Coles2 1 Department of Biology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87131, U.S.A. 2 Mollusca Section, Department of Biodiversity, National Museum of Wales, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP, U.K. Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The Pupillidae form an important component of eastern North American land snail biodiversity, representing approx. 12% of the entire fauna, 25-75% of all species and individuals at regional scales, at least 30% of the species diversity, and 33% of individuals within any given site. In some regions pupillids represent 80-100% of total molluscan diversity within sites, notably in taiga, tundra, and the base-poor pine savannas and pocosins of the southeastern coastal plain. Adequate documentation of North American land snail biodiversity thus requires investigators to effi ciently collect and accurately identify individuals of this group. This paper presents a set of annotated keys to the 65 species in this family known to occur in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The distinguishing taxonomic features, updated county-scale range maps, and ecological conditions favored by each are presented in hopes of stimulating future research in this important group. Tom Burke (Certified Wildlife Biologist) identified all specimens. The surveys targeted four special status snail species: Blue mountainsnail (Oreohelix strigosa delicata ‐ STR), Umatilla megomphix (Megomphix lutarius ‐ STR), Humped coin (Polygyrella polygyrella ‐ OR‐STR, WA‐ SEN), and Dryland forestsnail (Allogona ptychophora solida ‐ WA‐STR). REPORT UPON THE COLLECTIONS OF TERRESTRIAL AND FLUVIATILE MOLLUSCA MADE IN PORTIONS OF COLORADO, UTAH, NEW MEXICO, AND ARIZONA, DURING / , /Li THE YEARS 1872, 1873, a*d 1874. { 7 IJY Dr. H. O. YARROW. 923 CHAPTER XV. The collections upon which the following report and list are based were placed in the hands of Mr. George W. Tryon, jr., Mr. W. G. Binney, Mr. Tem- ple Prime, and Dr. James Lewis for determination, and it is to their kind- ness that we are indebted, not only for the identifications given, but for valuable notes in regard to the different species. To the latter gentleman our thanks are due for a criticism and revision of the manuscript of this report. A communication made by Mr. Try on to the Academy of Natural Sciences in regard to the collection of 1872 is by his permission appended to the report, and it will be seen that some valuable facts in regard to the dis- tribution of various genera have been evolved by this series of shells, small though it may be. The collection of 1872 was made in Utah and Nevada, principally by Mr. H. W. Henshaw and Dr. H. C. Yarrow, with the kind assistance of dif- ferent members of the expedition; that of 1873, for the most part in Colo- rado Territory, by Dr. J. T. Rothrock and Mr John Wolf, the botanists of the expedition; and that of 1874, in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, by collectors of the expedition. Although we are able to chronicle but few discoveries, the report is thought to possess a certain degree of value with regard to the limits advanced of range and distribution. -

JONES — BIOLOGICAL SERIES, Vol. /, No. I PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY THE UNIVERSITY PRESS UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY Preface In the preparation of this bulletin an effort has been made to bring together what was previously known of recent Utah mollusks and to incorporate with this the results of the authors’ special studies. The form of presentation has been determined by the fact that, in the first place, the paper is intended to serve as a basis for further scientific work and, in the second place, to serve as a reference text for teachers of zoology in Utah colleges and high schools and as an aid to amateur collectors. The article is based primarily upon a study of upward of one thousand sets of shells collected during the year 1927 and a lesser number collected during 1928, all of which are now deposited in the Zoological Museum o.f the University of Utah. Trips totaling approximately three thousand miles, within the borders of the state, were taken to secure these specimens. An accompanying map is given to facilitate reference to the principal localities visited or referred to. Such Utah material as is contained in the Dr. Orson Howard collection, also deposited in the University, has been in cluded ; but that collection is largely of fresh-water bivalves from all parts of the United States. In most cases identifications have been checked by comparison with reliably determined specimens from other localities. -
