the use of part of a thing to stand for the whole

of it or vice versa. From the definition above a synecdoche is a

figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole. For example:

1) All eyes on me.

2) Well, because Medicare doesn‟t cover old ladies falling off of

giant bees. Get down. The meaning of the first example is all people

looking at her.

The meaning of the second statement is Medicare is not

always cover all of old ladies of their sickness. Words eyes and giant

bees are used to designate a part of things for the whole. g. Paradox

Paradox is a statement which seems to contain two opposite

facts but is or may be true. Paradox occurs in a statement that at first

strikes us as self-contradictory but that on reflection make some

sense. For example:

1) He was dead in the middle of his riches.

2) We just need to move quickly but carefully.

The meaning of the first statement is the man was dead when

he was in the top in his riches has much money. The meaning of the

second statement is they need to move as fast as possible but

carefully. Both of example are contradictory statement because it has

to make sense.

16

h. Hyperbole

Kennedy affirms hyperbole is emphasizing a point with

statement containing exaggeration. It can be ridiculous or funny.

Hyperboles can be added to fiction to add color and depth to the

character. Hyperbole is a figure of speech that it is intentional

exaggeration or overstating, often for emphasis or vividly

descriptive. Hyperboles can be added to fiction to add color and

depth to a character. For example:

1) I had to walk 15 miles to school in the snow, uphill.

2) He was so hungry. He ate that whole cornfield for lunch, stalks

and all.

The meaning of the first sentence as he walks to school in the

snow it makes like walk so far like 15 miles away. The second

statement describes that he ate so much because very hungry. The

statement above being an expression of over-statement.10

i. Oxymoron

Murthy affirms an oxymoron is a figure of speech which is

used to express two contradictory qualities of the same thing.

Oxymoron is when two words are put together that contradicts each

other (opposite). For example:

1) Takes a big man to play a little guitar.

2) Big man‟s afraid of a little mouse?

10 Agustina Budiarti, Analysis Of Figurative Language On Song Lyrics Provided In “Pathway To English” Textbook PublishedBy Erlangga For Eleventh Grades Of Senior High School (Surakarta: IAIN Surakarta 2017), P. 50

17

The meaning of the first sentence is sound impossible when

a big man plays a little guitar because he has big hands and fingers.

The second statement describes the big man that has a big body

afraid only because a little mouse. The meaning of the sentence is

different from the reality.11

j. Litotes

Litotes is opposite from hyperbole. It is kind of

understatement where the speaker uses negative of a word ironically,

to mean the opposite. According to Hornby, litotes is expression of

one‟s meaning by saying something is the direct opposite of one‟s

thought, it to make someone‟s remarks forceful. For examplele:

1) I shan‟t be sorry when it‟s overr.

2) It was no easy matter.

The meaning of the first example is he will not say apologize

when something bad is happening. The meaning of the second

statement is the man always thinks carefully when problem come,

and now makes it simple and easy.

k. Irony

Irony has a meaning that extends beyond its use merely as a

figure of speech. According to Diyyani, irony almost arises from a

contrast or discrepancy between what happens and what has been

expected to happen. For example:

11 Heny Listiani “ An Analysis Of Figurative Language Found On The Song Lyric By Taylor Swift‟s “Speak Now” Album”, (Salatiga: IAIN Salatiga 2015), P. 106

18

1) You are so disciplined because you come from the meeting at 8.00

o‟clock.

2) Your house is very beautiful because there are so many things on

the floor.

The meaning of the first example is the employee come too

late at the meeting. The meaning of the second statement is the house

is very dirty because there are many things in everywhere. The

statement above is a contrast between what happens and what has

been hoped to happen.12

l. Antithesis is a construction in which words are opposed but balanced

in opposition. For example:

1) Good and beast.

2) Ignorance and reason

m. Euphemism is the substitution of an inoffensive term. It is the use of

a mild, comforting, or evasive expression that takes the place of one

that is taboo, negative, offensive, or too directs.

1) He terminated her pregnancy

2) passed away : Died

n. Parallelism

12Ibid., 61

19

Parallelism is the state of being parallel or of corresponding in some

way, and the use of successive verbal construction in poetry or prose

that correspond in grammatical structure, sound, meter, meaning, etc.

According to Nordquist state the parallelism is Similarity of structure

in a pair or series of related words, phrases, or clauses. For example:

1) We can‟t hide, we can‟t deny

2) Don‟t despair and never lose hope

o. Alliteration

Alliteration is a stylistic device in which a number of words,

having the same first consonant sound, occur close together in a

series. For examples:

1) But a better butter makes a batter better.

2)A big bully beats a baby boy.13

In other hand, so many types of figurative language. all of the

type figurative language have different uses and examples.

C. Maher Zain Song Lyric

1. Maher Zain

Maher Zain is an Islamic singer, singer and Swedish music

producer from Lebanon, born in 1982 in Lebanon. Men of Arab and

European descent who come with songs inspired by Islam in attractive

pop and modern music. He also lives in the United States. His debut album, Thank You God, with 13 songs and two bonus songs was released on November 1, 2009, with an exclusive Percussion Version and a French Version released shortly after.

Output moved to Sweden, a compilation of newly elected

Maher, last year where he continued his education. Maher got the first keyboard compilation he received in ten years. He then entered the

University and got a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering. During his teenage years, he loved spending nights at school with fellow participants where they would sing, rap, write and experiment with music. Some family members are also singers. 2. Song

Song is one of the familiar literatures in the listener's ear.

According to Jamalus(1988:5) reveals that songs can be described as art

works in singing to musical instruments accompaniment. In addition,

Hornby USA (1995) can be defined song as a short rhyme or set of

verses in music and aimed to be sung. Based on the above explanation,

it can be concluded that the song is one of the literature in the form of

poem which is showed by sung and accompanied by musical

instruments.15

Song is a machine human feeling. Song also become a media a

singer to show his or her feeling. Some song is related to his or her

experience and life. If a singer feels happy, it means song consist of

happy themes. Song themes decided of singers feeling, purpose and

condition. In other words, happy, shy and angry will indicate to singer's

feeling. Singers can influence the listener's subconscious, because the

themes of song can carry the listener to the atmosphere.

is also known as the song. Songs can be sung solo, both (duet), three

(trio) or the rollicking (coir).

Words in the song are usually shaped rhythmic poetry, but there

is also a spiritual nature or free prose. Songs can be categorized in

various types, depending on the measure used. Chants are recited poems

appropriate tone, rhythm, time signatures, and certain melodies to form

a harmony. Chanting is often also known as the song that means the

tone or sound art composition in sequence, combination, and the

temporal relationship (usually accompanied by a musical instrument) to

produce a musical composition having unity and continuity (containing

rhythm). And variety of tone or rhythmic sound is also called the song.

According to Hornby said that “Song is a short piece of music with

words that you sing”. So, Songs are music with beautiful words.

3. Lyric

According to Dallin “Lyrics are printed as a form of

communication between the author and the readers”. Mainly of the

times, they carry a message (whatever that might be) with the purpose

of inspiring the listeners, at least, to think about it. Such a purpose and

form of communication are entrenched in the cultural context of these

people, according to their musical preference occasion, etc.16

Lyrics are a set of words that make up a song. Usually

consisting of verses and choruses. The meaning of lyrics can either be

explicit or implicit. Some lyrics are abstract, almost unintelligible, and,

in such cases, their explication emphasizes form, articulation, meter,

and symmetry of expression. A lyric is a paper written by someone who

has imagination in composing beautiful words that have deep meaning.

Lyrics and music combined would be a very good song and pleasing to

the ear. The writer of lyrics is a lyricist or lyrics.

According to Hornby, he stated that the lyrics are expressing a

person's personal feeling and thoughts, connected with singing and

written for a lyric poem is the words of a song. It means, lyrics are

expressing someone's feelings which are then written into a lyric.

Language song really is not much changed from the language of poetry.

It is a short lyric poem that expresses emotion. Song lyrics are poetry

that singing. Form of emotive expressions is realized in sounds and

words. Language in the song lyrics has rules that are elements of poems

emotive through sounds and words. In addition to get a particular

impression as poetry, language lyrics are concise and packed. This is

explained by the lyrics of the song has undergone a process of

c. Hold My Hand

I hear the flowers kind of crying loud

The breeze is sounding sad, oh no

Tell me when did we become so cold and empty inside

Lost our way long time ago did we really turn that blind?

We don't see that

We keep hurting each other no all we do is just fight

Now we share the same bright sun

The same round moon

Why don't we share the same love?

Tell me why not

Life is shorter than most had thought

Hold my hand

There are many ways to do it right

Hold my hand

Turn around and see what we've left behind

Hold my hand my friend

We could save the good spirit in me and you

For another chance

And let's pray for the beautiful world

The beautiful world I share with you

Children seem like they've lost their smile

On the new bloody play grounds, oh no

How could we ignore heart breaking crying sounds

And we're still going on like nobody really cares

And we just stopped feeling

All the pain we cause Like it's a daily basic affair

Now we share the same bright sun

The same round moon

Why don't we share the same love?

Tell me why not

30

Life is shorter than most had thought

No matter how far I might be

I'm always going to be your neighbour

There's only one small planet where to be

So I'm always going to be your neighbour

We cannot hide, we can't deny

That we're always going to be neighbours

Your neighbour, my neighbour, we're neighbours20

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Design

There are two types of research method, they are qualitative and

quantitative method. The characteristic of this research is chosen based on

its purpose. he characteristics of this study were chosen based on their

objectives. It has been quoted that according to Creswell, "Qualitative

research is one type of research that can be used in the scope of education

in addition to quantitative research and classrooms".In this researcher used

a descriptive research method, in which the data are described

systematically to get an accurate and factual result. Isaac and Michael

state, Descriptive qualitative method describes the population and the

evidence of the data systematically, factually and accurately. The purpose

of descriptive research is to describe systematically the facts and

characteristics. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to study

the problem because this study has purpose to describe and analyze the

types of figurative language used in Maher Zain selected songs. This study
