1 Vol 15 Issue 01 – 02 January 2007 The Burkina Electric Project and Some Thoughts About Electronic Music in Africa Lukas Ligeti [email protected] http://www.lukasligeti.com Keywords Burkina Electric Project, electronic music, Africa, electronics and computer technology Abstract This paper is an updated summary of a presentation I gave at the Unyazi Electronic Music Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2005. Burkina Electric, founded in 2004, is an ensemble featuring two musicians (singer Mai Lingani and guitarist Wende K. Blass) and two dancers (Hugues Zoko and Idrissa Kafando) from Burkina Faso; the German pop music pioneer Pyrolator on electronics (both audio and visual); and myself on electronics and drums. Our objective is to create and perform original music combining the traditions of Burkina Faso with the world of DJ/club/dance electronica. In so doing, we build bridges between African and Western cultures, especially in the domains of pop/youth culture and experimental music. Burkina Electric's debut CD, Paspanga, was recently released for the Burkinabè market. By using elements of Burkinabè traditional music, including rhythms not usually heard in contemporary urban music, plus rhythms of our own creation, we aim to enlarge the vocabulary of “grooves” in the club/dance landscape; the dancers help audiences interpret these unusual rhythmic patterns. Sonorities and structural models of West African music are transferred to electronics and reassembled and processed in various ways. Rather than superimposing drum programming on top of an African traditional structures, we compose music that aims to organically confront and combine Africa and Occident, and tradition and experiment, while maintaining the particular sensibilities of both worlds.

Lead by Nicaraguan frontman German Cantillo the band has an addictive combination of Nuyorican Boogaloo, West Coast Funk and the ever present Cuban grooves engulfing the stage with monstrous horns and bass, funky breaks with furious lyrics in English and Spanish. Relocating to Vancouver via Winnipeg, Santa Lucia LFR recorded their first album Album in 2001 with producer Darryl Nuedorf (Sarah McLachlan, Neko Case). Officially making the band the first Rock en Español album produced in Western Canada. In 2006, Santa Lucia released their second full length album, “The Streets / Las Calles” with legendary producer Larry Anschell (Nickelback, Pearl Jam) from Turtle Recording Studios in White Rock, BC Canada. Santa Lucia successfully supported “The Streets / Las Calles” with countless West Coast dates and major open air festivals including; Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival, as well as many out of town festivals including The Ness Creek Music Festival in Saskatchewan, Folk on the Rocks Festival in Yellowknife NWT, Victoria Jazz Festival, Edge of the World. Because of their great appeal and versatility of their music they are welcomed in nearly every kind of festival such as Salmon Arm Blues & Roots Festival, Victoria Ska Fest, Vancouver Dragon Boast Fest to Taste of Fernie and Okanagan Winery shows series at Tinhorn Creek.

  • Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel, and the Politics of Aesthetic Production
Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel, and the Politics of Aesthetic Production Nili Belkind Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree Of Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Nili Belkind All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Music in Conflict: Palestine, Israel and the Politics of Aesthetic Production Nili Belkind This is an ethnographic study of the fraught and complex cultural politics of music making in Palestine-Israel in the context of the post-Oslo era. I examine the politics of sound and the ways in which music making and attached discourses reflect and constitute identities, and also, contextualize political action. Ethical and aesthetic positions that shape contemporary artistic production in Israel-Palestine are informed by profound imbalances of power between the State (Israel), the stateless (Palestinians of the occupied Palestinian territories), the complex positioning of Israel’s Palestinian minority, and contingent exposure to ongoing political violence. Cultural production in this period is also profoundly informed by highly polarized sentiments and retreat from the expressive modes of relationality that accompanied the 1990s peace process, strategic shifts in the Palestinian struggle for liberation, which is increasingly taking place on the world stage through diplomatic and cultural work, and the conceptual life and currency Palestine has gained as an entity deserving of statehood around the world. The ethnography attends to how the conflict is lived and expressed, musically and discursively, in both Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) of the West Bank, encompassing different sites, institutions and individuals. I examine the ways in which music making and attached discourses reflect and constitute identities, with the understanding that musical culture is a sphere in which power and hegemony are asserted, negotiated and resisted through shifting relations between and within different groups.

NO.: CMB-CD-22 Vieux Farka Touré (Mali) and Idan Raichel (Israel), virtuosic superstars from very different backgrounds, join together to create masterworks of collaboration and improvisation. After a chance meeting in an airport in Europe, Idan and Vieux forged a deep friendship that led to an impromptu get together at a small studio in Tel Aviv in November 2010. The resulting recording session - acoustic, spontaneous, entirely improvised, and stunningly beautiful - could only be described as magic, and The Touré-Raichel Collective was born. On the album The Tel Aviv Session, Idan and Vieux have captured an inspired musical moment that will bring to mind classic albums such as Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré with Ry Cooder, Keith Jarrett’s The Köln Concert or Vincent Segal and Ballake Sissoko’s acclaimed Chamber Music. ................................................................................................................................................................ www.cumbancha.com www.toureraichel.com THE STORY BEHIND THE TOURÉ-RAICHEL COLLECTIVE Israeli superstar Idan Raichel and Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré ing rock groove.
