ABSTRACT/RESUME In 1911 Fletcher and La Flesche published their comprehensive volume on the Omaha, written from an Omaha viewpoint as one of the last comprehen- sive ethnographies of a northern plains society. The author reviews their work, noting how easily it can be comprehended in terms of the Omaha of today, a society which has not disappeared, but which has undergone change and renewal. The Canadian Journal of Native Studies VII, 2 (1987):149-164. 150 Robin Ridington Introduction The Omaha are one of the five Dhegiha Siouan tribes. In early historic times they were farmers and bison hunters in lands bordering the middle and upper Missouri River. Today they occupy a reservation in eastern Nebraska. During their buffalo hunting days, the Omaha practiced an elaborate ceremonial order.1 Much of what outsiders know today about traditional Omaha ceremony was recorded by Alice Fletcher and Francis La Resche during the last decades of the nineteenth century. Francis La Flesche was himself a mem- ber of the tribe and experienced many of the ceremonies as a participant. They reported their findings in The Omaha Tribe, the 27th Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, published in 1911. Their work is an eth- nographic classic because it provides detailed description of a Native American ceremonial order. It is also a classic because it explains that order in relation to cosmic images that underlie Omaha thought and experience. Fletcher and La Resche describe an image of cosmic union that runs through Omaha thought and surfaces in myth, ceremony, and social or- ganization. Omaha clans are divided into moieties called Inshtacunda, "Sky People," and Hongashenu, "Earth People." "Myths," according to Fletcher and La Flesche, "relate that human beings were born of a union between the Sky People and the Earth People." This union, they say, "was conceived to be necessary to the existence of the tribe." Omaha renewal ceremonies channel the energy of creation into the life of the tribe. They are a kind of ritual theatre that make the tribe's cosmic images manifest for all to see and experience. This paper describes images of renewal that these ceremonies bring to the public view. It recontextualizes information given by Retcher and La Flesche in The Omaha Tribe and argues that their interpretive lan- guage resonates well with modern understandings of traditional cosmology. The Sacred Pole The Omaha came to their present location along the middle Missouri River from a place that was "near a large body of water, in a wooded country where there was game" (Fletcher and La Flesche, 1911:70). Throughout the historic period they moved extensively. Even after taking up residence in earth lodge villages copied from those of the other Missouri River tribes, the Omaha continued to move as a single tribal unit during the annual buffalo hunt. Their camp circle, the Huthuga, was divided into northern and southern halves. The Sky People camped to the north, the Earth People to the south. The Huthuga was open to the east like the tipi of a single family. "Through Omaha Images 151 it, the people went forth in guest of game, and through it they returned with their supply of food, as one enters the door of one's home" (Fletcherand La Flesche, 1911:137-138). Omaha images of renewal follow the multiple connections implicit in the metaphor of the Huthuga as a family dwelling of the tribe as a whole. During their existenceas buffalo hunters, the Omaha representedtheir tribal identity by a Sacred Pole that was carried from camp to camp by a priest or "Keeper," selected from a particular group within the Honga, or Leader clan which occupied a position to the south of the Huthuga. Fletcher and La Flesche wrote that the Omaha Sacred Pole and its ceremonial tradi- tions presented a central image from which to understand the overall cos- mology of the tribe. The Sacred Pole, like the Huthuga, represented an essence of Omaha identity. When the buffalo disappearedand the Omaha settled on their reserva- tion in eastern Nebraska they abandoned the ceremony of renewing the Pole. Its last Keeperwas an old man named Shudenachi,"Smoked Yellow," a reference to the appearance of the Honga's Sacred Tent. Fletcher and La Fleschebelieved that if the Pole and its story were buried with Smoked Yel- low rather than being transferred to the care and keeping of anthropology, "the full story of the tribe (would) be forever lost, for that story was as yet imperfectly known." The Pole and its sacred legend they said, could provide "a point of view whenceto study, as from the center, the ceremoniescon- nected with these articles and their relation to the autonomy of the tribe" (Fletcherand La Flesche, 191 1:222). In Septemberof 1888, Smoked Yellow agreed to tell the story of the Pole to Fletcher and La Flesche. The story Smoked Yellow told to Fletcherand La Flesche came to rest at the center of the 27th Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology. We would call the Pole's origin story a "myth." To the Omaha, it is tribal history. It tells of essential rather than contingent truth. Its events reflect universal patterns of relationship between the social and the natural order rather than the particularhappenings of a single time and place. In order to understand Indian history, the scholar must become familiar with the con- ventions of a symbolic language that was, and continuesto be, enacted in the tribe's ritual order. The following is a precis of the Sacred story as Fletcherand La Flesche recorded it: The son of an Omaha chief was hunting alone in the forest at a time when the elders were in council "to devise some means by which the bands of the tribe might be kept togetherand the tribe itself saved from extinction."On his way home he came to a great forest and in the night lost his way. He stopped to rest 152 Robin Ridington and to find the "motionlessstar" (the pole star) for his guide when he was suddenly attracted by a light. When he ap- proached the light he saw that it was "a tree that sent forth light. He went up to it and found that the whole tree, its trunk, branches, and leaves, were alight, yet remained unconsumed." The young man watched the luminous tree "until with the rising of the sun the tree with its foliage resumed its natural ap- pearance."He remained by it throughoutthe day. "As twilight came on it began to be luminousand continuedso until the sun rose again. When the young man returned home he told his father of the wonder. Togetherthey went to see the tree; they saw it all alight as it was before but the father observed some- thing that had escaped the notice of the young man; this was that four animal paths led to it. These paths were well beaten and as the two men examined the paths and the tree, it was clear to them that the animals came to the tree and had rubbed against it and polished its bark by doing so." The young man's fathertold the Chiefs of all the tribes, My son has seen a wonderful tree. The Thunder birds come and go upon this tree, making a trail of fire that leavesfour paths on the burnt grass that stretch toward the Four Winds. When the Thunderbirds alight upon the tree it burst into flame and the fire mountsto the top. The tree stands burning, but no one can see the fire except at night." The men of the tribe returnedto the tree. They stripped, painted themselves,put on their ornamentsand "ran as in a race to at- tack the tree as if it were a warriorenemy." The first to reach the tree struck it as he would an enemy.Then they cut the tree down "and four men, walking in a line, carried it on their shouldersto the village." They made a tent for the tree and set it up within the circle of lodges. "The chiefs worked upon the tree; they trimmed it and called it a human being. They made a basketworkreceptacle of twigs and feathers and tied it about the middle." Then they painted the Pole and set it up before the tent, leaning it on a crotched stick which they called imongthe (a staff)." Omaha Images 153 When the peoplewere gathered,the Chiefs stood up and said, "You now see before you a mystery. Wheneverwe meet with troubles we shall bring all our troubles to Him (The Pole). We shall make offeringsand requests. All our prayers must be ac- companied by gifts. This (the Pole) belongs to all the people, but it shall be in the keeping of one family (in the Honga gens) and the leadershipshall be with them. If anyone desiresto lead and to take responsibilityin governingthe people, he shall give him authority." When all was finished the people said, "Let us appoint a time when we shall again paint him and act before him the battles we have fought."The time was fixed.

It is good that you are here! ̵ UNL Omaha Language class See emblem By Robyn Tait Profile Link: Elise Harlan Introduction: To learn more about the real history and origins of the Omaha people, Tait examines historical sources that depict the complex relationship between Omaha Indians and whites. Although Omaha tribes thrived on trade relations with whites until the eighteenth century, by the nineteenth century, white dominance had created dire circumstances for tribes in which they often either perished or had to leave the city. The author also traces the incessant struggle between white settlers and native Omaha Indians that resulted in leasing and ultimately losing their own lands, a process that eventually led to the deterioration of traditional tribal cultures. To give a glimpse into the history of the UMOnHOn (Omaha) people, I will rely heavily on historian Judith Boughter’s Betraying the Omaha Nation, 1790–1916. This is the first and, I believe, only comprehensive history of the Omaha to date, written and researched primarily as Boughter’s master’s thesis for the History Department at University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) under Dr. Michael Tate (Boughter xi). You thank him for once again feeding your family for another lengthy winter. Plains Indians In the years before European settlers came to the United States, Native American tribes lived all across the land. Several tribes lived in what we call the Plains, or the middle portion of the country. I am going to focus on five Plains Indian tribes. These include: the Ponca tribe, the Omaha tribe, the Pawnee tribe, Sioux and the Otoe-Missouri tribe. Some of these Native- American tribes were nomadic hunters. That means that they traveled all year round in search of plants, animals, food, and fresh water. They also traveled to visit and trade with other tribes. When they traded, they traded for stuff they didn’t have. For example they got horses, shells, beads, and stone that was soft enough to carve, and rock that could be chipped into weapon heads, or points.

A member of the Omaha tribe, Eunice was a daughter of the last hereditary Omaha Chief. Eunice learned Omaha customs and language as a child. She attended the Genoa Indian School and graduated from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. After college, Eunice worked for an attorney in Walthill, Nebraska and as an enrollment officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs agencies in Macy and Winnebago, Nebraska. In 1912 Eunice married George Stabler. They had three children, Hollis, Robert, and Marcella, and traveled extensively while raising their family. Marcella Stabler died in a diabetic coma in 1942, and Robert Stabler was killed in action in Italy in 1944. Eunice was an author of both poetry and prose, and many of her works reflect her respect and concern for the Omaha people and other Native Americans. She was also active in politics, school, church, and community affairs. Eunice was a member of the Harold Big Heart Smalley American Legion Auxiliary, a Gold Star Mother, a National G.O.P. Committee Woman from Nebraska in 1928, a member of the Kansas Authors’ Club, and an Officer in the National Congress of American Indians. She lived in Wichita, Kansas from 1945 until her death. Black Bird (I75o?-I8oI) was an exceptionally dynamic chief who ex- ercised forceful leadership over the Omaha. He is reputed to have used arsenic to destroy his political enemies. He extorted tribute from the French fur traders, and under his leadership, the Omaha and Ponca blockaded the Missouri River in the mid-I79os. The conventional view that Black Bird was a despot and usurper is assessed, and it is speculated that his leadership may have represented "cycling"- the rebirth of a chiefdom-level society. In the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the Omaha Chief Black Bird 2-called "Oiseau Noir" by the French and "El Pajaro Negro" by the Spanish-gained a notorious reputation along the Missouri River because of his forceful leadership and his firm handling of fur traders. At the peak of his powers in the I79os, his influence extended beyond the Omaha to a wider regional sway over neighboring tribes.

    “Make Haste Slowly”: The Experiences of American Indian Women at Hampton Institute, 1878-1923 Jon L. Brudvig, Ph.D. University of Mary Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute was established in 1868 to serve the educational, economic, and spiritual needs of recently emancipated slaves living near Hampton Roads, Virginia. The institution’s founder and guiding force was General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, a former Union officer who commanded black troops during the Civil War.1 On April 13, 1878 General Armstrong welcomed a handful of American Indian students. These former prisoners of war came to Hampton from St. Augustine, Florida, with their warden, Richard Henry Pratt. Their presence at Hampton spawned the development of off-reservation boarding schools designed to transform American Indian pupils into replicas of their more assimilated neighbors. Humanitarians, educators, and government officials also hoped that the boarding schools would make tribal leaders more manageable and cooperative. The Plains wars, it appeared, had been replaced by a new type of battle, a struggle for the hearts, minds, and souls of the next generation of American Indian leaders.2 A short time after the Fort Marion party’s arrival, General Armstrong moved to expand the school’s Indian program by implementing immediate measures designed to attract female natives to Hampton.     "Object Lessons": Domesticity and Display in Native American Assimilation Jane E. Simonsen In 1885, Philip and Minnie Stabler, both "thoroughly honest, trustworthy, and industrious persons" erected a modest frame house near Bancroft, Nebraska, in an effort to attain the domestic security paradigmatic of the American home- steading ideal. Having assured his creditors of the solidity of his character and motives, Philip secured a loan and proceeded to gather estimates from various lumber dealers near Bancroft. He modified his house plan to fit his budget and engaged a carpenter to help him erect the house; the two men completed the house in less than two weeks at a cost of less than $400. Philip insured his home against the calamities of fire, lightning, and tornadoes which plagued Nebraska settlers, and went about working his farm in hopes of paying off the loan as quickly as possible.1 In the meantime, Minnie Stabler received gifts of a cook stove and rocking chair and began the duties of a housewife in earnest.2 She set aside the morning hours for her own education, and in the afternoon she worked at keeping house, cooking, washing, ironing, sewing, and cleaning. She owned a sewing machine and prided herself on her three-year-old son's articulateness. On Sunday evenings, Minnie and Philip hosted prayer meetings at their home.3 The Stabler home's simple architectural design—-just two rooms upstairs and two rooms down—belies the complexity of its cultural design.
