More than any other twenty-first century collab- orative endeavor, Wikipedia has attracted the attention of scholars in the so- cial sciences and law both as an example of what collective intelligence makes possible and as an empirical puzzle. Conventional thinking suggests that ef- fective and successful organizations succeed through hierarchical control and management, but Wikipedia seems to organize collectively without either. Legal and economic common sense dictates that compensation and contracts are necessary for individuals to share the valuable products of their work, yet Wikipedia elicits millions of contributions without payment or owner- ship. As the Internet as a whole assumes an increasingly commanding role as the technology of global commerce and communication, the World Wide Web from its very inception was designed to be a free and open medium through which human knowledge is created, accessed and exchanged.1 But, that Web is in danger of coming to a close. The Web was meant to be Free. It laid out a language of HyperText, which anyone could use to author electronic documents and connect them together with links. The documents in totum were meant to form a global web of information with no center and no single point of control.2 The first Web browser was also a Web editor, and this principle that any node in the network can both consume and create content has more or less been defended to this day. The Web was meant to be Open. It detailed a common interface that could be implemented on any computer. This innovation overcame the obstacles of incompatible platforms and tools for the sharing of knowledge on the Net,3 by defining a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and other standards for the discovery and communication of online data.

Pete Deyo EDMT 627 The Official Ubuntu Book by: Matthew Helmke, Amber Graner, Kyle Rankin, Benjamin Mako Hill, Jono Bacon July 1, 2012 Prentice Hall 337pg The Official Ubuntu Book (OUB) has an expansive scope aiming to make the Ubuntu experience easier and more enjoyable for first time users to system administrators. Written by a group of some of the most experienced Free and Open Source (FOSS) administrators the OUB details meticulous step by step instructions setting up and installing Ubuntu down to learning the command line. This near 400 page tome covers the complete Ubuntu system and philosophy. Though the writing suffers somewhat from the large number of community contributed sections, the warm and welcoming community succeeds in making new users feel at home. With an eye for the technical side of the writing, the chapters follow a fairly linear path starting with the simplest things and the GUI it moves in a sequential fashion towards more difficult topics and more difficult descriptions. No matter its place within the structure of the book the writing always takes the time to explain in full not just what to do but also why and what options you have. Realistically, Linux is such a diverse operation system with so many different distributions that it is refreshing to see such a focused effort on fully explaining just one example system. The book is filled with concise and clear descriptions of various technologies and system software that make the task at hand and the terminology used a true pleasure to learn. The book additionally has many wonderful small tips that are clearly marked elaborating on terms or just explaining some of Linux’s inside jokes.
