A first meeting between Juventus and Sporting Clube de Portugal gives both the opportunity to step up the chase to keep pace with Group D leaders FC Barcelona. • The teams each have three points, having won one and lost the other of their first two fixtures, and trail Barça by three. The omens are against Sporting, however, who have never won in Italy. Match background Juventus • A 2-0 victory against Olympiacos FC last time out stretched the Bianconeri's unbeaten home run in UEFA competition to 24 games (W15 D9), dating back to a 2-0 reverse against FC Bayern München in April 2013. • Juventus's 13 encounters with Portuguese sides have ended W7 D2 L4; at home their record is W4 D1 L1. All four of those defeats came against SL Benfica. • The Bianconeri's sole home loss to a Portuguese Liga club came in their first encounter, Benfica triumphing 1-0 in Turin in a 1967/68 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final second leg (3-0 aggregate). • Juventus got the better of Portuguese opposition in last season's round of 16, beating FC Porto 3-0 over two legs (2- 0 away, 1-0 home). • Juventus lost last season's final 4-1 to Real Madrid CF in Cardiff. They were also beaten 3-0 by FC Barcelona on matchday one, the first time since the 2014/15 group stage they had lost successive European matches; by overcoming Olympiacos they avoided suffering three defeats in a row in Europe for the first time since 1993/94. • This is an 18th UEFA Champions League group stage campaign for Juve, and a sixth in succession. • The Italian outfit have reached the knockout rounds in their last three attempts, having finished third in their section in 2013/14. Sporting • Sporting have not played an Italian club for six years since two contests against SS Lazio in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage (2-1 home, 0-2 away). • That loss in Rome means Sporting's record away to Italian clubs now reads W0 D3 L10. Overall it is W5 D10 L12. • Beaten 1-0 at home by Barcelona in their most recent fixture, Sporting were 3-2 winners at Olympiacos on matchday one, just their third victory in their last 24 European away fixtures (D5 L16). It was also their first away win in this competition proper since a 1-0 success at FC Basel 1893 on 9 December 2008; their subsequent record was D1 L6, with a five-game losing run before the Olympiacos triumph including all three away games in last season's group stage. • The Portuguese team were 5-1 aggregate winners against Romania's FCSB in the play-offs, following up a 0-0 home draw with a 5-1 success in Bucharest. That win in Romania ended Sporting's four-game losing streak in European away matches. • Sporting are in the group stage for a third time in four years. In 2016/17, they came fourth in their group behind , Real Madrid CF and Legia Warszawa. • Sporting qualified by finishing third in the Portuguese Liga in 2016/17. Coach and player links • guided Benfica to victory against Juve in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League semi-finals (2-1 home, 0-0 away). • Jesus's only other match against Italian opposition was a 1-0 away defeat by AC Milan in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage when he was coaching SC Braga. • Jérémy Mathieu was in the Barcelona side beaten 3-0 at Juventus in last season's quarter-final first leg. He had come on as a substitute in Barça's 3-1 victory in the 2015 UEFA Champions League final. • Alex Sandro played in Portugal for Porto between 2011 and 2015; his record against Sporting was W4 D3 L1. • Rui Patrício and were in the Portugal team that upset Blaise Matuidi's France 1-0 in the UEFA EURO 2016 final. • Rui Patrício and William Carvalho also got the better of Marko Pjaca and Mario Mandžukić in Portugal's 1-0 last-16 scalp of Croatia. Wojciech Szczęsny was an unused substitute as Portugal edged out Poland on penalties in the quarter-finals.

The winner will be announced in December. 10 Juventus - Sporting Clube de Portugal Wednesday 18 October 2017 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Juventus Stadium, Turin Head coach Massimiliano Allegri Date of birth: 11 August 1967 Nationality: Italian Playing career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), , AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923 Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, AC Milan, Juventus • A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, his hometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that season before heading back to Livorno. • Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals under Giovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari, Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003. • Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he won the Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion. • Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, this time as Serie A's best coach. A bad run of results the following season prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 – although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan. • Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004. Dismissed in January 2014 with Milan 11th in Serie A, that summer he was appointed to succeed Antonio Conte at Juventus. Allegri won the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in his first season, also taking his side to the final of the UEFA Champions League, and added further domestic doubles in both 2015/16 and 2016/17, when they again reached the UEFA Champions League final. Jorge Jesus Date of birth: 24 July 1954 Nationality: Portuguese Playing Career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, GD Peniche, SC Olhanense, CF Os Belenenses, GD Riopele, Juventude SC, UD Leiria, Vitória FC, SC Farense, CF Estrela da Amadora, Benfica e Castelo Branco, SR Almancilense Coaching career: Amora FC, FC Felgueiras, CF Estrela da Amadora (twice), Vitória FC, Vitória SC, Moreirense FC, UD Leiria, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga, SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal • A midfielder at Sporting, Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguese sides before moving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to a title. Then led Felgueiras from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, though they were relegated in his third campaign in 1995/96. • Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he endured another relegation with Moreirense in 2004/05. In 2006/07, he guided Belenenses to fifth place and the Portuguese Cup final, where despite losing to Sporting they earned a place in the UEFA Cup. • Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently the UEFA Cup round of 16. A fifth-place Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in 2009 and Jesus rewarded their faith with the league title and League Cup in his debut campaign. • After completing a hat-trick of Portuguese League Cup triumphs in 2012, Jesus's Benfica came tantalisingly close to an even bigger treble in 2013, only to finish runners-up in both the Portuguese Liga and Cup and lose the UEFA Europa League final to Chelsea FC. • Signed a two-year contract extension in June 2013 and led Benfica to another UEFA Europa League final the following season, although they again lost, this time to Sevilla FC. That disappointment was somewhat soothed by a clean sweep of the three domestic trophies, with another league and League Cup secured in 2014/15, during which Jesus became the Benfica coach with the most victories and the most league matches. Unexpectedly left to join Sporting in June 2015, taking the club to the Liga's runners-up spot in his first season – behind Benfica – and third the following year.
