The songwriter presents his mythical masterpiece in two acts: Pet Sounds live, followed by his greatest hits. Old-time Beach Boy Al Jardine and long-term member Blondie Chaplin join Wilson’s nine-piece band to resurrect the sun-drenched pop that has influenced The Beatles, David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead. This show completes a momentous year for Wilson, which has included the announcement of his final European tour and release of the critically acclaimed biopic Love & Mercy. Ben Marshall, Head of Contemporary Music at Sydney Opera House, said: "Brian Wilson is one of the giants of modern music and Pet Sounds is his masterpiece. It is with enormous pleasure that we welcome this towering figure to the Sydney Opera House for this remarkable performance. Pet Sounds is a deep-dive into production virtuosity, phenomenal songs and genuinely affecting, poignant reflections on love, loss, melancholy, faith and being out of time and place. And he plays all the hits, too. This is a musical moment not to be missed." The essential Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is one of many albums sculpted from the palette of Pet Sounds, a record praised by Rolling Stone as an “evolutionary compositional masterpiece.” It heralded the first chapter of a soon struggling Wilson, who became mired in decades of seclusion in the studio. Immortalised for taking the surfing summer romance of The Beach Boys into wildly symphonic territory, Pet Sounds was said to be impossible to perform until the Hall of Famer's miraculous comeback in recent years. The LA Times calls Wilson’s refreshed performance “a thing of beauty, capturing the childlike wonder at the heart of Wilson’s music”. Whether unearthed through AM radio gold or the silver-screen portrayal by Paul Dano and John Cusack, Brian Wilson’s California dream is a joyous celebration, and this titan of modern music returns to bring it to life in the Opera House. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, excessive drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band’s popularity, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and ultimately thriving. In his memoir entitled I Am Brian Wilson, he details the exhilarating highs and lows of his life from his failing memory, including the sources of his creative inspiration throughout the decades. - - - - - - - - - EARLY LIFE: Brian Wilson was born on June 20th, 1942 to Audree and Murry Wilson. Growing up in Hawthorne, California, Wilson exhibited unusual musical abilities, such as being able to hum the melody from When the Caissons Go Rolling Along after only a few verses had been sung by his father before the age of one. Surprisingly, a few years later, he was discovered to have diminished hearing in his right ear. The exact cause of this hearing loss is unclear, though theories range from him simply being born partially deaf to a blow to the head from his father, or a neighborhood bully, being to blame. While Wilson’s father was a reasonable provider, he was often abusive. A minor musician and songwriter, he also encouraged his children in this field in numerous ways. At an early age, Brian was given six weeks of lessons on a toy accordion and, at seven and eight, sang solos in church with a choir.

    SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys.

    The South African All-Stars Member Bios Tony Cedras BORN in Elsies River, Cape Town in 1952, Tony Cedras is a sought after session player who has toured the world as part of the Gracelands show band, and before that, as a member of Amandla cultural ensemble in exile. Cedras' first musical experiences were in the local church choir, singing and also playing accordion. He soon progressed to trumpet, taking in the local jazz scene, as well as the American jazz influences prominent in South Africa at that time. Cedras became a key session player in the Cape jazz circuit, working with artists such as Jonathan Butler, tenor saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, altoist Robbie Jansen, flautist/guitarist Russel Herman, and bassist Basil Moses. The Estudio project, together with Robbie Jansen and others was acknowledged as a highlight of this period. After touring inside South Africa, Cedras relocated to Gaborone, in the neighbouring state of Botswana in the early 1980's. At that stage, Botswana was a home-away-from-home for many exiles, and it was here that he met trombonist/bandleader Jonas Gwangwa. Gwangwa was the musical director of the Amandla ensemble of the ANC, which Cedras joined, travelling not only in Africa, but also in Europe, Canada and Brazil. While working with Amandla, Cedras spent time in London, where he made contact with other South African artists who were part of the ex-patriot South African music scene. He moved there in 1985, and soon formed the group Kintone, a band which "explored the common musical ground between its West Indian and South African membership".
