The Organization:

The is widely considered to be among the most artistically adventurous and innovative arts institutions in the , celebrated for its artistic excellence, creative performance concepts, active touring, award-winning recordings, and standard-setting education programs. In the 2020–21 season, the San Francisco Symphony welcomed conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen as its twelfth Music Director and embarked on a new vision for the present and future of the orchestral landscape. This exciting artistic future builds on the remarkable 25-year tenure of Michael Tilson Thomas as the San Francisco Symphony’s Music Director. Tilson Thomas continues his rich relationship with the Symphony as its first Music Director Laureate. In their inaugural season together, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony have introduced a groundbreaking artistic leadership model anchored by eight Collaborative Partners from a variety of cultural disciplines: Nicholas Britell, Julia Bullock, Claire Chase, Bryce Dessner, Pekka Kuusisto, , Carol Reiley, and Esperanza Spalding. This group of visionary artists, thinkers, and doers joins with Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony to chart a new course of experimentation by collaborating on new ideas, breaking conventional rules, and creating unique and powerful experiences.

The San Francisco Symphony presents more than 220 concerts and presentations annually for an audience of nearly 450,000 in its home of Davies Symphony Hall and through its national and international touring. A cornerstone of the organization's mission, the San Francisco Symphony's education programs are the most extensive offered by any American orchestra today, providing free comprehensive music education to every first- through fifth- grade student in the San Francisco public schools, and serving more than 75,000 children, students, educators, and families annually. The San Francisco Symphony’s recordings have won such awards as France's Grand Prix du Disque and Britain's Gramophone Award, as well as 16 Grammy Awards. San Francisco Symphony radio broadcasts, the first in the nation to feature symphonic music when they began in 1926, today carry the Orchestra's concerts across the country. In 2004, the SFS launched the multimedia Keeping Score on PBS-TV and online and in 2014, the San Francisco Symphony inaugurated SoundBox, an experimental performance venue and music series located backstage at Davies Symphony Hall. The Role:

Location: San Francisco, CA

Position Summary:

The San Francisco Symphony is seeking a Senior Director Human Resources to build best practice and progressive thinking into all facets of SFS’ Human Resources (HR) functions, operations, and practices.

They will lead all human resources (HR) operations, talent acquisition, organizational development and learning, and internal HR/staff communications, integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles and values into the SFS culture.

The Senior Director Human Resources actively participates as a key member of the leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

Human Resources Key Accountabilities: • Oversee all HR operations, initiatives, and systems. Lead HR team and provide coaching and development. • Strive to ensure the HR function addresses inequities and promotes race equity and inclusion throughout the SFS. • Lead organizational compliance with all federal, state, and local labor and employment law issues and requirements. • Design and implement employee benefit offerings. • Lead and improve annual administrative salary review process and ensure continued equitable salary structure. • Serve on the SFS’ negotiations team and actively participate in the collective bargaining process with the five unions represented within the SFS. • Serve as the liaison to the Board of Governors Human Resources Committee.

Organizational Design and Talent Management Accountabilities: • Develop comprehensive employee policy guidelines that motivate employees, and that align with the SFS’ mission, values, and DEI Plan. • Ensure that SFS’ recruiting practices attract and support candidates with a diversity of backgrounds and experience. Integrate DEI learning into onboarding for all employees. • Build a strong employee development framework including career growth, learning, recognition, and promotion activities.

• Research and implement management and other training opportunities that enable all employees across stakeholder groups, to develop and/or improve skills and competencies needed to be successful in their current role or to prepare for new responsibilities. • Develop performance management and improvement systems, including recognition and rewards programs. Incorporate DEI measures into performances reviews/management for all staff. • Offer consultation, facilitation, and resolution strategies for workplace issues. • Partner with senior leadership to encourage and champion an internal culture of respect that embraces cultural differences and strives to create a sense of belonging.

Candidate Profile:

Professional Experience: • Minimum of 8+ years of progressive HR leadership experience . • Demonstrated passion and track record of successfully designing and implementing efforts related to DEI. • Non-profit sector preferred. • Proven experience working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels in a complex organization. • Effective stakeholder and relationship management experience; ability to interact with and build trusted relationships with all levels of employees.

Other Skills, Knowledge & Ability: • Knowledge and practical application of HR disciplines including employment and labor laws, employee relations, management and leadership development, performance management, organizational design, recruitment and compensation philosophies. • Current knowledge of emerging HR trends and practices. • Experience managing labor contracts and participating in labor negotiations would be beneficial. • Advanced interpersonal and public communication skills with a growing skillset in strategies to strengthen internal community and culture. • Skilled consultation, facilitation and resolution strategies for workplace issues. Assist in communications between employees, performance management and explanation and clarification of SFS policies and procedures. • Strong organizational, time management, problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to manage priorities, workflow and deadlines concurrently. • Ability to create strategies, implement innovative solutions to improve results.

Education/Certification: • Bachelor’s Degree in human resource management, business or public administration, or closely related field, encouraged. • SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR certification, preferred.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Annual salary of $170,000 • Benefits include healthcare, retirement and professional development.
