ABSTRACT This thesis introduces the reader to rock music in Durban from 1963 to 1985, tracing the development of rock in Durban from rock'n'roll to hard core punk. Although the thesis is historically orientated, it also endeavours to show the relationship of rock music in Durban to three central themes, viz: the relationship of rock in Durban to the socio-political realities of apartheid in South Africa; the role of women in local rock, and the identity crisis experienced by white, English-speaking South Africans. -

Issue 142 AUGUST 2ND, 2021 Is there a reader among us who doesn’t dig ZZ Top? We mourn the passing of Joseph Michael “Dusty” Hill (72), bassist, vocalist and keyboardist for the tres hombres. Blending blues, boogie, bone-crushing rock, born-for-MTV visuals, humor and outrageousness – they once took a passel of live animals on stage as part of their 1976 – 1977 Worldwide Texas Tour – Hill, drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy F. Gibbons have scorched stages worldwide. As a friend said, “it’s amazing how just three guys could make that much sound.” Rest in peace, Mr. Hill. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gets inspired by the music of Renaissance composer William Byrd, and understands The Animals. Wayne Robins reviews Native Sons, the superb new album from Los Lobos. Ray Chelstowski interviews The Immediate Family, featuring studio legends Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel and others, in an exclusive video interview. I offer up more confessions of a record collector. Tom Gibbs finds much to like in some new SACD discs. John Seetoo winds up his coverage of the Audio Engineering Society’s Spring 2021 AES show. Ken Sander travels through an alternate California reality. WL Woodward continues his series on troubadour Tom Waits. Russ Welton interviews cellist Jo Quail, who takes a unique approach to the instrument. In another article, he ponders what's needed for sustaining creativity. Adrian Wu looks at more of his favorite analog recordings. Cliff Chenfeld turns us on to some outstanding new music in his latest Be Here Now column. -
BRIAN WILSON Performing ‘Pet Sounds’ & His Greatest Hits
MEDIA RELEASE FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2015 SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS BRIAN WILSON Performing ‘Pet Sounds’ & His Greatest Hits TUESDAY 29 MARCH 2016 CONCERT HALL, SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE “One of pop’s greatest innovators.” THE GUARDIAN Experience the songbook of '60s California as The Beach Boys’ co-founder Brian Wilson takes to the Concert Hall stage in a rare performance for the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds on Tuesday 29 March. The songwriter presents his mythical masterpiece in two acts: Pet Sounds live, followed by his greatest hits. Old-time Beach Boy Al Jardine and long-term member Blondie Chaplin join Wilson’s nine-piece band to resurrect the sun-drenched pop that has influenced The Beatles, David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead. This show completes a momentous year for Wilson, which has included the announcement of his final European tour and release of the critically acclaimed biopic Love & Mercy. Ben Marshall, Head of Contemporary Music at Sydney Opera House, said: "Brian Wilson is one of the giants of modern music and Pet Sounds is his masterpiece. It is with enormous pleasure that we welcome this towering figure to the Sydney Opera House for this remarkable performance. Pet Sounds is a deep-dive into production virtuosity, phenomenal songs and genuinely affecting, poignant reflections on love, loss, melancholy, faith and being out of time and place. And he plays all the hits, too. This is a musical moment not to be missed." The essential Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is one of many albums sculpted from the palette of Pet Sounds, a record praised by Rolling Stone as an “evolutionary compositional masterpiece.” It heralded the first chapter of a soon struggling Wilson, who became mired in decades of seclusion in the studio. -

The South African All-Stars Tony Cedras
The South African All-Stars Member Bios Tony Cedras BORN in Elsies River, Cape Town in 1952, Tony Cedras is a sought after session player who has toured the world as part of the Gracelands show band, and before that, as a member of Amandla cultural ensemble in exile. Cedras' first musical experiences were in the local church choir, singing and also playing accordion. He soon progressed to trumpet, taking in the local jazz scene, as well as the American jazz influences prominent in South Africa at that time. Cedras became a key session player in the Cape jazz circuit, working with artists such as Jonathan Butler, tenor saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, altoist Robbie Jansen, flautist/guitarist Russel Herman, and bassist Basil Moses. The Estudio project, together with Robbie Jansen and others was acknowledged as a highlight of this period. After touring inside South Africa, Cedras relocated to Gaborone, in the neighbouring state of Botswana in the early 1980's. At that stage, Botswana was a home-away-from-home for many exiles, and it was here that he met trombonist/bandleader Jonas Gwangwa. Gwangwa was the musical director of the Amandla ensemble of the ANC, which Cedras joined, travelling not only in Africa, but also in Europe, Canada and Brazil. While working with Amandla, Cedras spent time in London, where he made contact with other South African artists who were part of the ex-patriot South African music scene. He moved there in 1985, and soon formed the group Kintone, a band which "explored the common musical ground between its West Indian and South African membership". -

BROTHERLY LOVE in the '70S
TANGERINi E BOX T O iliBiMiniPiiiiJîîilîiii'jiiJiliy ,11:.! mm BROTHERLY LOVE IN T H E '70s he 24th of February 1971, Carnegie Hall, and The Beach Boys are about to play the longest gig of their career to a fuU house. A lot is riding on this set - a deep dive into their catalogue spanning their 10-year history. It's a new dawn for "America's Band". After four years of chaos dogged by declining record sales, lawsuits, mental breakdowns and worst of ail - irrelevance, this is their moment. Kicking off their two hour set with a Tdriving, kinetic 'Heroes And Villains' the hairy, funky-looking group are pretty much unrecognisable as the "Surfîng Doris Days" left behind by the counterculture back in '67. Leader Brian Wilson is absent, barely seen in public since he abandoned his opus SMiLE and abdicated his post as genius-in- residence. His brothers Cari and Dennis are here to avenge him, leading the charge of their formidable live assault. Even the lanky, balding figure of Mr 'California Girls' himself Mike Love has the bearing of a hip guru in his robes and beads. The gig is a triumph. With a new, hipper label behind them and a united front surely it was time for "America's Band" to shine, with or without their leader. This is the story of how, out of adversity The Beach Boys made their last great albums. " I dont see why I should lie and say the time the grab-bag 20/20 came out in wife Suzanne. Dennis at least succeeded in everything is rosy when it's not." February '69, it was clear that Brian was suppressing the tapes of the recordings Twenty-Seventh May 1969, and Brian barely involved, beyond chastising Cari made with Manson and his entourage he'd Wilson is talking to NME.
