Co-Option in Siberia: the Case of Diamonds and the Vilyuy Sakha1,2
CO-OPTION IN SIBERIA: THE CASE OF DIAMONDS AND THE VILYUY SAKHA1,2 Susan A. Crate Institute of Environmental Sciences, Geography, and Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056 Abstract: A specialist on the Vilyuy Sakha, a native non-Russian people of north- eastern Siberia, Russia, examines the public health and environmental challenges threat- ening the livelihood of the group. The paper presents a case study of political activism among the Vilyuy Sakha in the immediate post-Soviet period, as regional citizens were able to gain access to information on the pollution caused by diamond mining and other forms of industrial development. The demand for public health and environmental infor- mation, and mobilization against proposals for new mine development, emerged rapidly during the post-Soviet period, but disappeared almost as suddenly in the late 1990s. This paper explores the reasons for the disappearance of this evolving citizens’ environmental movement, arguing that a major cause was co-option by elite diamond interests. 1The following case study is based on the author’s last 12 years of work and research in the Vilyuy River regions of the western Sakha Republic, Russia. In 1991 and 1992, the author performed a contempo- rary analysis of the Sakha traditional summer festival, yhyakh, which comprised the field work for her mas- ter’s degree in folklore from UNC-Chapel Hill. In 1993, she studied the indigenous Sakha language with support from an IREX on-site language training grant. In 1994, the author received a two-year grant (1994– 1995 inclusive) from the John D. -

The article discusses interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the artistic space of significant texts of the Russian and Yakut literary traditions, with a focus on understanding and assessing the cultural potential for the development of literary tourism. The literary mapping method seems to be the most appropriate to achieve this goal. The presented study contributes to the study of cultural development in border and cross-border regions. Introduction The most important component of the innovation model of lifestyle and behavior, ensuring its effective sociocultural development, is the accumulation and inheritance of cultural capital, achieved in the process of education and training. The newest interdisciplinary research in the field of creative industry considers the representation of cultural heritage as the most important resource of competitiveness of the region. The preservation and popularization of the cultural heritage are carried out in a number of regions of the country using an innovative research tool of the creative economy, i.e. a cultural mapping of the territory to assess the potential of the creative and intellectual resources of the region. Understanding the space in the context of culture and studying the semiotics of the cultural landscape implies a system-synergetic approach to theorizing from reading the spatial “text” to modeling the geo- image of space. -

Almost all males were successfully analysed (Y-STR) and this allowed us to identify paternal lineages and their geographical expansion through time. This genetic data was confronted with mythological, historical and material evidence to establish the sequence of events that built the modern Yakut genetic diversity. We show that the ancient Yakuts recovered from this large collection of graves are not representative of an ancient population. Uncommonly, we were also able to demonstrate that the funerary pre- ference observed here involved three specific male lineages, especially in the 18th century. Moreover, this dominance was likely caused by the Russian conquest of Siberia which allowed some male clans to rise to new levels of power. Finally, we give indications that some mythical and historical figures might have been the actors of those genetic changes. These results help us reconsider the genetic dynamics of colonization in some regions, question the distinction between fact and myth in national histories and provide a rare insight into a funerary ensemble by revealing the biased process of its composition. -

Ecology of Sable of North-Western Yakutian Native Population

In 2003–2012, 687 carcasses of aboriginal sables of Zhigansk population represented by the Yenisey subspecies (Martes zibellina yeniseensis Ognev, 1925) inhabiting North-Western Yakutia were studied. Skull and body size of native sables were larger and fur colour was lighter as compared to the Vitim subspecies (M. z. princeps Birula, 1922) introduced in South-Western Yakutia (Olekma population). Dynamics of the native population is characterized by the prevalence of natural cycles at moderate hunting rates. The portion of juveniles made up 69.3% on average. Among adults 37.0% were 1-year-old animals, 25.1% 2-year-old, and 13.3% 3-year-old sables. Animals aged 4 to 12 years were less numerous (24.6%), especially females (8.5%). Fertility (3.46±0.2) and fecundity (2.77±0.3) rates as well as the number of reproducing females (61.4%), especially at the age of one year (2.9%), were less than in Olekma population. The diet of Zhigansk sables was based on northern red-backed voles (Myodes rutilus) (43.7% of studied stomachs), grey red-backed voles (Craseomys rufocanus) (43.7%) and root voles (Alexandromys oeconomus) (50.2%). Consumption of pikas (Ochotona sp.) was increased (up to 31.2%) in separate years. Birds were rarely consumed (1.6%). Plant food mainly consisted of bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) (15.5%). Poorly-nourished sables made up 71.9% of the sample. -
