Landscape South of the Mount and Conservatory Garden

The Conservancy is undertaking a multi-phase initiative to restore the east side landscapes from the East Meadow to the . The first phase addressed the area just south of the composting operation at the Mount and Conservatory Garden .

A principal objective of the restoration was to link the landscape with adjacent parts of the Park by improving circulation routes . To enhance circulation, the landscape restora- tion realigned and reconstructed pathways to connect the walkway north and south of the Park’s East 102nd Street entrance . At last, visi- tors to the Conservatory Garden have access to the South Garden gate, which had not been opened to the public in decades, providing uninterrupted passage through the six-acre Garden . The Conservancy also improved ir- rigation and storm drainage infrastructure, and enhanced the lawns and seasonal plantings .

This project was made possible thanks to the generosity of Fiona and Eric Rudin, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rudin, The Rudin Foundation, and May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation .

Research Conducting research about various aspects of Central Park and its visitors is one of the many valuable means that enables the Conservancy to update and improve its stewardship of the Park . The Survey We have completed a yearlong comprehensive user sur- vey, which entailed counting visitors entering the Park and a short interview with those exiting the Park . The informa- tion gathered will help us to better serve visitors in our ongoing restoration and management of the Park . Analysis of the information will be announced in 2010 . “The Central Park Effect” The Conservancy partnered with Appleseed, Inc ., a con- sulting firm, to study the economic, social, and environ- mental impact of Central Park on the City . What we now are calling “The Central Park Effect” revealed that a well- managed, healthy, and dynamic Central Park — thanks to the Conservancy’s more than $500 million investment in the Park since its founding in 1980 — generates more than one billion dollars in annual economic activity and revenue for New York City .

#22 Special Report: The Storm 23

The August 18, 2009 Storm: Recovery and Restoration

The Damage The severe storm that tore through the north- ern end of Central Park the night of August 18, 2009 was an event of a magnitude and intensity unprecedented in the Park’s 150-year history . In less than 30 minutes, more than 500 trees — some of them as old or older than the Park — were destroyed, many more were damaged, and major landscapes were devastated . The Impact The entire northern end of the Park, an area of approximately 275 acres, has been altered by the storm — in some places dramatically, and in others, beyond recognition . Many of the trees lost were among the tallest, largest, and fin- est specimens in the Park, including these twin linden trees on the East Meadow (top left) .

#23 Special Report: The Storm 24

The Cleanup Conservancy crews were on the scene, securing the sites of toppled trees and hanging limbs for the safety of the public, and clearing the drives and pathways . In the days and weeks following the storm, Conservancy crews supplemented by contractors removed hundreds of uprooted and severely damaged trees . The Restoration It is often the case that with adversity comes opportu- nity . In the near future we will establish the next genera- tion of trees and a more diverse community of plants while restoring the historic character of the landscape . The Funding Over 2,400 donors, including Conservancy members, New Yorkers and friends of Central Park from around the country and the world, responded generously to the recovery effort, with donations still coming in every day . Led by CEO Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase & Co., has donated $1 million to the Conservancy’s restoration effort, helping create new habitats for Central Park bird species and wildlife, as well as landscape restoration and tree plantings . The Conservancy is also grateful to Time Warner Cable of New York City for their exten- sive media coverage .
