As one of the first coffee bars in post-war Britain, The Jacaranda Club - affectionately known as “The Jac”! - was opened by Allan Williams in 1958, featuring a record shop upstairs and live music in its basement.! One of these groups was The Silver Beetles, featuring art students John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe, who! !Williams employed to paint the walls and a mural in the basement.! “This is Our Home”: The Jacaranda Club 1958-2018 features artefacts and ephemera from the Jac’s legacy and history; then and now. The exhibition is curated by Liverpool-based Marlie Centawer, a writer, musician and photographer, as well as an adjunct lecturer with the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture !at Brock University, Canada <http://www.marliecentawer.com> ! When he was 8 years old, he heard Love Me Do at a party and his life changed forever! He fell in love with The Beatles and knew that music would be his life. For years, he bought and assembled a collection of Beatles instruments with the idea of one day forming a tribute band. In 2016 he met Bruno (drummer) through a friend and invited him to join the band. Then Bruno invited three other friends who played with him in another band (Martin, Bruno and Agustin). When the band finally formed in 2016, they began to perform in different stages and bars in Montevideo. At the end of 2016 they competed in the Beatle Week battle of the bands at The Cavern in Buenos Aires, reaching the final, and in 2017 they decided to take the leap and present a show in one of the great theaters of Montevideo in which they recreated chronologically the music of The Beatles. Beatles History – Part One: 1956–1964
BEATLES HISTORY – PART ONE: 1956–1964 January 1956–June 1957: The ‘Skiffle Craze’ In January 1956, Lonnie Donegan’s recording of “Rock Island Line” stormed into the British hit parade and started what would become known as the ‘skiffle craze’ in Great Britain (vgl. McDevitt 1997: 3). Skiffle was originally an amateur jazz style comprising elements of blues, gospel, and work songs. The instrumentation resembled New Or- leans street bands called ‘spasms,’ which relied on home-made instru- ments. Before skiffle was first professionally recorded by American jazz musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, it had been performed at ‘rent parties’ in North American cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Many African- American migrant workers organized rent parties in order to raise money for their monthly payments (vgl. Garry 1997: 87). Skiffle provided the musical entertainment at these parties, as everybody was able to partici- pate in the band, which usually consisted of home-made acoustic guitars or a piano backed by a rhythm section of household instruments, such as a washboard, a washtub bass, and a jug (vgl. McDevitt 1997:16). Jazz trumpeter and guitarist Ken Colyer pioneered the skiffle scene in Great Britain. In 1949, he formed the Crane River Jazz Band in Cran- ford, Middlesex, together with Ben Marshall (guitar), Pat Hawes (wash- board), and Julian Davies (bass). Their repertoire included skiffle songs “to illustrate aspects of the roots of jazz and to add variety to a pro- gramme” (Dewe 1998: 4). After leaving the group in 1951, Colyer mi- grated to the United States to work with jazz musicians in New Orleans. -

Review: The Beatles Anthology [Original version published in German in the Badische Zeitung, 4 November 2000] For more than thirty-five years, the Beatles have credited their musical success to the long hours they spent playing in Hamburg, before they were discovered by Brian Epstein and then the rest of the world. Now it’s the official story: The Beatles Anthology (367 pp. Chronicle Books $60), the group’s collective ‘autobiography’ published October 5th, describes how their musical apprenticeship served on the Reeperbahn produced the sound that defined the 1960s and, arguably, popular music ever since. Told through the words of surviving band members Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, supplemented by extensive culling of old interviews with John Lennon, the history of the band is recounted from its beginnings as the Quarrymen in 1957 to the final acrimonious breakup in 1970. Like the television series and CD-sets to which it is a companion, Anthology is meant to be a picture of their life as a band from the inside—what it was like “in the eye of the hurricane,” as McCartney puts it. To hear the Beatles tell it, the seven-hour sets in Hamburg under pressure to “make a show” and bring in customers transformed their music, so much so that when they returned to England after their first stint in Hamburg, the world had its first taste of Beatlemania. Billed as “The Beatles—Direct from Hamburg!”, when they began playing in the Litherland Town Hall in Liverpool (27 December 1960), for the first time the crowd spontaneously rushed the stage in the frenzy that would become familiar in the succeeding years. -
