Huan Tsang, a Chinese Traveler who visited and traveled across India in 629-645 BC during the rule of King Harshavardhana, was first to etch out its evidences. Its history dates back to the period when the organization of river festival was in its nascent stage. Origin of Kumbha Mela is also found in the one of the most popular medieval Puranas of Ancient India, Bhagavata Purana. The Samudra Manthan episode is well encrypted in the Bhagavata Purana, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and Vishnu Purana. As per the tales of Kumbha Mela, demigods lost their power due to the effect of a curse by Durvasa Muni. In order to regain their power they reached to Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. The demigods were directed by them to the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Vishnu. After offering a prayer to Lord Vishnu, they were directed to churn the ocean of Milk (Ksheera Sagara, the Ocean of Milk) to get amrita (the nectar of immortality). However, churning of Ksheera Sagara was not possible all alone by the demigods. For that they had to make an agreement with demons (Asuras). Demigods agreed to work together and distribute the wealth equally among each other. However, with the appearance of Kumbha (Urn) containing the amrita, a fight ensured among themselves.
