Huan Tsang, a Chinese Traveler who visited and traveled across India in 629-645 BC during the rule of King Harshavardhana, was first to etch out its evidences. Its history dates back to the period when the organization of river festival was in its nascent stage. Origin of Kumbha Mela is also found in the one of the most popular medieval Puranas of Ancient India, Bhagavata Purana. The Samudra Manthan episode is well encrypted in the Bhagavata Purana, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and Vishnu Purana. As per the tales of Kumbha Mela, demigods lost their power due to the effect of a curse by Durvasa Muni. In order to regain their power they reached to Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. The demigods were directed by them to the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Vishnu. After offering a prayer to Lord Vishnu, they were directed to churn the ocean of Milk (Ksheera Sagara, the Ocean of Milk) to get amrita (the nectar of immortality). However, churning of Ksheera Sagara was not possible all alone by the demigods. For that they had to make an agreement with demons (Asuras). Demigods agreed to work together and distribute the wealth equally among each other. However, with the appearance of Kumbha (Urn) containing the amrita, a fight ensured among themselves. SAMUDRA-MANTHAN Swami Nirvikarananda Introduction The ancient story of Samudra-manthan of the Hindu tradition has got a deep spiritual meaning for all humanity, especially in this modern age. During the past four hundred years, man has been doing, what the myth refers to us as, samudra-manthan, ‘churning the ocean’, through his scientific discoveries, technological inventions, industrial developments, and socio-economic programmes. Man ‘churns’ the ‘oceans’ of his life and experience, churns the whole nature, to obtain the ‘nectar’ of happy, joyous, and fulfilled life—a churning that has become intensified in the modern period. The Ancient Myth and the Modern Reality The vigorous churning of the ocean by the gods and the demons produced both poison and nectar, along with many other good and useful and attractive things in between, says the myth. The modern churning also, similarly, has produced beneficent and harmful things in abundance. When the beneficent things emerge, men rush towards them to possess them and to enjoy them. When harmful things emerge, all run away in fear and consternation. The gods and demons in the myth also behaved similarly. Among the beneficent and attractive things that came out, according to the myth, are Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and welfare, and Dhanvantari, the god of health and longevity, bringing with him the pot of nectar capable of conferring immortality on the churning participants. That led to competition, strife, and bitter war between the two groups, in the struggle to obtain the nectar for oneself and deprive the other group of it. The harmful thing that came out was the terrible poison called halāhala or kālakūta.

Nagapanchami 081/070816 nag PanChmi: snakes, dragons and Cultures Jawhar Sircar Ananda Bazar Patrika, 7th August 2016 (English Version) The month of Shravan brings joy to poets and also to farmers, but it also brings numerous snakes out of their flooded homes, triggering both fear and worship. This explains why many Indians celebrate Naga Panchami on Shravan Shukla Panchami, on the 7th of August this year. The snake is more than just an awe-inspiring creature: it actually marks different stages in the gradual evolution of the Indian mind, over centuries and millennia. We could begin from Janamejaya who personified the Western-Aryan hatred for the serpent, but we will reach a stage when the same animal found veneration, as Naga-raja or Manasa. The two, incidentally, are quite different, as one is a male snake and the other is surely a female deity. One can forgive this mistake, because it is not very safe to get too close to examine a snake's gender, even while worshipping. The serpent bears evidence of many conflicts, like the one between the wheat-eating Indo-Europeans of the West and the rice-loving civilisations of the East. After all, rice cultivation was hardly possible without water and this necessitated a better adjustment with eco-systems where snakes lived in plenty, but were not usually aggressive or venomous, unless attacked. In its legends are traces of the perennial struggle between ‘formal’ and ‘folk’ cultures. Manasa in Bengal was primarily folk, but later formalized as Padmavati, who was born from Shiva’s semen that fell on a lotus plant.

Indian mythology dates back to the times of Lord Rama, Lord Shiva and our firm beliefs in the divine. It also shares with us the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The reality of Ramayana and Mahabharata as true historical events or just an epic story is still arguable. The archaeological excavations give its presence in the structures of the Indus Valley Civilization and the Harappa Cities. Amish Tripathi, the budding Indian writer focuses on such issues of historical relevance in myths. In his works we find the science behind the Vedic customs. The paper attempts to sketch the scientific superiority of the Meluhans people in the novel The Shiva Trilogy. It depicts their firm beliefs and application of medicines and science for practicing a better and healthy life. Somras an eternal drink of bliss is an effort made by the Meluhan scientists to uplift the mankind, whereas the irony is that in the process of making the somras they are indirectly destroying the Mother Nature which in a way means demolishing the mankind. Mahashivratri falls on the 14th day of the dark half of 'Phalgun' (February- March). The name means "the night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place mainly at night. This is a festival observed in honour of Lord Shiva and it is believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati. Devotees bathe at sunrise, preferably in the Ganga, or any other holy water source (like Shiva Sagartank at Khajurao). They offer prayers to the sun (surya), Vishnu and Shiva. This is a purificatory rite, an important part of all Hindu festivals. Wearing a clean piece of clothing after the holy bath, worshippers carry pots of water to the temple and bathe the Shivling. The temple reverberates with the sound of bells and shouts of shankerji ki jai ‘Hail Shiva’. Devotees go around the Shivling, three or seven times, and then pour water over it. Lord Shiva is the deity of death and destruction, without which growth and rebirth could not take place. Lord Shiva's third eye in the centre of His forehead opens only in extreme anger, whilst His matted hair carries the Goddess Ganga down to earth. All Hindus observe Mahashivaratri. Devotees gather in great numbers and attend the temples of Shiva, perform pooja to the Shivaling, sing bajans, offer prayers and on this day one have to observe a fast.

Mangal Mandir Jagrati Class Lesson 2 September 14, 2014 The resident deities of Mangal Mandir are Lakshmi Narayan. They occupy the central location in the Mandir. One can see Narayan Bhagwan in His full glory and Lakshmi Maa in her benevolent blessing pose. Nara means humans and Ayana means shelter. Hence Narayana means the shelter of all human beings. Whosoever chants the “Om Namo Narayana” mantra reaches the Vaikuntha planet. Lord Narayan is the supreme almighty and everything emanates from Him. He Himself expands as the Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the maintainer) and Shiva (the destroyer). He is the supersoul and the supreme lord of all. Narayan Bhagwan is seen holding Sudarshan Chakra and gada in His right hands, shankha and lotus flower in his left hands. Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth and is the source of strength even to Lord Narayana. She is the consort of Vishnu and married Rama as Sita and Krishna as Radha. Lakshmi is the daughter of the sage Bhrigu and took refuge in the ocean of milk when the Gods were sent into exile. Lakshmi was reborn during the samudra manthan. Devas (Gods) and asuras (demons) were in a race to obtain amrit (the nectar of immortality.) The amrit was at the bottom of the ocean and had to be brought to the surface. They approached Lord Vishnu for His help. Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and supported the Mandara Mountain on his back. Devas and asuras then wound the serpent Vasuki about the mountain and used it to churn the ocean.
